Title: Search for supersymmetry in final states with missing transverse momentum and charm-tagged jets using 139 fb−1 of proton-proton collisions at $$ \sqrt{s} $$ = 13 TeV with the ATLAS detector
Abstract The paper presents a search for supersymmetric particles produced in proton-proton collisions at$$ \sqrt{s} $$ s = 13 TeV and decaying into final states with missing transverse momentum and jets originating from charm quarks. The data were taken with the ATLAS detector at the Large Hadron Collider at CERN from 2015 to 2018 and correspond to an integrated luminosity of 139 fb−1. No significant excess of events over the expected Standard Model background expectation is observed in optimized signal regions, and limits are set on the production cross-sections of the supersymmetric particles. Pair production of charm squarks or top squarks, each decaying into a charm quark and the lightest supersymmetric particle$$ {\overset{\sim }{\chi}}_1^0 $$ χ~10 , is excluded at 95% confidence level for squarks with masses up to 900 GeV for scenarios where the mass of$$ {\overset{\sim }{\chi}}_1^0 $$ χ~10 is below 50 GeV. Additionally, the production of leptoquarks with masses up to 900 GeV is excluded for the scenario where up-type leptoquarks decay into a charm quark and a neutrino. Model-independent limits on cross-sections and event yields for processes beyond the Standard Model are also reported.  more » « less

  1. Abstract This paper presents a search for top-squark pair production in final states with a top quark, a charm quark and missing transverse momentum. The data were collected with the ATLAS detector during LHC Run 2 and correspond to an integrated luminosity of 139 fb−1of proton-proton collisions at a centre-of-mass energy of$$ \sqrt{s} $$ s = 13 TeV. The analysis is motivated by an extended Minimal Supersymmetric Standard Model featuring a non-minimal flavour violation in the second- and third-generation squark sector. The top squark in this model has two possible decay modes, either$$ {\tilde{t}}_1\to c{\overset{\sim }{\chi}}_1^0 $$ t~1 →c χ~10 or$$ {\tilde{t}}_1\to t{\overset{\sim }{\chi}}_1^0 $$ t~1 →t χ~10 , where the$$ {\overset{\sim }{\chi}}_1^0 $$ χ~10 is undetected. The analysis is optimised assuming that both of the decay modes are equally probable, leading to the most likely final state of$$ tc+{E}_T^{\textrm{miss}} $$ tc+ETmiss . Good agreement is found between the Standard Model expectation and the data in the search regions. Exclusion limits at 95% CL are obtained in the$$ m\left({\tilde{t}}_1\right) $$ m t~1 vs.$$ m\left({\overset{\sim }{\chi}}_1^0\right) $$ m χ~10 plane and, in addition, limits on the branching ratio of the$$ {\tilde{t}}_1\to t{\overset{\sim }{\chi}}_1^0 $$ t~1 →t χ~10 decay as a function ofm($$ {\tilde{t}}_1 $$ t~1 ) are also produced. Top-squark masses of up to 800 GeV are excluded for scenarios with light neutralinos, and top-squark masses up to 600 GeV are excluded in scenarios where the neutralino and the top squark are almost mass degenerate.

  2. Abstract A search for supersymmetry involving the pair production of gluinos decaying via off-shell third-generation squarks into the lightest neutralino$$(\tilde{\chi }^0_1)$$ ( χ~10 ) is reported. It exploits LHC proton–proton collision data at a centre-of-mass energy$$\sqrt{s} = 13$$ s=13 TeV with an integrated luminosity of 139 fb$$^{-1}$$ -1 collected with the ATLAS detector from 2015 to 2018. The search uses events containing large missing transverse momentum, up to one electron or muon, and several energetic jets, at least three of which must be identified as containingb-hadrons. Both a simple kinematic event selection and an event selection based upon a deep neural-network are used. No significant excess above the predicted background is found. In simplified models involving the pair production of gluinos that decay via off-shell top (bottom) squarks, gluino masses less than 2.44 TeV (2.35 TeV) are excluded at 95% CL for a massless$$\tilde{\chi }^0_1.$$ χ~10 . Limits are also set on the gluino mass in models with variable branching ratios for gluino decays to$$b\bar{b}\tilde{\chi }^0_1,$$ b b¯ χ~10 , $$t\bar{t}\tilde{\chi }^0_1$$ t t¯ χ~10 and$$t\bar{b}\tilde{\chi }^-_1/\bar{t}b\tilde{\chi }^+_1.$$ t b¯ χ~1- / t¯ b χ~1+ .

  3. Abstract A search for long-lived particles decaying into hadrons is presented. The analysis uses 139 fb−1ofppcollision data collected at$$ \sqrt{s} $$ s = 13 TeV by the ATLAS detector at the LHC using events that contain multiple energetic jets and a displaced vertex. The search employs dedicated reconstruction techniques that significantly increase the sensitivity to long-lived particles decaying in the ATLAS inner detector. Background estimates for Standard Model processes and instrumental effects are extracted from data. The observed event yields are compatible with those expected from background processes. The results are used to set limits at 95% confidence level on model-independent cross sections for processes beyond the Standard Model, and on scenarios with pair-production of supersymmetric particles with long-lived electroweakinos that decay via a smallR-parity-violating coupling. The pair-production of electroweakinos with masses below 1.5 TeV is excluded for mean proper lifetimes in the range from 0.03 ns to 1 ns. When produced in the decay of$$ m\left(\overset{\sim }{g}\right) $$ m g~ = 2.4 TeV gluinos, electroweakinos with$$ m\left({\overset{\sim }{\chi}}_1^0\right) $$ m χ~10 = 1.5 TeV are excluded with lifetimes in the range of 0.02 ns to 4 ns.

  4. Abstract Measurements of the production cross sections of prompt D0, D+, D*+,$$ {\textrm{D}}_{\textrm{s}}^{+} $$ Ds+ ,$$ {\Lambda}_{\textrm{c}}^{+} $$ Λc+ , and$$ {\Xi}_{\textrm{c}}^{+} $$ Ξc+ charm hadrons at midrapidity in proton-proton collisions at$$ \sqrt{s} $$ s = 13 TeV with the ALICE detector are presented. The D-meson cross sections as a function of transverse momentum (pT) are provided with improved precision and granularity. The ratios ofpT-differential meson production cross sections based on this publication and on measurements at different rapidity and collision energy provide a constraint on gluon parton distribution functions at low values of Bjorken-x(10−5–10−4). The measurements of$$ {\Lambda}_{\textrm{c}}^{+} $$ Λc+ ($$ {\Xi}_{\textrm{c}}^{+} $$ Ξc+ ) baryon production extend the measuredpTintervals down topT= 0(3) GeV/c. These measurements are used to determine the charm-quark fragmentation fractions and the$$ \textrm{c}\overline{\textrm{c}} $$ cc¯ production cross section at midrapidity (|y|<0.5) based on the sum of the cross sections of the weakly-decaying ground-state charm hadrons D0, D+,$$ {\textrm{D}}_{\textrm{s}}^{+} $$ Ds+ ,$$ {\Lambda}_{\textrm{c}}^{+} $$ Λc+ ,$$ {\Xi}_{\textrm{c}}^0 $$ Ξc0 and, for the first time,$$ {\Xi}_{\textrm{c}}^{+} $$ Ξc+ , and of the strongly-decaying J/ψmesons. The first measurements of$$ {\Xi}_{\textrm{c}}^{+} $$ Ξc+ and$$ {\Sigma}_{\textrm{c}}^{0,++} $$ Σc0,++ fragmentation fractions at midrapidity are also reported. A significantly larger fraction of charm quarks hadronising to baryons is found compared to e+e−and ep collisions. The$$ \textrm{c}\overline{\textrm{c}} $$ cc¯ production cross section at midrapidity is found to be at the upper bound of state-of-the-art perturbative QCD calculations.

  5. Abstract Gauge-mediated supersymmetry-breaking models provide a strong motivation to search for a supersymmetric partner of the tau lepton (stau) with a macroscopic lifetime. Long-lived stau decays produce tau leptons that are displaced from the primary proton-proton interaction vertex, leading to an unconventional signature. This paper presents a search for the direct production of long-lived staus decaying within the CMS tracker volume in proton-proton collisions at$$ \sqrt{s}=13 $$ s=13 TeV, performed for the first time with an identification algorithm based on a graph neural network dedicated to displaced tau leptons. The data sample, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 138 fb−1, was recorded with the CMS experiment at the CERN LHC between 2016 and 2018. This search excludes, at 95% confidence level, stau masses,$$ {m}_{\overset{\sim }{\uptau}} $$ mτ~ , in the 126–260 (90–425) GeV range for a proper decay length of 50 mm in the maximally mixed (mass-degenerate) scenario, while for$$ {m}_{\overset{\sim }{\uptau}}=200 $$ mτ~ =200 GeV, stau proper decay lengths are excluded in the range 21–94 (6–333) mm. These results improve the exclusion limits compared to previous searches, and extend the parameter space explored in the context of supersymmetry.
