Title: Fostering Ethical AI Integration in First-Year Writing: A Case Study on Human-Tool Collaboration in Artificial Intelligence Literacy
As artificial intelligence (AI) tools become integral to education, fostering ethical engagement and academic integrity is paramount. This column explores the integration of AI tools, including Grammarly, Scholarcy, and ImageFX, into a first-year writing program to promote ethical AI literacy. Grounded in Lo’s CLEAR framework, structured exercises emphasized critical thinking, intellectual agency, and human-AI collaboration. The study highlights the potential for AI to enhance learning while addressing challenges such as equity, accessibility, and ethical considerations. Findings demonstrate how intentional integration of AI tools fosters creativity, self-reflection, and responsible decision-making, providing a scalable model for incorporating AI into curricula while preserving student agency and integrity.  more » « less

  1. This column explores the practical considerations and institutional strategies for adopting Generative Artificial Intelligence (GenAI) tools in academic libraries. As higher education institutions increasingly integrate AI into teaching, research, and student support, libraries play a pivotal role in guiding ethical, inclusive, and pedagogically sound implementation. Drawing on case studies from Clemson University, Wake Forest University, and Goldey-Beacom College, the column examines key areas of GenAI integration: contract negotiations, licensing models, trial and pilot program design, data privacy, accessibility, authentication, analytics, training, and ethical use. The article emphasizes the importance of aligning AI adoption with institutional missions, user agency, and evolving frameworks of AI literacy. Recommendations are provided for libraries of all sizes to navigate the dynamic GenAI landscape responsibly and equitably, ensuring that academic integrity and student-centered values remain at the core of AI integration.

This work-in-progress paper explores university students’ perspectives on Generative Artificial Intelligence (GAI) tools, such as ChatGPT, an increasingly prominent topic in the academic community. There is ongoing debate about whether faculty should teach students how to use GAI tools, restrict their usage to maintain academic integrity, or establish regulatory guidelines for sustained integration into higher education. Unfortunately, limited research exists beyond surface-level policies and educator opinions regarding GAI, and its full impact on student learning remains largely unknown. Therefore, understanding students' perceptions and how they use GAI is crucial to ensuring its effective and ethical integration into higher education. As GAI continues to disrupt traditional educational paradigms, this study seeks to explore how students perceive its influence on their learning and problem-solving. As part of a larger mixed-methods study, this work-in-progress paper presents preliminary findings from the qualitative portion using a phenomenological approach that answers the research question: How do university students perceive disruptive technologies like ChatGPT affecting their education and learning? By exploring the implications of Artificial Intelligence (AI) tools on student learning, academic integrity, individual beliefs, and community norms, this study contributes to the broader discourse on the role of emerging technologies in shaping the future of teaching and learning in education.

  3. Artificial Intelligence (AI) and its impact on education is a topic gaining attention due to the opportunities and challenges it presents for K-12 classrooms. While educators are crucial in integrating AI technology into instruction, empirical evidence documenting elementary educators’ perceptions of AI and its integration in classroom instruction is scarce. This study explores elementary educators’ perceptions of AI during and after participation in a professional development (PD) program which incorporated AI-focused sessions. Analyzing data from interviews, exit tickets, and group discussions, findings indicate that perceptions are shaped by factors such as the perceived usefulness of AI tools, ethical considerations, risks for younger students, and pedagogical concerns. Further, findings indicate that educators responded positively to the AI concepts and associated resources introduced in the PD. These findings offer important insights for research, practice, and policy to better support educators’ AI integration into classroom instruction.

GeoDesign is undergoing a methodological shift through its integration with Urban Digital Twins (UDTs) and artificial intelligence (AI), moving from static spatial analysis to interactive and justice-oriented planning practices. This editorial reframes GeoDesign as both ethical and civic efforts. While digital twin technologies enable participatory planning and multiscalar data integration, they also raise concerns about bias, transparency, and governance. The six contributions in this special issue examine frameworks for ethical design, participatory tools, data interoperability, housing policy modeling, and planning pedagogy. Collectively, they advance the field of Ethical GeoDesign, emphasizing accountability, representation, and equity in UDTs.

  5. As artificial intelligence (AI) rapidly evolves, its integration into civil engineering presents both significant opportunities and challenges. Through a qualitative analysis of interview, survey, and reflection journal data, this study explores the perspectives of early-career civil engineers regarding the current and potential roles of AI in engineering practice. While AI is seen as a valuable tool for automating routine tasks and enhancing efficiency, concerns persist about its reliability, ethical implications, and potential overreliance. Participants emphasized the importance of maintaining human oversight, with AI serving as an aid rather than a replacement for engineering judgment. The study identifies key competencies essential for engineers to effectively and ethically integrate AI, including AI literacy, critical thinking, ethics, and cybersecurity awareness. As AI continues to influence the field, it is crucial to equip engineers with these competencies through education and ongoing professional development. The paper offers recommendations for integrating responsible AI practices into engineering education and the workplace, highlighting the need for continuous training in both technical skills and ethical decision-making. This research contributes to the growing literature on responsible AI integration, providing insights that can guide the future workforce in navigating the complexities of AI-enhanced engineering practices.
