Title: Fifth grade students’ multiplicative reasoning when engaging with partial products
Despite the importance of multiplicative reasoning (MR) in mathematics, there is limited empirical study of the role of MR in multi-digit multiplication tasks. This study examined children’s multiplicative reasoning within their use of partial products. This mixed methods study of 16 fifth-grade students revealed that half of participants did not attend to partial products, and those that did tended to operate with the second or third multiplicative concept.  more » « less

  1. Embodied Interaction (EI) offers unique opportunities to uncover novel ways to achieve experiential learning whilst keeping students stimulated and engaged. Spatial abilities have been repeatedly demonstrated as a success predictor for educations and professions in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics. However, many researchers argue that training and assessment of this pertinent reasoning skill is vastly underrepresented in the school curriculum. This paper presents TetRotation, a PhD centred on how affordances coming from Multimodal Analytics can be coupled with EI to nurture Mental Rotation (MR) skills. The overarching objectives of the project are two fold. First, the TetRotation Interaction Design study will highlight best practices identified through the assessment of efficiency, level of engagement and learning gains achieved when using gesture based EI to solve MR tasks. Next, in the TetRotation Game study, these design practices will guide the implementation of an interactive serious game purposed to support the development of MR skills. This research relies on mixed method techniques, including data collections from users' actions, like motion sensing, EEG, gaze tracking, video-recordings, click streams, interviews and surveys.

  2. Scheduling in multi-channel wireless communication system presents formidable challenges in effectively allocating resources. To address these challenges, we investigate a multi-resource restless matching bandit (MR-RMB) model for heterogeneous resource systems with an objective of maximizing long-term discounted total rewards while respecting resource constraints. We have also generalized to applications beyond multi-channel wireless. We discuss the Max-Weight Index Matching algorithm, which optimizes resource allocation based on learned partial indexes. We have derived the policy gradient theorem for index learning. Our main contribution is the introduction of a new Deep Index Policy (DIP), an online learning algorithm tailored for MR-RMB. DIP learns the partial index by leveraging the policy gradient theorem for restless arms with convoluted and unknown transition kernels of heterogeneous resources. We demonstrate the utility of DIP by evaluating its performance for three different MR-RMB problems. Our simulation results show that DIP indeed learns the partial indexes efficiently.

    Event-driven architectures are broadly used for systems that must respond to events in the real world. Event-driven applications are prone to concurrency bugs that involve subtle errors in reasoning about the ordering of events. Unfortunately, there are several challenges in using existing model-checking techniques on these systems. Event-driven applications often loop indefinitely and thus pose a challenge for stateless model checking techniques. On the other hand, deploying purely stateful model checking can explore large sets of equivalent executions. In this work, we explore a new technique that combines dynamic partial order reduction with stateful model checking to support non-terminating applications. Our work is (1) the first dynamic partial order reduction algorithm for stateful model checking that is sound for non-terminating applications and (2) the first dynamic partial reduction algorithm for stateful model checking of event-driven applications. We experimented with the IoTCheck dataset—a study of interactions in smart home app pairs. This dataset consists of app pairs originated from 198 real-world smart home apps. Overall, our DPOR algorithm successfully reduced the search space for the app pairs, enabling 69 pairs of apps that did not finish without DPOR to finish and providing a 7× average speedup.

ABSTRACT The critical oxygen partial pressure (Pcrit), typically defined as the PO2 below which an animal's metabolic rate (MR) is unsustainable, is widely interpreted as a measure of hypoxia tolerance. Here, Pcrit is defined as the PO2 at which physiological oxygen supply (α0) reaches its maximum capacity (α; µmol O2 g−1 h−1 kPa−1). α is a species- and temperature-specific constant describing the oxygen dependency of the maximum metabolic rate (MMR=PO2×α) or, equivalently, the MR dependence of Pcrit (Pcrit=MR/α). We describe the α-method, in which the MR is monitored as oxygen declines and, for each measurement period, is divided by the corresponding PO2 to provide the concurrent oxygen supply (α0=MR/PO2). The highest α0 value (or, more conservatively, the mean of the three highest values) is designated as α. The same value of α is reached at Pcrit for any MR regardless of previous or subsequent metabolic activity. The MR need not be constant (regulated), standardized or exhibit a clear breakpoint at Pcrit for accurate determination of α. The α-method has several advantages over Pcrit determination and non-linear analyses, including: (1) less ambiguity and greater accuracy, (2) fewer constraints in respirometry methodology and analysis, and (3) greater predictive power and ecological and physiological insight. Across the species evaluated here, α values are correlated with MR, but not Pcrit. Rather than an index of hypoxia tolerance, Pcrit is a reflection of α, which evolves to support maximum energy demands and aerobic scope at the prevailing temperature and oxygen level.

  5. We formulate a conjecture on actions of the multiplicative group in motivichomotopy theory. In short, if the multiplicative group G_m acts on aquasi-projective scheme U such that U is attracted as t approaches 0 in G_m toa closed subset Y in U, then the inclusion from Y to U should be anA^1-homotopy equivalence. We prove several partial results. In particular, over the complex numbers,the inclusion is a homotopy equivalence on complex points. The proofs use ananalog of Morse theory for singular varieties. Application: the Hilbert schemeof points on affine n-space is homotopy equivalent to the subspace consistingof schemes supported at the origin.
