Title: OPPORTUNITIES TO NURTURE EQUITABLE TEACHING THROUGH SIMULATIONS OF ELICITING AND INTERPRETING STUDENT THINKING
We describe how a teaching simulation cycle focused on eliciting and interpreting student thinking in elementary mathematics can reveal important aspects of a teacher candidate’s (TC’s) knowledge and skill with eight performance areas relevant to more equitable mathematics teaching. Appraising a TC’s knowledge and skill with respect to these performance areas is intended to support formative feedback that is actionable in subsequent teaching.  more » « less

This chapter reports on work from a decade-long project to develop and study the use of teaching simulations focused on the teaching practices of eliciting and interpreting student thinking to support preservice teachers' (PSTs') learning. The chapter describes how teaching simulations focused on these practices allow teacher educators to support PSTs in orienting to student sense-making that is at the heart of equitable mathematics instruction. The teaching simulation approach is described. Examples illustrate how the approach is designed and facilitated in ways that make visible PSTs' engagement with three teaching performance areas (eliciting the student's process, using mathematical knowledge and skill, and conveying respect for the student as a mathematical thinker and learner) that are crucial for more equitable mathematics instruction. Connections between each of the performance areas and more equitable eliciting and interpreting of student thinking are described alongside the ways in which teacher educators can provide feedback that supports PSTs' development.

    It has been suggested that integrating reasoning and proof in mathematics teaching requires a special type of teacher knowledge - Mathematical Knowledge for Teaching Proof (MKT-P). Yet, several important questions about the nature of MKT-P remain open, specifically, whether MKT-P is a type of knowledge specific to teachers, and whether MKT-P can be improved through intervention. We explored these questions by comparing performance on an MKT-P questionnaire of in-service secondary mathematics teachers, undergraduate STEM majors, and pre-service secondary mathematics teachers. The latter group completed the questionnaire twice- before and after participating in a capstone course, Mathematical Reasoning and Proving for Secondary Teachers. Our data suggest that MKT-P is indeed a special kind of knowledge specific to teachers and it can be improved through interventions.

This study is one component of a larger study aimed at exploring the nature of MKT-P. The present study examines qualitative differences in feedback given by STEM majors, in-service and pre-service secondary mathematics teachers on hypothetical students’ arguments. The results explicate key distinctions in the feedback provided by these groups, indicating that this is a learnable skill. Feedback is cast as a component of MKT-P, making the results of this study significant empirical support for the construct of MKT-P as a type of knowledge that is unique to teachers.

  5. In 1908, Felix Klein suggested that to mend the discontinuity that prospective secondary teachers face, university instruction must account for teachers’ needs. More than a century later, problems of discontinuity remain. Our project addresses the dilemma of discontinuity in university mathematics courses through simulating core teaching practices in mathematically intensive ways. In other words, we interpret teachers’ needs to include integrating content and pedagogy. We argue that doing so has the potential to impact teachers’ competence. To make this argument, we report fndings from the Mathematics of Doing, Understanding, Learning, and Educating for Secondary Schools (MODULE(S2)) project. The results are based on data from 324 prospective secondary mathematics teachers (PSMTs) enrolled in courses using curricular materials developed by the project in four content areas (algebra, geometry, modeling, and statistics). We operationalized competence in terms of PSMTs’ content knowledge for teaching and their motivation for enacting core teaching practices. We examined pre- and post-term data addressing these constructs. We found mean increases in PSMTs’ outcomes in content knowledge for teaching and aspects of motivation.
