Abstract This daily diary study investigated the interplay of perceived friend and parent support in adolescents’ everyday lives. Specifically, we tested the interactive effects of friend and parent support on adolescent well‐being at both the intra‐ and inter‐individual level. A diverse sample of 119 adolescents (Mage = 15.36) completed diary reports for 2 weeks. Multivariate multilevel models demonstrated that on days adolescents felt more supported by their friends or parents, they experienced increases in their happiness and social connectedness. Additionally, parent support emerged as a protective factor for youth lacking friend support, although patterns differed at the intra‐ vs. inter‐individual level. The findings underscore the dynamic nature of social support in adolescents’ daily lives and highlight the interactive roles of friends and parents in promoting youth well‐being.

Comparing Justice-Involved and Community Adolescents’ Emotional Well-Being and Feelings of Social Connection During COVID-19: A Daily Diary Study of Adolescents’ Social Contact
This study utilizes 6 weeks of electronic daily diary self-assessments across more than 1 year of the COVID-19 pandemic to examine associations between adolescents’ phone and video social contact with friends, family, and others over time. The sample includes justice-involved juveniles adjudicated to probation or incarceration and a comparison community sample of never-arrested adolescents. Findings reveal that community youth did not demonstrate positive emotional gains from social contact via phone or video during the pandemic and at times experienced more negative emotion on days with virtual social contact; however, such contact was especially beneficial for justice-involved youth, who had better self-conceptions and stronger feelings of social connection (although more loneliness as well) on days when they engaged in phone or video contact with friends or family. Thus, social contact via phone or video may serve to close the gap in emotional well-being between justice-involved and community adolescents.

In response to COVID-19, the CDC issued hygiene, protective equipment, and physical distancing guidelines to reduce virus transmission. Adherence was crucial for public health, particularly in the earliest stage of COVID-19, before effective treatments emerged. Still, there was wide variation in willingness and/or ability to follow the recommendations. One group that might be expected to flout rules and take risks under normal circumstances is adolescents. This developmental stage predisposes one to push boundaries and seek the company of peers. Adolescents with a history of lawbreaking might be even more inclined to disregard public health guidelines due to experiential and dispositional factors. We employed a longitudinal study launched prior to the pandemic to identify which pre-pandemic factors predict adolescents’ adherence to—or disregard for—public health guidelines during a crisis. The sample (N = 75, 30% justice-involved) came from predominantly minoritized communities in a southwestern U.S. city. Data were collected in three waves over one year. Analyses tested whether adherence varied by time period, local infection trajectories, justice involvement, pre-pandemic mental health, risk-taking, and rule orientation. Results revealed that adherence declined over time and was generally lower among justice-involved adolescents. In addition, justice-involved adolescents with higher depressive symptoms displayed lower adherence, whereas those reporting higher anxiety symptoms displayed higher adherence. Understanding these factors is crucial for developing strategies to promote adherence to public health guidelines among adolescents during public health emergencies.more » « less

Abstract Close peer relationships are critical to children's and adolescents’ healthy development and well‐being, yet youth sometimes struggle to make friends. The present work tested whether an online version of the Fast Friends procedure could engender closeness among 9‐ to 13‐year‐old youth. Participant dyads (N = 131), matched in age and gender, were randomly assigned to answer personal questions that encourage self‐disclosure and play a collaborative game (Fast Friends condition) or to engage in similar activities without self‐disclosure or collaboration (control condition). Fast Friends dyads reported feeling closer and expressed more interest in future contact than control dyads. The discussion addresses potential future uses and implications of an online Fast Friends procedure.more » « less

Sexual exploration is a natural part of adolescent development; yet, unmediated internet access has enabled teens to engage in a wider variety of potentially riskier sexual interactions than previous generations, from normatively appropriate sexual interactions to sexually abusive situations. Teens have turned to online peer support platforms to disclose and seek support about these experiences. Therefore, we analyzed posts (N=45,955) made by adolescents (ages 13--17) on an online peer support platform to deeply examine their online sexual risk experiences. By applying a mixed methods approach, we 1) accurately (average of AUC = 0.90) identified posts that contained teen disclosures about online sexual risk experiences and classified the posts based on level of consent (i.e., consensual, non-consensual, sexual abuse) and relationship type (i.e., stranger, dating/friend, family) between the teen and the person in which they shared the sexual experience, 2) detected statistically significant differences in the proportions of posts based on these dimensions, and 3) further unpacked the nuance in how these online sexual risk experiences were typically characterized in the posts. Teens were significantly more likely to engage in consensual sexting with friends/dating partners; unwanted solicitations were more likely from strangers and sexual abuse was more likely when a family member was involved. We contribute to the HCI and CSCW literature around youth online sexual risk experiences by moving beyond the false dichotomy of "safe" versus "risky". Our work provides a deeper understanding of technology-mediated adolescent sexual behaviors from the perspectives of sexual well-being, risk detection, and the prevention of online sexual violence toward youth.more » « less

Online sexual risks pose a serious and frequent threat to adolescents’ online safety. While significant work is done within the HCI community to understand teens’ sexual experiences through public posts, we extend their research by qualitatively analyzing 156 private Instagram conversations flagged by 58 adolescents to understand the characteristics of sexual risks faced with strangers, acquaintances, and friends. We found that youth are often victimized by strangers through sexual solicitation/harassment as well as sexual spamming via text and visual media, which is often ignored by them. In contrast, adolescents’ played mixed roles with acquaintances, as they were often victims of sexual harassment, but sometimes engaged in sexting, or interacted by rejecting sexual requests from acquaintances. Lastly, adolescents were never recipients of sexual risks with their friends, as they mostly mutually participated in sexting or sexual spamming.
