Abstract Empirical evaluations of replication have become increasingly common, but there has been no unified approach to doing so. Some evaluations conduct only a single replication study while others run several, usually across multiple laboratories. Designing such programs has largely contended with difficult issues about which experimental components are necessary for a set of studies to be considered replications. However, another important consideration is that replication studies be designed to support sufficiently sensitive analyses. For instance, if hypothesis tests are to be conducted about replication, studies should be designed to ensure these tests are well-powered; if not, it can be difficult to determine conclusively if replication attempts succeeded or failed. This paper describes methods for designing ensembles of replication studies to ensure that they are both adequately sensitive and cost-efficient. It describes two potential analyses of replication studies—hypothesis tests and variance component estimation—and approaches to obtaining optimal designs for them. Using these results, it assesses the statistical power, precision of point estimators and optimality of the design used by the Many Labs Project and finds that while it may have been sufficiently powered to detect some larger differences between studies, other designs would have been less costly and/or produced more precise estimates or higher-powered hypothesis tests.

Despite the emergence of intersectional computing and increased scholarship that utilizes the concept of intersectionality, there is a lack of consensus about the appropriation of intersectionality as a critical framework within the computing education community. Intersectionality provides a critical lens for understanding and analyzing the complexity in human experiences that are shaped by multiple social constructs (race, gender, class, etc.) in mutually influencing ways. What lies at the heart of the matter is acknowledging the humanity of intersectional populations to create safe spaces and a sense of belonging in the computing community. However, using Eurocentric research methods when working with intersectional populations tends to further marginalize them. Calling into question the validity of Eurocentric methods, we argue for alternative ways of knowing in CS education research that affirm intersectional populations. Applying critical autoethnography to our own body of computing education research, we leverage Black feminist epistemologies or Black women’s ways of knowing to differentiate intersectional studies from studies of intersectional populations.more » « less

Spectroscopy in the mm/sub-mm wavelength range is a powerful tool to study the gaseous medium in various astrophysical environments. The next generation Event Horizon Telescope (ngEHT) equipped with a wide-bandwidth backend system has great potential for science using high angular resolution spectroscopy. Spectral line VLBI studies using the ngEHT will enable us to scrutinize compact astrophysical objects obscured by an optically thick medium on unprecedented angular scales. However, the capabilities of ngEHT for spectroscopy and specific scientific applications have not been properly envisioned. In this white paper, we briefly address science cases newly achievable via spectral line VLBI observations in the mm/sub-mm wavelength ranges, and suggest technical requirements to facilitate spectral line VLBI studies in the ngEHT era.more » « less

ABSTRACT: Studies have described a highly convergent plan toward the synthesis of leiodolide A (1), a potent cytotoxic sponge metabolite. The enantiocontrolled preparation of aldehyde 6 is achieved with the application of several advances of methodology for the synthesis of substituted 1,3-oxazoles. Efforts have examined the halogen dance reaction, the selectivity of Stille cross coupling reactions of 4-bromo-1,3-oxazoles, and nucleophilic displacement of the 2-phenylsulfonyl substitu-ent with organolithium reagents as preparatively useful reactions. These techniques have facilitated the efficient synthesis of 6 from the starting bromide 12, alkenylstannane 16 and the primary nonracemic alcohol 25.more » « less

The IceCube Neutrino Observatory at the South Pole has measured the diffuse astrophysical neutrino flux up to ~PeV energies and is starting to identify first point source candidates. The next generation facility, IceCube-Gen2, aims at extending the accessible energy range to EeV in order to measure the continuation of the astrophysical spectrum, to identify neutrino sources, and to search for a cosmogenic neutrino flux. As part of IceCube-Gen2, a radio array is foreseen that is sensitive to detect Askaryan emission of neutrinos beyond ~30 PeV. Surface and deep antenna stations have different benefits in terms of effective area, resolution, and the capability to reject backgrounds from cosmic-ray air showers and may be combined to reach the best sensitivity. The optimal detector configuration is still to be identified. This contribution presents the full-array simulation efforts for a combination of deep and surface antennas, and compares different design options with respect to their sensitivity to fulfill the science goals of IceCube-Gen2.more » « less
