Title: Constraints on simplified dark matter models involving an s-channel mediator with the ATLAS detector in pp collisions at $$\sqrt{s} = 13$$ TeV
Abstract This paper reports a summary of searches for a fermionic dark matter candidate in the context of theoretical models characterised by a mediator particle exchange in thes-channel. The data sample considered consists ofppcollisions delivered by the Large Hadron Collider during its Run 2 at a centre-of-mass energy of$$\sqrt{s} = 13\,\textrm{TeV}$$ s=13TeV and recorded by the ATLAS detector, corresponding to up to 140 fb$$^{-1}$$ -1 . The interpretations of the results are based on simplified models where the new mediator particles can be spin-0, with scalar or pseudo-scalar couplings to fermions, or spin-1, with vector or axial-vector couplings to fermions. Exclusion limits are obtained from various searches characterised by final states with resonant production of Standard Model particles, or production of Standard Model particles in association with large missing transverse momentum.  more » « less

  1. Abstract The dependence of$$\textrm{f}_{0}$$ f0 (980) production on the final-state charged-particle multiplicity is reported for proton–proton (pp) collisions at the centre-of-mass energy,$$\sqrt{s}=$$ s=  13 TeV. The production of$$\textrm{f}_{0}$$ f0 (980) is measured with the ALICE detector via the$$\textrm{f}_0 (980) \rightarrow \pi ^{+}\pi ^{-}$$ f0(980)π+π- decay channel in a midrapidity region of$$|y|<$$ |y|<  0.5. The evolution of the integrated yields and mean transverse momentum of f$$_{0}$$ 0 (980) as a function of charged-particle multiplicity measured in pp at$$\sqrt{s}=$$ s=  13 TeV follows the trends observed in pp at$$\sqrt{s}=$$ s=  5.02 TeV and in proton–lead (p–Pb) collisions at$$\sqrt{s_{\textrm{NN}}}=$$ sNN =  5.02 TeV. Particle yield ratios of$$\textrm{f}_{0}$$ f0 (980) to$$\pi ^{\pm }$$ π± and$$\textrm{K}^{*}$$ K (892)$$^{0}$$ 0 are found to decrease with increasing charged-particle multiplicity. These particle ratios are compared with calculations from the canonical statistical thermal model as a function of charged-particle multiplicity. The thermal model calculations provide a better description of the decreasing trend of particle ratios when no strange or antistrange quark composition for f$$_{0}$$ 0 (980) is assumed, which suggests that the data do not support significant hidden strangeness in the$$\textrm{f}_{0} (980)$$ f0(980)

  2. Abstract Leptoquarks ($$\textrm{LQ}$$ LQ s) are hypothetical particles that appear in various extensions of the Standard Model (SM), that can explain observed differences between SM theory predictions and experimental results. The production of these particles has been widely studied at various experiments, most recently at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC), and stringent bounds have been placed on their masses and couplings, assuming the simplest beyond-SM (BSM) hypotheses. However, the limits are significantly weaker for$$\textrm{LQ}$$ LQ models with family non-universal couplings containing enhanced couplings to third-generation fermions. We present a new study on the production of a$$\textrm{LQ}$$ LQ at the LHC, with preferential couplings to third-generation fermions, considering proton-proton collisions at$$\sqrt{s} = 13 \, \textrm{TeV}$$ s=13TeV and$$\sqrt{s} = 13.6 \, \textrm{TeV}$$ s=13.6TeV . Such a hypothesis is well motivated theoretically and it can explain the recent anomalies in the precision measurements of$$\textrm{B}$$ B -meson decay rates, specifically the$$R_{D^{(*)}}$$ RD () ratios. Under a simplified model where the$$\textrm{LQ}$$ LQ masses and couplings are free parameters, we focus on cases where the$$\textrm{LQ}$$ LQ decays to a$$\tau $$ τ lepton and a$$\textrm{b}$$ b quark, and study how the results are affected by different assumptions about chiral currents and interference effects with other BSM processes with the same final states, such as diagrams with a heavy vector boson,$$\textrm{Z}^{\prime }$$ Z . The analysis is performed using machine learning techniques, resulting in an increased discovery reach at the LHC, allowing us to probe new physics phase space which addresses the$$\textrm{B}$$ B -meson anomalies, for$$\textrm{LQ}$$ LQ masses up to$$5.00\, \textrm{TeV}$$ 5.00TeV , for the high luminosity LHC scenario.

  3. Abstract A search for leptoquark pair production decaying into$$te^- \bar{t}e^+$$ te- t¯ e+ or$$t\mu ^- \bar{t}\mu ^+$$ tμ- t¯ μ+ in final states with multiple leptons is presented. The search is based on a dataset ofppcollisions at$$\sqrt{s}=13~\text {TeV} $$ s=13TeV recorded with the ATLAS detector during Run 2 of the Large Hadron Collider, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 139 fb$$^{-1}$$ -1 . Four signal regions, with the requirement of at least three light leptons (electron or muon) and at least two jets out of which at least one jet is identified as coming from ab-hadron, are considered based on the number of leptons of a given flavour. The main background processes are estimated using dedicated control regions in a simultaneous fit with the signal regions to data. No excess above the Standard Model background prediction is observed and 95% confidence level limits on the production cross section times branching ratio are derived as a function of the leptoquark mass. Under the assumption of exclusive decays into$$te^{-}$$ te- ($$t\mu ^{-}$$ tμ- ), the corresponding lower limit on the scalar mixed-generation leptoquark mass$$m_{\textrm{LQ}_{\textrm{mix}}^{\textrm{d}}}$$ m LQmixd is at 1.58 (1.59) TeV and on the vector leptoquark mass$$m_{{\tilde{U}}_1}$$ m U~1 at 1.67 (1.67) TeV in the minimal coupling scenario and at 1.95 (1.95) TeV in the Yang–Mills scenario.

  4. Abstract A search for pair-produced vector-like quarks using events with exactly one lepton (eor$$\mu $$ μ ), at least four jets including at least oneb-tagged jet, and large missing transverse momentum is presented. Data from proton–proton collisions at a centre-of-mass energy of$$\sqrt{s}=$$ s= 13 $$\text {TeV}$$ TeV , recorded by the ATLAS detector at the LHC from 2015 to 2018 and corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 139 fb$$^{-1}$$ -1 , are analysed. Vector-like partnersTandBof the top and bottom quarks are considered, as is a vector-likeXwith charge$$+5/3$$ +5/3 , assuming their decay into aW,Z, or Higgs boson and a third-generation quark. No significant deviations from the Standard Model expectation are observed. Upper limits on the production cross-section ofTandBquark pairs as a function of their mass are derived for various decay branching ratio scenarios. The strongest lower limits on the masses are 1.59 $$\text {TeV}$$ TeV assuming mass-degenerate vector-like quarks and branching ratios corresponding to the weak-isospin doublet model, and 1.47 $$\text {TeV}$$ TeV (1.46 $$\text {TeV}$$ TeV ) for exclusive$$T \rightarrow Zt$$ TZt ($$B/X \rightarrow Wt$$ B/XWt ) decays. In addition, lower limits on theTandBquark masses are derived for all possible branching ratios.

  5. Abstract A search is reported for charge-parity$$CP$$ CP violation in$${{{\textrm{D}}}^{{0}}} \rightarrow {{\textrm{K}} _{\text {S}}^{{0}}} {{\textrm{K}} _{\text {S}}^{{0}}} $$ D0 KS0 KS0 decays, using data collected in proton–proton collisions at$$\sqrt{s} = 13\,\text {Te}\hspace{-.08em}\text {V} $$ s=13TeV recorded by the CMS experiment in 2018. The analysis uses a dedicated data set that corresponds to an integrated luminosity of 41.6$$\,\text {fb}^{-1}$$ fb-1 , which consists of about 10 billion events containing a pair of b hadrons, nearly all of which decay to charm hadrons. The flavor of the neutral D meson is determined by the pion charge in the reconstructed decays$${{{\textrm{D}}}^{{*+}}} \rightarrow {{{\textrm{D}}}^{{0}}} {{{\mathrm{\uppi }}}^{{+}}} $$ D + D0π+ and$${{{\textrm{D}}}^{{*-}}} \rightarrow {\overline{{\textrm{D}}}^{{0}}} {{{\mathrm{\uppi }}}^{{-}}} $$ D - D¯0π- . The$$CP$$ CP asymmetry in$${{{\textrm{D}}}^{{0}}} \rightarrow {{\textrm{K}} _{\text {S}}^{{0}}} {{\textrm{K}} _{\text {S}}^{{0}}} $$ D0 KS0 KS0 is measured to be$$A_{CP} ({{\textrm{K}} _{\text {S}}^{{0}}} {{\textrm{K}} _{\text {S}}^{{0}}} ) = (6.2 \pm 3.0 \pm 0.2 \pm 0.8)\%$$ ACP ( KS0 KS0 ) =(6.2±3.0±0.2±0.8)% , where the three uncertainties represent the statistical uncertainty, the systematic uncertainty, and the uncertainty in the measurement of the$$CP$$ CP asymmetry in the$${{{\textrm{D}}}^{{0}}} \rightarrow {{\textrm{K}} _{\text {S}}^{{0}}} {{{\mathrm{\uppi }}}^{{+}}} {{{\mathrm{\uppi }}}^{{-}}} $$ D0 KS0 π+π- decay.
