Title: Proving Our Worth: HBCUs, STEM Partnerships and the Marginalization of Black Women in Industry Settings
University-industry partnerships (UIPs) in STEM expand opportunities for students and incorporate industry experiences into the academic enterprise. While UIPs have increased, few studies explore marginalized students’ experiences within industry settings. Our study addresses this literature gap with an emphasis on Black women in computing from HBCUs. We utilized the Role Strain and Adaptation Model for Black Women’s STEM Success and phenomenological approaches to explore challenges that many Black women encounter in UIPs—specifically structural inequities at the intersection of race and gender; macroaggressions and imposter syndrome. Implications for practice, research, and policy are discussed while noting increasingly complicated climates for diversity efforts.  more » « less

  1. Historically, the African American female population has been underrepresented within the STEM workforce, creating non-inclusive environments. The metaphor of getting a seat at the table reflects the idea of inclusivity where Black women’s opinions are valued, and they can make decisions and create change within the workplace. Intersectionality poses several unique challenges for Black women pursuing careers in the video games industry. We motivate further research on this group through existing literature and insights from running a research group on the group design of human-centered data science games in a collaborative university setting. We take an autoethnographic perspective on the topic, with the first and second authors grounding their findings in their own experiences as Black women in STEM and higher education and with video game development studios. We outline tangible actions toward the recruitment, development, and retention of Black women in the video games industry in the future.

In this qualitative, participatory action research study, we examine how six Black women undergraduate students develop, cultivate, and sustain their healthcare career aspirations while examining challenges Black women undergraduate students experience during their pursuit of a healthcare career. Using community cultural wealth to frame our study, we collected two interviews per participant along with participant-generated photographs. We found that student participants experienced multiple forms of oppression, financial challenges, and lack of access to academic resources, but they were able to persist through support from family, faculty, and peers, along with faith-based practices and creative arts. Findings provide insights for higher education leaders, STEM and health sciences faculty, and the healthcare industry to advance equity for Black women pursuing healthcare careers.

In this research paper, we explore the relationship between undergraduate students’ engineering identity development and their experiences before and during a materials science REU summer internship program. Insufficient diversity in engineering—and STEM fields overall—may impede scientific advancement and stifle innovation [1]. Yet, people of color and women remain highly underrepresented in engineering. According to the National Center for Education Statistics [2], there have been slight increases between 1998 and 2018 in the percentage of engineering bachelor’s degrees awarded to women (from 18.6% to 22.2%) and to Latino citizens and permanent residents (from 6.8% to 10.9%). Meanwhile, the percentage of engineering bachelor’s degrees awarded to Black U.S. citizens and permanent residents decreased from 5% in 1998 to 3.9% in 2018. This entrenched underrepresentation suggests a persistent and systemic problem remains in engineering, as demonstrated in other recent studies [3], [4]. Accordingly, our research examines the experiences of students participating in a broadening participation intervention while attending to their prior experiences in engineering and how their postsecondary experiences in and beyond the intervention shape their engineering identity development.

Given the continuous underrepresentation of Black women in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) fields (Artis et al., 2018; Spencer et al., 2022), this study delves into the nuanced experiences of Black women doctoral candidates in computer science and engineering. Central to this exploration is the multifaceted mental health impact of “onlyness”—a term developed through this research to encapsulate the unique challenges these women face due to their significant underrepresentation. Employing grounded theory (Corbin & Strauss, 2015), interviews with 32 Black women doctoral students revealed not just the challenges of being the only ones in their respective programs but also how these experiences initiate a complex cycle of isolation, self-doubt, impostor syndrome, and substantial emotional and mental distress. This article aims to highlight the critical need for higher education administrators and faculty advisors to adopt intersectional and systemic approaches to support Black women in STEM (Collins & Bilge, 2020; Joshi et al., 2021). Furthermore, it offers insights into the resilience strategies and coping mechanisms these women employ to navigate their doctoral journeys, thereby contributing to discussions on enhancing their retention in STEM graduate programs.

    National discourse about STEM careers has dominated conversations about the need to meet the demands of the labor market. The ever increasing population diversity requires the participation of underrepresented groups, including women and individuals from racially minoritized backgrounds. However, for those at the intersections of historical and persistent marginality, such as Black female students, access to STEM majors, programs, and careers are particularly limited. This article uses observations, four student focus groups, document analysis, and survey data from a Black science conference to understand the experiences of Black women student attendees. Through an intersectional lens, we find that professional conferences can better serve Black female student participants by considering their nuanced experiences, barriers, and contributions to the field.
