This session is a basic introduction to descriptive statistics for research administration professionals. No worries! Excel will be used throughout, nothing will be calculated by hand. Averages (means), medians, standard deviations, correlations and other basic statistical concepts will be explained using only research administration data as context. A sample research administration data set will be provided and Excel will be used to analyze the data. Some sample charts and best practices in creating these charts will also be shown. Again using Excel. This is the perfect session for anyone in research administration whose roles include analyzing data using descriptive statistics. Whether you are new to statistics or whether you can't remember a statistics class you might have taken at some point. Basic knowledge of Excel would be helpful for this session.

Development of high power, InP-based quantum cascade lasers on alternative epitaxial platforms
In this talk, challenges and solutions associated with the monolithic, epitaxial integration of mid- and longwave- infrared, InP-based quantum cascade lasers on GaAs and Si wafers will be discussed. Initial results, including room temperature, high power, and continuous wave operation, will be described.

This protocol is for a study that examines personalized adaptive learning (PAL) of undergraduate students with a focus on mathematics outcomes. This protocol addresses two meta-analytic studies: 1) Examination of PAL within the population of undergraduate students enrolled in mathematics courses broadly (across all mathematics courses with the type of course as a moderator); and 2) Specifically in college algebra, which is a STEM pipeline mathematics course. Undergraduate mathematics courses can be roadblocks to college degree attainment. PAL offers the opportunity to develop mathematical skills in a personalized way, while enabling instructors to identify students’ struggle areas and take remedial action.Partnering with academic librarians, databases likely to index relevant studies were identified, the search strategy was refined, and keywords and subject indexing terms were identified. Titles and abstracts were independently screened by two reviewers. Full-text review is in progress. Retained studies will have data extracted that will allow the results to be meta-analyzed.The standardized mean difference will be the main effect size computed. Multilevel meta-analysis will be used to address the hierarchical data structure. Robust variance estimation will be used to estimate standard errors and hypothesis tests, addressing dependencies of effect sizes within studies. Prediction intervals for effect sizes, for study-average effect sizes, and heterogeneity statistics will be reported. Subgroup analyses will evaluate the relationship between moderators and the magnitude of the effect size. Cochrane’s criteria for assessing the risk of bias in studies with a separate control group will be applied. Reporting bias will be assessed visually with funnel plots.more » « less

Materials informatics is widely acknowledged as a means of accelerating the rate of new materials discovery and material development. Such an approach will require widespread use of data driven methodologies and it is anticipated that downstream stakeholders, particularly industry, will be heavily involved in providing the required resources. This paper will propose workflows that illustrate how data driven methods could reasonably be applied to the processing-structure-properties relationships of locally sourced non-conventional materials. It is anticipated that simple material tests and imaging techniques will provide sufficient digital information for data driven approaches at relatively low cost. This utility will be illustrated using the example of bamboo and the levels of structure observable using widely available digital phone cameras. Finally, the possible role of the NOCMAT community in facilitating materials informatics will be considered.more » « less

Abstract This article will review quantum particle creation in expanding universes. The emphasis will be on the basic physical principles and on selected applications to cosmological models. The needed formalism of quantum field theory in curved spacetime will be summarized, and applied to the example of scalar particle creation in a spatially flat Universe. Estimates for the creation rate will be given and applied to inflationary cosmology models. Analog models which illustrate the same physical principles and may be experimentally realizable are also discussed.more » « less
