Objective:The COVID-19 pandemic has put unprecedented stress on essential workers and their children. Limited cross-sectional research has found increases in mental health conditions from workload, reduced income, and isolation among essential workers. Less research has been conducted on children of essential workers. We examined trends in the crisis response of essential workers and their children from April 2020 through August 2021. Methods:We investigated the impact during 3 periods of the pandemic on workers and their children using anonymized data from the Crisis Text Line on crisis help-seeking texts for thoughts of suicide or active suicidal ideation (desire, intent, capability, time frame), abuse (emotional, physical, sexual, unspecified), anxiety/stress, grief, depression, isolation, bullying, eating or body image, gender/sexual identity, self-harm, and substance use. We used generalized estimating equations to study the longitudinal change in crisis response across the later stages of the pandemic using adjusted odds ratios (aORs) for worker status and crisis outcomes. Results:Results demonstrated higher odds of crisis outcomes for thoughts of suicide (aOR = 1.06; 95% CI, 1.00-1.12) and suicide capability (aOR = 1.14; 95% CI, 1.02-1.27) among essential workers than among nonessential workers. Children of essential workers had higher odds of substance use than children of nonessential workers (aOR = 1.33; 95% CI, 1.08-1.65), particularly for Indigenous American children (aOR = 2.76; 95% CI, 1.35-5.36). Essential workers (aOR = 1.17; 95% CI, 1.07-1.27) and their children (aOR = 1.18; 95% CI, 1.07-1.30) had higher odds of grief than nonessential workers and their children. Conclusion:Essential workers and their children had elevated crisis outcomes. Immediate and low-cost psychologically supportive interventions are needed to mitigate the mental health impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic on these populations.

Elegies of Absence: Artistic Expressions of Grief by the Children of The Gambia’s Disappeared
Abstract This essay examines how the now-adult children of the disappeared in The Gambia express their grief through various art forms, focusing on the elegy. Peter Sacks, defines the elegy as “a poem of mortal loss and consolation” (Sacks 3). The traditional functions of the elegy—lament, praise, and consolation—respond to loss by expressing grief and honoring the deceased. The essay explores the mourning process of three young adults through songwriting, letter writing, and memorial tattoos dedicated to their fathers who disappeared during Yahya Jammeh’s dictatorship. In an Islamic context, where retaining objects of the deceased is discouraged, these children find ways to remember their lost parents without material objects. Cathy Caruth argues that “to be traumatized is precisely to be possessed by an image or event” (Caruth 4–5). Here, it is the absence of a clear image and event that haunts these children, leading to artistic creation through elegiac writing and embodied meaning-making.

When bereaved individuals seek online support in response to the suicide of a loved one, their expressions of grief take many forms. Although the intense grief expressions individuals bereaved by suicide commonly share in private therapeutic settings can be helpful in healing from traumatic loss, these same expressions may potentially cause harm to others when shared in a public online support community. In this study, we present a qualitative analysis of letters posted on the r/SuicideBereavement subreddit, and comments replying to those posts, to explore what diverse expressions of grief additionally demand of platform design. We find that letter posts contain potentially harmful grief expressions that, in this community, generate mutual support among community members. Informed by our findings, this study considers the design challenges for online platforms as they simultaneously support users receiving support and healing through sharing certain grief expressions, while also supporting users who will be harmed by exposure to those grief expressions. Taking inspiration from offline therapy modalities, we consider the design implications of creating specialized online grief support spaces for diverse grief expressions.more » « less

An automated writing evaluation (AWE) system that supports students in revising their essays is thus essential. We present eRevise+RF, an enhanced AWE system for assessing student essay revisions (e.g., changes made to an essay to improve its quality in response to essay feedback) and providing revision feedback. We deployed the system with 6 teachers and 406 students across 3 schools in Pennsylvania and Louisiana. The results confirmed its effectiveness in (1) assessing student essays in terms of evidence usage, (2) extracting evidence and reasoning revisions across essays, and (3) determining revision success in responding to feedback. The evaluation also suggested eRevise+RF is a helpful system for young students to improve their argumentative writing skills through revision and formative feedback.more » « less

Clinical group bereavement therapy often promotes narrative sharing as a therapeutic intervention to facilitate grief processing. Increasingly, people turn to social media to express stories of loss and seek support surrounding bereavement experiences, specifically, the loss of loved ones from suicide. This paper reports the results of a computational linguistic analysis of narrative expression within an online suicide bereavement support community. We identify distinctive characteristics of narrative posts (compared to non-narrative posts) in linguistic style. We then develop and validate a machine-learning model for tagging narrative posts at scale and demonstrate the utility of applying this machine-learning model to a more general grief support community. Through comparison, we validate our model's narrative tagging accuracy and compare the proportion of narrative posts between the two communities we have analyzed. Narrative posts make up about half of all total posts in these two grief communities, demonstrating the importance of narrative posts to grief support online. Finally, we consider how the narrative tagging tool presented in this study can be applied to platform design to more effectively support people expressing the narrative sharing of grief in online grief support spaces.more » « less

For help with their spelling errors, children often turn to spellcheckers integrated in software applications like word processors and search engines. However, existing spellcheckers are usually tuned to the needs of traditional users (i.e., adults) and generally prove unsatisfactory for children. Motivated by this issue, we introduce KidSpell, an English spellchecker oriented to the spelling needs of children. KidSpell applies (i) an encoding strategy for mapping both misspelled words and spelling suggestions to their phonetic keys and (ii) a selection process that prioritizes candidate spelling suggestions that closely align with the misspelled word based on their respective keys. To assess the effectiveness of, we compare the model’s performance against several popular, mainstream spellcheckers in a number of offline experiments using existing and novel datasets. The results of these experiments show that KidSpell outperforms existing spellcheckers, as it accurately prioritizes relevant spelling corrections when handling misspellings generated by children in both essay writing and online search tasks. As a byproduct of our study, we create two new datasets comprised of spelling errors generated by children from hand-written essays and web search inquiries, which we make available to the research community.more » « less
