Title: Social patterns underlying a new group formation in olive baboons
In group-living animals, social and ecological challenges can push groups to fission into two or more ‘daughter’ groups. Here, we describe the demographic and social behavioral changes that were associated with the formation of a new group of olive baboons (Papio anubis) in Laikipia, Kenya. The process began when a high-ranking natal male transferred into a nearby study group, which coincided with the dispersal of several adult females. The dispersing females had close social ties with this male, and he had sired most of their current offspring. After a stint in the neighboring group, these animals eventually budded off to form a new, separate group. Throughout the fission process, female-female grooming was strongly predicted by eventual fission outcomes. In other words, females groomed most with the females they would remain with after the fission. By contrast, female-male grooming was prevalent in co-resident dyads but less strictly predicted by eventual fission outcomes. Although rates of aggression were elevated during periods when females dispersed, females who moved between groups were not targeted for eviction. Intergroup grooming remained elevated throughout the fission process, particularly between mixed-sex dyads, suggesting that group boundaries may have remained somewhat blurred. Taken together, the formation of this new group appears to have been a product of social factors including elevated levels of female-female aggression and females’ affinity for particular males.  more » « less

  1. Abstract Many mammalian species display sex differences in the frequency of play behavior, yet the animal literature includes few longitudinal studies of play, which are important for understanding the developmental timing of sex differences and the evolutionary functions of play. We analyzed social play, solitary play, and grooming using an 18‐year data set on 38 wild white‐faced capuchin monkeys (Cebus capucinus) followed since infancy. Rates of each behavior were measured as the proportion of point samples taken during focal follows in which the individual engaged in each behavior. To determine sex differences in these rates, we ran a series of generalized linear mixed models, considering both linear and quadratic effects of age, and chose the optimal model for each of the three behavioral outcomes based on information criteria. Rates of both social play and solitary play decreased with age, with the exception of social play in males, which increased in the early juvenile period before decreasing. Male and female capuchins had different developmental patterns of social play, with males playing more than females during most of the juvenile period, but they did not display meaningful sex differences in solitary play rates. Additionally, males and females had different patterns of grooming over the lifespan: males participated in grooming at low rates throughout their lives, while adult females participated in grooming at much higher rates, peaking around age 11 years before declining. We suggest that male and female white‐faced capuchins may adopt alternative social bonding strategies, including different developmental timing and different behaviors (social play for males vs. grooming for females). Our results were consistent with two functional hypotheses of play, the practice and bonding hypotheses. This study demonstrates that play behavior may be critical for the development of sex‐specific social strategies and emphasizes the importance of developmental perspectives on social behaviors.

  2. Behavioral traits are often the first response to changing environmental conditions, including human induced rapid environmental change. For example, animals living in urban areas are often more aggressive than rural animals. This is especially evident in songbirds; males of several species display elevated aggression in urban habitats. Increased male aggression has been associated with reduced parental care, but the consequences of this trade-off for males, social partners, and offspring in the context of urbanization remains unclear. We explored the effects of increased urban male aggression on the life history traits, parental care, and offspring outcomes of song sparrows (Melospiza melodia). We predicted that urban males would reduce paternal investment and result in urban females providing greater nestling care or reduced fledging success in urban habitats compared to rural. Contrary to our prediction, aggressive urban males did not decrease care but visited the nest more often compared to rural males. Additionally, urban birds had higher nest and fledging success compared to rural, though this was largely due to higher nest predation in rural habitats. Our study is among the first to evaluate trade-offs associated with elevated aggression expressed by urban animals and adds to a growing body of evidence that urban habitats provide benefits to some species.

  3. When group-living animals develop individualized social relationships, they often regulate cooperation and conflict through a dominance hierarchy. Female common vampire bats have been an experimental system for studying cooperative relationships, yet surprisingly little is known about female conflict. Here, we recorded the outcomes of 1023 competitive interactions over food provided ad libitum in a captive colony of 33 vampire bats (24 adult females and their young). We found a weakly linear dominance hierarchy using three common metrics (Landau's h ’ measure of linearity, triangle transitivity and directional consistency). However, patterns of female dominance were less structured than in many other group-living mammals. Female social rank was not clearly predicted by body size, age, nor reproductive status, and competitive interactions were not correlated with kinship, grooming nor food sharing. We therefore found no evidence that females groomed or shared food up a hierarchy or that differences in rank explained asymmetries in grooming or food sharing. A possible explanation for such apparently egalitarian relationships among female vampire bats is the scale of competition. Female vampire bats that are frequent roostmates might not often directly compete for food in the wild.

  4. While strong maternal relationships have been linked with improved offspring survival in many mammals, maternal sociality appears to provide little protection against infanticidal males. Here, we evaluated whether maternal social integration predicts offspring survival to adulthood in geladas (Theropithecus gelada), a non-human primate that faces frequent alpha male takeovers coupled with high rates of infanticide. Mothers that formed stronger grooming relationships with their female and male groupmates showed higher offspring survival on average. However, when their infants experienced early-life takeovers and faced elevated infanticide risk, these survival advantages were weaker, delayed to juvenility and linked only to female–female grooming relationships. Thus, long-term social integration was not associated with reduced infanticide risk. Given this, we then examined whether females engaged in short-term social strategies that might provide more targeted protection against would-be male attackers. Following takeovers, females—particularly those with young, vulnerable infants—groomed males less frequently and prioritized deposed, protective males (i.e. their infants’ presumed fathers) over new, potentially infanticidal males. Taken together, these data suggest that gelada mothers: (i) form long-term social relationships that might improve net offspring survival and (ii) implement short-term social strategies that might protect their offspring in ways that long-term relationships cannot.

  5. Abstract In group‐living species, integrating into a new social group after dispersal is an important life history milestone associated with physical and social challenges. Generally, this process seems to be accompanied by heightened glucocorticoid (GC) concentrations; however, most studies of physiological responses to group transfer have been conducted on species with despotic social relationships, where integrating individuals are often targets of frequent aggression. Here we present data on fecal glucocorticoid (fGC) concentrations during periods of unstable group membership for male woolly monkeys (Lagothrix lagotricha poeppigii), a species with extremely low rates of male–male aggression and generally tolerant male–male associations. We collected data on males in four study groups at the Tiputini Biodiversity Station, Ecuador, and observed three attempted transfer events, involving a total of four adult males, in one study group. We observed only three instances of overt aggression (chases) between males across the entire study period, though male display behaviors were more frequent. We tested whether rates of displays were higher during periods of unstable group membership using a generalized linear mixed model (LMM). We also examined whether male status, group stability, and the occurrence of intergroup encounters affected fGC concentrations using LMMs. Contrary to our predictions, rates of display behaviors were not higher during periods of unstable group membership. However, both transient/integrating males and those who were already group members showed elevated fGC concentrations during these unstable periods. Our results suggest that even in species with tolerant male–male relationships, the integration of unfamiliar individuals can provoke an increase in GCs.
