  1. The fusion of hydrogenases and photosynthetic reaction centers (RCs) has proven to be a promising strategy for the production of sustainable biofuels. Type I (iron-sulfur-containing) RCs, acting as photosensitizers, are capable of promoting electrons to a redox state that can be exploited by hydrogenases for the reduction of protons to dihydrogen (H2). While both [FeFe] and [NiFe] hydrogenases have been used successfully, they tend to be limited due to either O2sensitivity, binding specificity, or H2production rates. In this study, we fuse a peripheral (stromal) subunit of Photosystem I (PS I), PsaE, to an O2-tolerant [FeFe] hydrogenase fromClostridium beijerinckiiusing a flexible [GGS]4linker group (CbHydA1-PsaE). We demonstrate that theCbHydA1 chimera can be synthetically activated in vitro to show bidirectional activity and that it can be quantitatively bound to a PS I variant lacking the PsaE subunit. When illuminated in an anaerobic environment, the nanoconstruct generates H2at a rate of 84.9 ± 3.1 µmol H2mgchl–1h–1. Further, when prepared and illuminated in the presence of O2, the nanoconstruct retains the ability to generate H2, though at a diminished rate of 2.2 ± 0.5 µmol H2mgchl–1h–1. This demonstrates not only that PsaE is a promising scaffold for PS I-based nanoconstructs, but the use of an O2-tolerant [FeFe] hydrogenase opens the possibility for an in vivo H2generating system that can function in the presence of O2

  2. The crystal structure of the title compound, hexaaquanickel(II) dichloride–1,4,7,10,13,16-hexaoxacyclooctadecane–water (1/2/2), [Ni(H2O)6]Cl2·2C12H24O6·2H2O, is reported. The asymmetric unit contains half of the Ni(OH2)6moiety with a formula of C12H32ClNi0.50O10at 105 K and triclinic (P1) symmetry. The [Ni(OH2)6]2+cation has close to ideal octahedral geometry with O—Ni—O bond angles that are within 3° of idealized values. The supramolecular structure includes hydrogen bonding between the water ligands, 18-crown-6 molecules, Clanions, and co-crystallized water solvent. Two crown ether molecules flank the [Ni(OH2)6]2+molecule at the axial positions in a sandwich-like structure. The relatively symmetric hydrogen-bonding network is enabled by small Clcounter-ions and likely influences the more idealized octahedral geometry of [Ni(OH2)6]2+

  3. Abstract A density functional theoretical (DFT) study is presented, implicating a1O2oxidation process to reach a dihydrobenzofuran from the reaction of the natural homoallylic alcohol, glycocitrine. Our results predict an interconversion between glycocitrine and aniso‐hydroperoxide intermediate [R(H)O+–O] that provides a key path in the chemistry which then follows. Formations of allylic hydroperoxides are unlikely from a1O2‘ene’ reaction. Instead, the dihydrobenzofuran arises by1O2oxidation facilitated by a 16° curvature of the glycocitrine ring imposed by a pyramidalN‐methyl group. This curvature facilitates the formation of theiso‐hydroperoxide, which is analogous to theisospecies CH2I+–Iand CHI2+–Iformed by UV photolysis of CH2I2and CHI3. Theiso‐hydroperoxide is also structurally reminiscent of carbonyl oxides (R2C=O+–O) formed in the reaction of carbenes and oxygen. Our DFT results point to intermolecular process, in which theiso‐hydroperoxide's fate relates to O‐transfer and H2O dehydration reactions for new insight into the biosynthesis of dihydrobenzofuran natural products.

  4. Abstract The overarching goal of this study is to effect the elimination of platinum from adducts withcis–C≡C−Pt−C≡C‐ linkages, thereby generating novel conjugated polyynes. Thus, the bis(hexatriynyl) complextrans‐(p‐tol3P)2Pt((C≡C)3H)2is treated with 1,3‐diphosphines R2C(CH2PPh2)2to generate (R2C(CH2PPh2)2)2Pt((C≡C)3H)2(14; R=c,n‐Bu;e,p‐tolCH2). These condense with the diiodide complexes R2C(CH2PPh2)2PtI2(9 a,c) in the presence of CuI (cat.) and excess HNEt2to give the title macrocycles [(R2C(CH2PPh2)2)Pt(C≡C)3]4(16 c,e) as adducts of the byproduct [H2NEt2]+I(30–66 %). DOSY NMR experiments establish that this association is maintained in solution, but NaOAc removes the ammonium salt. The bis(triethylsilylpolyynyl) complexes (n‐Bu2C(CH2PPh2)2)Pt((C≡C)nSiEt3)2(n=2, 3) are synthesized analogously to14 c. They react with I2at rt to give mainly the diiodide complex9 cand the coupling product Et3Si(C≡CC≡C)nSiEt3. The possibility of competing reactions giving IC≡C species is investigated. Analogous reactions of the Pt4C24macrocycle16 calso give9 c, but no sp13C NMR signals or mass spectrometric Cxz+ions (x=24–100) could be detected. It is proposed that some cyclo[24]carbon is generated, but then rapidly converts to other forms of elemental carbon. No cyclotetracosane (C24H48) is detected when this sequence is carried out in the presence of PtO2and H2

  5. Abstract Organofunctionalized tetranuclear clusters [(MIICl)2(VIVO)2{((HOCH2CH2)(H)N(CH2CH2O))(HN(CH2CH2O)2)}2] (1, M=Co,2: M=Zn) containing an unprecedented oxometallacyclic {M2V2Cl2N4O8} (M=Co, Zn) framework have been prepared by solvothermal reactions. The new oxo‐alkoxide compounds were fully characterized by spectroscopic methods, magnetic susceptibility measurement, DFT and ab initio computational methods, and complete single‐crystal X‐ray diffraction structure analysis. The isostructural clusters are formed of edge‐sharing octahedral {VO5N} and trigonal bipyramidal {MO3NCl} units. Diethanolamine ligates the bimetallic lacunary double cubane core of1and2in an unusual two‐mode fashion, unobserved previously. In the crystalline state, the clusters of1and2are joined by hydrogen bonds to form a three‐dimensional network structure. Magnetic susceptibility data indicate weakly antiferromagnetic interactions between the vanadium centers [Jiso(VIV−VIV)=−5.4(1); −3.9(2) cm−1], and inequivalent antiferromagnetic interactions between the cobalt and vanadium centers [Jiso(VIV−CoII)=−12.6 and −7.5 cm−1] contained in1.
