Abstract The elliptic flow$$(v_2)$$ of$${\textrm{D}}^{0}$$ mesons from beauty-hadron decays (non-prompt$${\textrm{D}}^{0})$$ was measured in midcentral (30–50%) Pb–Pb collisions at a centre-of-mass energy per nucleon pair$$\sqrt{s_{\textrm{NN}}} = 5.02$$ TeV with the ALICE detector at the LHC. The$${\textrm{D}}^{0}$$ mesons were reconstructed at midrapidity$$(|y|<0.8)$$ from their hadronic decay$$\mathrm {D^0 \rightarrow K^-\uppi ^+}$$ , in the transverse momentum interval$$2< p_{\textrm{T}} < 12$$ GeV/c. The result indicates a positive$$v_2$$ for non-prompt$${{\textrm{D}}^{0}}$$ mesons with a significance of 2.7$$\sigma $$ . The non-prompt$${{\textrm{D}}^{0}}$$ -meson$$v_2$$ is lower than that of prompt non-strange D mesons with 3.2$$\sigma $$ significance in$$2< p_\textrm{T} < 8~\textrm{GeV}/c$$ , and compatible with the$$v_2$$ of beauty-decay electrons. Theoretical calculations of beauty-quark transport in a hydrodynamically expanding medium describe the measurement within uncertainties.

Quantum Symmetries of Noncommutative Tori
Abstract We consider the problem of building non-invertible quantum symmetries (as characterized by actions of unitary fusion categories) on noncommutative tori. We introduce a general method to construct actions of fusion categories on inductive limit C*-algberas using finite dimenionsal data, and then apply it to obtain AT-actions of arbitrary Haagerup-Izumi categories on noncommutative 2-tori, of the even part of the$$E_{8}$$ subfactor on a noncommutative 3-torus, and of$$\text {PSU}(2)_{15}$$ on a noncommutative 4-torus.

Abstract A model based on a$$U(1)_{T^3_R}$$ extension of the Standard Model can address the mass hierarchy between generations of fermions, explain thermal dark matter abundance, and the muon$$g - 2$$ ,$$R_{(D)}$$ , and$$R_{(D^*)}$$ anomalies. The model contains a light scalar boson$$\phi '$$ and a heavy vector-like quark$$\chi _\textrm{u}$$ that can be probed at CERN’s large hadron collider (LHC). We perform a phenomenology study on the production of$$\phi '$$ and$${\chi }_u$$ particles from proton–proton$$(\textrm{pp})$$ collisions at the LHC at$$\sqrt{s}=13.6$$ TeV, primarily through$$g{-g}$$ and$$t{-\chi _\textrm{u}}$$ fusion. We work under a simplified model approach and directly take the$$\chi _\textrm{u}$$ and$$\phi '$$ masses as free parameters. We perform a phenomenological analysis considering$$\chi _\textrm{u}$$ final states to b-quarks, muons, and neutrinos, and$$\phi '$$ decays to$$\mu ^+\mu ^-$$ . A machine learning algorithm is used to maximize the signal sensitivity, considering an integrated luminosity of 3000$$\text {fb}^{-1}$$ . The proposed methodology can be a key mode for discovery over a large mass range, including low masses, traditionally considered difficult due to experimental constraints.more » « less

Abstract This paper presents the measurement of the isolated prompt photon inclusive production cross section in pp and p–Pb collisions by the ALICE Collaboration at the LHC. The measurement is performed in p–Pb collisions at centre-of-mass energies per nucleon pair of$$\sqrt{s_{\text {NN}}}={5.02}\,\textrm{TeV}$$ and 8.16 TeV, as well as in pp collisions at$$\sqrt{s}={5.02}\,\textrm{TeV}$$ and 8 TeV. The cross section is obtained at midrapidity$$(|y|<0.7)$$ using a charged-track based isolation momentum$$p_\textrm{T}^{\text {iso,~ch}}<{1.5}\,\textrm{GeV}/c$$ in a cone with radius$$R=0.4$$ . The data for both collision systems are well reproduced by perturbative QCD (pQCD) calculations at next-to-leading order (NLO) using recent parton distribution functions for free (PDF) and bound (nPDF) nucleons. Furthermore, the nuclear modification factor$$R_{\text {pA}}$$ for both collision energies is consistent with unity for$$p_{\textrm{T}}$$ $$>{20}\,\textrm{GeV}/c$$ . However, deviations from unity ($$R_\textrm{pA}<1$$ ) of up to 20% are observed for$$p_{\textrm{T}}$$ $$<{20}\,\textrm{GeV}/c$$ with limited significance, indicating the possible presence of nuclear effects in the initial state of the collision. The suppression increases with decreasing$$p_{\textrm{T}}$$ with a significance of$$2.3\upsigma $$ for a non-zero slope and yields$$R_{\textrm{pA}}<1$$ with a significance of$$1.8\upsigma $$ at$$\sqrt{s_{\textrm{NN}}}={8.16}\,\textrm{TeV}$$ for$$p_{\textrm{T}}$$ $$<{20}\,\textrm{GeV}/c$$ . In addition, a significance of$$1.1\upsigma $$ is observed for$$R_{\textrm{pA}}<1$$ at the lower collision energy$$\sqrt{s_{\textrm{NN}}}={5.02}\,\textrm{TeV}$$ for$$p_{\textrm{T}} < {14}\,\textrm{GeV}/c$$ . The magnitude and shape of the suppression are consistent with pQCD predictions at NLO using nPDFs that incorporate nuclear shadowing effects in the Pb nucleus.more » « less

Abstract A search for exotic decays of the Higgs boson ($$\text {H}$$ ) with a mass of 125$$\,\text {Ge}\hspace{-.08em}\text {V}$$ to a pair of light pseudoscalars$$\text {a}_{1} $$ is performed in final states where one pseudoscalar decays to two$${\textrm{b}}$$ quarks and the other to a pair of muons or$$\tau $$ leptons. A data sample of proton–proton collisions at$$\sqrt{s}=13\,\text {Te}\hspace{-.08em}\text {V} $$ corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 138$$\,\text {fb}^{-1}$$ recorded with the CMS detector is analyzed. No statistically significant excess is observed over the standard model backgrounds. Upper limits are set at 95% confidence level ($$\text {CL}$$ ) on the Higgs boson branching fraction to$$\upmu \upmu \text{ b } \text{ b } $$ and to$$\uptau \uptau \text{ b } \text{ b },$$ via a pair of$$\text {a}_{1} $$ s. The limits depend on the pseudoscalar mass$$m_{\text {a}_{1}}$$ and are observed to be in the range (0.17–3.3) $$\times 10^{-4}$$ and (1.7–7.7) $$\times 10^{-2}$$ in the$$\upmu \upmu \text{ b } \text{ b } $$ and$$\uptau \uptau \text{ b } \text{ b } $$ final states, respectively. In the framework of models with two Higgs doublets and a complex scalar singlet (2HDM+S), the results of the two final states are combined to determine upper limits on the branching fraction$${\mathcal {B}}(\text {H} \rightarrow \text {a}_{1} \text {a}_{1} \rightarrow \ell \ell \text{ b } \text{ b})$$ at 95%$$\text {CL}$$ , with$$\ell $$ being a muon or a$$\uptau $$ lepton. For different types of 2HDM+S, upper bounds on the branching fraction$${\mathcal {B}}(\text {H} \rightarrow \text {a}_{1} \text {a}_{1} )$$ are extracted from the combination of the two channels. In most of the Type II 2HDM+S parameter space,$${\mathcal {B}}(\text {H} \rightarrow \text {a}_{1} \text {a}_{1} )$$ values above 0.23 are excluded at 95%$$\text {CL}$$ for$$m_{\text {a}_{1}}$$ values between 15 and 60$$\,\text {Ge}\hspace{-.08em}\text {V}$$ .more » « less

Abstract A measurement of the dijet production cross section is reported based on proton–proton collision data collected in 2016 at$$\sqrt{s}=13\,\text {Te}\hspace{-.08em}\text {V} $$ by the CMS experiment at the CERN LHC, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of up to 36.3$$\,\text {fb}^{-1}$$ . Jets are reconstructed with the anti-$$k_{\textrm{T}} $$ algorithm for distance parameters of$$R=0.4$$ and 0.8. Cross sections are measured double-differentially (2D) as a function of the largest absolute rapidity$$|y |_{\text {max}} $$ of the two jets with the highest transverse momenta$$p_{\textrm{T}}$$ and their invariant mass$$m_{1,2} $$ , and triple-differentially (3D) as a function of the rapidity separation$$y^{*} $$ , the total boost$$y_{\text {b}} $$ , and either$$m_{1,2} $$ or the average$$p_{\textrm{T}}$$ of the two jets. The cross sections are unfolded to correct for detector effects and are compared with fixed-order calculations derived at next-to-next-to-leading order in perturbative quantum chromodynamics. The impact of the measurements on the parton distribution functions and the strong coupling constant at the mass of the$${\text {Z}} $$ boson is investigated, yielding a value of$$\alpha _\textrm{S} (m_{{\text {Z}}}) =0.1179\pm 0.0019$$ .more » « less
