Title: Differential cross-sections for events with missing transverse momentum and jets measured with the ATLAS detector in 13 TeV proton-proton collisions
Abstract Measurements of inclusive, differential cross-sections for the production of events with missing transverse momentum in association with jets in proton-proton collisions at$$ \sqrt{s} $$ s = 13 TeV are presented. The measurements are made with the ATLAS detector using an integrated luminosity of 140 fb−1and include measurements of dijet distributions in a region in which vector-boson fusion processes are enhanced. They are unfolded to correct for detector resolution and efficiency within the fiducial acceptance, and are designed to allow robust comparisons with a wide range of theoretical predictions. A measurement of differential cross sections for theZ→ννprocess is made. The measurements are generally well-described by Standard Model predictions except for the dijet invariant mass distribution. Auxiliary measurements of the hadronic system recoiling against isolated leptons, and photons, are also made in the same phase space. Ratios between the measured distributions are then derived, to take advantage of cancellations in modelling effects and some of the major systematic uncertainties. These measurements are sensitive to new phenomena, and provide a mechanism to easily set constraints on phenomenological models. To illustrate the robustness of the approach, these ratios are compared with two common Dark Matter models, where the constraints derived from the measurement are comparable to those set by dedicated detector-level searches.  more » « less

  1. Abstract Measurements of fiducial and total inclusive cross sections for W and Z boson production are presented in proton-proton collisions at$$ \sqrt{s} $$ s = 5.02 and 13 TeV. Electron and muon decay modes (ℓ= e orμ) are studied in the data collected with the CMS detector in 2017, in dedicated runs with reduced instantaneous luminosity. The data sets correspond to integrated luminosities of 298 ± 6 pb−1at 5.02 TeV and 206 ± 5 pb−1at 13 TeV. Measured values of the products of the total inclusive cross sections and the branching fractions at 5.02 TeV areσ(pp→W + X)$$ \mathcal{B} $$ B (W→ ℓν) = 7300±10 (stat)±60 (syst)±140 (lumi) pb, andσ(pp→Z+X)$$ \mathcal{B} $$ B (Z→ ℓ+ℓ−) = 669±2 (stat)±6 (syst)±13 (lumi) pb for the dilepton invariant mass in the range of 60–120 GeV. The corresponding results at 13 TeV are 20480±10 (stat)±170 (syst)±470 (lumi) pb and 1952±4 (stat)±18 (syst)±45 (lumi) pb. The measured values agree with cross section calculations at next-to-next-to-leading-order in perturbative quantum chromodynamics. Fiducial and total inclusive cross sections, ratios of cross sections of W+and W−production as well as inclusive W and Z boson production, and ratios of these measurements at 5.02 and 13 TeV are reported.

  2. Abstract This paper presents measurements of top-antitop quark pair ($$ t\overline{t} $$ tt¯ ) production in association with additionalb-jets. The analysis utilises 140 fb−1of proton–proton collision data collected with the ATLAS detector at the Large Hadron Collider at a centre-of-mass energy of 13 TeV. Fiducial cross-sections are extracted in a final state featuring one electron and one muon, with at least three or fourb-jets. Results are presented at the particle level for both integrated cross-sections and normalised differential cross-sections, as functions of global event properties, jet kinematics, andb-jet pair properties. Observable quantities characterisingb-jets originating from the top quark decay and additionalb-jets are also measured at the particle level, after correcting for detector effects. The measured integrated fiducial cross-sections are consistent with$$ t\overline{t}b\overline{b} $$ tt¯bb¯ predictions from various next-to-leading-order matrix element calculations matched to a parton shower within the uncertainties of the predictions. State-of-the-art theoretical predictions are compared with the differential measurements; none of them simultaneously describes all observables. Differences between any two predictions are smaller than the measurement uncertainties for most observables.

  3. Abstract Measurements of the inclusive and normalised differential cross sections are presented for the production of single top quarks in association with a W boson in proton-proton collisions at a centre-of-mass energy of 13 TeV. The data used were recorded with the CMS detector at the LHC during 2016–2018, and correspond to an integrated luminosity of 138 fb−1. Events containing one electron and one muon in the final state are analysed. For the inclusive measurement, a multivariate discriminant, exploiting the kinematic properties of the events is used to separate the signal from the dominant$$ \textrm{t}\overline{\textrm{t}} $$ tt¯ background. A cross section of$$ 79.2\pm 0.9{\left(\textrm{stat}\right)}_{-8.0}^{+7.7}\left(\textrm{syst}\right)\pm 1.2\left(\textrm{lumi}\right) $$ 79.2±0.9 stat−8.0+7.7 syst±1.2lumi pb is obtained, consistent with the predictions of the standard model. For the differential measurements, a fiducial region is defined according to the detector acceptance, and the requirement of exactly one jet coming from the fragmentation of a bottom quark. The resulting distributions are unfolded to particle level and agree with the predictions at next-to-leading order in perturbative quantum chromodynamics.

  4. Abstract The effective lifetime of the$$ {\textrm{B}}_{\textrm{s}}^0 $$ Bs0 meson in the decay$$ {\textrm{B}}_{\textrm{s}}^0\to \textrm{J}/{\uppsi \textrm{K}}_{\textrm{S}}^0 $$ Bs0→J/ψKS0 is measured using data collected during 2016–2018 with the CMS detector in$$ \sqrt{s} $$ s = 13 TeV proton-proton collisions at the LHC, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 140 fb−1. The effective lifetime is determined by performing a two-dimensional unbinned maximum likelihood fit to the$$ {\textrm{B}}_{\textrm{s}}^0 $$ Bs0 meson invariant mass and proper decay time distributions. The resulting value of 1.59 ± 0.07(stat) ± 0.03(syst) ps is the most precise measurement to date and is in good agreement with the expected value.

  5. Abstract Measurements of the production cross sections of prompt D0, D+, D*+,$$ {\textrm{D}}_{\textrm{s}}^{+} $$ Ds+ ,$$ {\Lambda}_{\textrm{c}}^{+} $$ Λc+ , and$$ {\Xi}_{\textrm{c}}^{+} $$ Ξc+ charm hadrons at midrapidity in proton-proton collisions at$$ \sqrt{s} $$ s = 13 TeV with the ALICE detector are presented. The D-meson cross sections as a function of transverse momentum (pT) are provided with improved precision and granularity. The ratios ofpT-differential meson production cross sections based on this publication and on measurements at different rapidity and collision energy provide a constraint on gluon parton distribution functions at low values of Bjorken-x(10−5–10−4). The measurements of$$ {\Lambda}_{\textrm{c}}^{+} $$ Λc+ ($$ {\Xi}_{\textrm{c}}^{+} $$ Ξc+ ) baryon production extend the measuredpTintervals down topT= 0(3) GeV/c. These measurements are used to determine the charm-quark fragmentation fractions and the$$ \textrm{c}\overline{\textrm{c}} $$ cc¯ production cross section at midrapidity (|y|<0.5) based on the sum of the cross sections of the weakly-decaying ground-state charm hadrons D0, D+,$$ {\textrm{D}}_{\textrm{s}}^{+} $$ Ds+ ,$$ {\Lambda}_{\textrm{c}}^{+} $$ Λc+ ,$$ {\Xi}_{\textrm{c}}^0 $$ Ξc0 and, for the first time,$$ {\Xi}_{\textrm{c}}^{+} $$ Ξc+ , and of the strongly-decaying J/ψmesons. The first measurements of$$ {\Xi}_{\textrm{c}}^{+} $$ Ξc+ and$$ {\Sigma}_{\textrm{c}}^{0,++} $$ Σc0,++ fragmentation fractions at midrapidity are also reported. A significantly larger fraction of charm quarks hadronising to baryons is found compared to e+e−and ep collisions. The$$ \textrm{c}\overline{\textrm{c}} $$ cc¯ production cross section at midrapidity is found to be at the upper bound of state-of-the-art perturbative QCD calculations.
