Title: Molecular Simulation of CO 2 /CH 4 Transport and Separation in Polystyrene- block -poly(ethylene oxide)/Ionic Liquid (IL) Membranes: Insights into Nanoconfined IL Effects
The phenomenon of ionic liquid (IL) nanoconfinement within a copolymer/IL membrane reportedly enhances membrane selectivity, solubility, and transport in gas separations. Also, the copolymer/IL membrane morphology has been found to affect IL stability at high transmembrane pressures. In this work, a combined mesoscopic dynamics simulation and hybrid grand canonical Monte Carlo/molecular dynamics (GCMC-MD) simulations were carried out to investigate the morphologies, as well as CO2/CH4 gas diffusivities, solubilities, and selectivities of polystyrene-b-poly(ethylene oxide) (PS-b-PEO)/1-Ethyl-3-methylimidazolium thiocyanate ([EMIM][SCN]) and PS-b-PEO/1-Ethyl-3-methylimidazolium bis(trifluoromethylsulfonyl)imide ([EMIM][Tf2N]) membranes. The latter simulations focused on nanoconfined ILs in the copolymer/IL phase boundaries at 2.5 and 5 nm confinement lengths. The investigated systems were four nanoconfined ILs, i.e., PS/[EMIM][SCN]/PEO (the IL forming a separate microphase, denoted IL-Micro), PS/[EMIM][Tf2N]/PEO, PS/[EMIM][SCN]-PEO/PS (the IL distributed in the PEO phase, denoted IL-PEO), and PS/[EMIM][Tf2N]-PEO/PS, and five control systems, i.e., PS/PEO/PS, bulk PS, bulk PEO, bulk [EMIM][SCN], and bulk [EMIM][Tf2N]. Based on the mesoscopic dynamics simulation results, the dominant membrane morphologies at IL loadings of <50 vol % were lamellar or cylindrical (favorable for both IL stability at high transmembrane pressures if the bedding planes are horizontal, i.e. at 90° to the nominal direction of the transmembrane pressure gradient) with the IL-PEO or IL-Micro phases. Also, there was an overall 50% match between the observed PS-b-PEO/[EMIM][SCN] and PS-b-PEO/[EMIM][Tf2N] membrane morphologies. Based on the MD simulation results, both CO2 and CH4 diffusivities were the smallest in the bulk PS (control) and highest in the PS/[EMIM][Tf2N]/PEO system (IL-Micro between the PS and PEO phases) at both confinement lengths. The CO2 diffusivities were, on average, larger when the confinement length increased to 5 nm. The GCMC-MD results indicated that the CO2 solubility in the IL-Micro phases was higher than in the corresponding bulk ILs at both confinement lengths, with the PS/[EMIM][Tf2N]/PEO system exhibiting the highest CO2 solubility, followed by the PS/[EMIM][SCN]/PEO system. Additionally, the permselectivities of the nanoconfined IL systems were, on average, 40–50% larger than those of the bulk systems, with the highest permselectivity observed for PS/[EMIM][Tf2N]/PEO at the confinement length of 5 nm. Overall, the IL nanoconfinement between the PS and PEO phases (IL-Micro) leads to significant improvements in the CO2/CH4 permselectivities, suggesting that strategies to create nanoconfined IL morphologies in the copolymer/IL membranes are very promising for optimizing the membrane gas separation performance.  more » « less

Three new isomeric 6FDA-based polyimide-ionenes, with imidazolium moieties and varying regiochemistry (para-, meta-, and ortho- connectivity), and composites with three different ionic liquids (ILs) have been developed as gas separation membranes. The structural-property relationships and gas separation behaviors of the newly developed 6FDA polyimide-ionene + IL composites have been extensively studied. All the 6FDA-based polyimide-ionenes exhibited good compatibility with the ILs and produced homogeneous hybrid membranes with the high thermal stability of ~380 °C. Particularly, [6FDA I4A pXy][Tf2N] ionene + IL hybrids having [C4mim][Tf2N] and [Bnmim][Tf2N] ILs offered mechanically stable matrixes with high CO2 affinity. The permeability of CO2 was increased by factors of 2 and 3 for C4mim and Bnmim hybrids (2.15 to 6.32 barrers), respectively, compared to the neat [6FDA I4A pXy][Tf2N] without sacrificing their permselectivity for CO2/CH4 and CO2/N2 gas pairs.

  2. In this paper, the solubility properties of the ionic liquid (IL), 1-ethyl-3-methylimidazolium tetrafluoroborate ([EMIM][BF4]) were studied using a high-pressure, high-temperature set-up employing the pressure-drop technique. [EMIM][BF4] was selected for study because it is used as the sweep liquid in a membrane reactor (MR)-based methanol synthesis (MR-MeS) process recently proposed and studied by our group. The MR-MeS studies indicated high methanol (MeOH) solubilities in the IL under typical MeS reaction conditions, which then motivated this study to measure such solubilities directly under non-reactive conditions to validate the findings of the MR study. In addition, during the MR-MeS studies a concern existed about the solubility of CO2 in [EMIM][BF4], since it is a reactant in the MeS process and its dissolution in the sweep liquid would be detrimental for reactor performance. Studies, therefore, were also carried out to investigate the solubility of CO2, in addition to MeOH, in the IL. Our investigation indicates that though CO2 solubilities in the [EMIM][BF4] are high at room temperature, they become negligible at the typical MeS operating conditions (i.e., temperatures above 200 ⁰C).

  3. Abstract This study examines the activity of chemisorbed CO2 species in the microenvironment formed by bifunctional ionic liquids (ILs) in the reactive capture and conversion (RCC) of CO2 to CO on silver. Comparative electroanalytical measurements with imidazolium based ILs were performed to probe the impact of electrostatic interactions, anion and cation basicity, and hydrogen bonding on RCC. Particularly, ILs with 1-ethyl,3-methylimidazolium ([EMIM]+) and 1-ethyl, 2,3-methylimidazolium ([EMMIM]+) cations and aprotic heterocyclic anions of 2-cyanopyrrolide ([2-CNpyr]) and 1,2,4-triazolide ([1,2,4-Triz]) were examined for RCC. It was found that anion–CO2 carbamate complexes facilitate RCC at significantly lower overpotentials compared to cation–CO2 carboxylate complexes. Additionally, [EMIM]+ was found to better stabilize anion–CO2 complexes than [EMMIM]+. Furthermore, it was found that 2-CNpyrH that naturally forms in CO2 absorption competes for electrode surface adsorption with the anion–CO2 carbamate complex, thereby reducing the electrochemical activity of the anion–CO2 complex. These results highlight the importance of IL structure in tuning the interfacial interactions and suggest that ILs with anion-dominated CO2 chemisorption enhances CO2 utilization in RCC applications.

  4. In our prior study [Olowookere, F. V.; Turner, C. H. J. Phys. Chem. B 2023, 127(42), 9144–9154], we introduced a new scaling relationship to predict gas solute diffusion at challenging conditions, focusing on CO2 and SO2 diffusion in multivalent ionic liquid (IL) solvents. This work extends our initial exploratory study into a much broader array of systems, encompassing additional solutes (N2, CH4, C2H6, C3H8, C3H8O, and H2O) and a variety of different ionic liquid species ([Bzmim3]3+, [Bzmim4]4+, [BMIM]+, [EMIM]+, [HMIM]+, [NapO2]2–, [BzO3]3–, [BF4]−, [Tf2N]−, and [PF6]−). Our study demonstrates a remarkably robust logarithmic correlation between solute diffusion and solvent accessible surface area (SA) across 20 different additional systems. We perform comprehensive analyses of the underlying molecular phenomena responsible for this correlation, including solute lifetime distributions, void space dynamics, and Voronoi tessellation, in order to elucidate a stronger mechanistic understanding of this behavior. Our findings highlight a direct link between the solvent accessible SA and the size of the void domains. Overall, our scaling approach provides an efficient and reliable approach for predicting diffusion from analyses of short simulations at higher temperatures.

Here, we report the synthesis and thermophysical properties of seven primarily aromatic, imidazolium-based polyamide ionenes. The effects of varied para-, meta-, and ortho-connectivity, and spacing of ionic and amide functional groups, on structural and thermophysical properties were analyzed. Suitable, robust derivatives were cast into thin films, neat, or with stoichiometric equivalents of the ionic liquid (IL) 1-benzy-3-methylimidazolium bistriflimide ([Bnmim][Tf2N]), and the gas transport properties of these membranes were measured. Pure gas permeabilities and permselectivities for N2, CH4, and CO2 are reported. Consistent para-connectivity in the backbone was shown to yield the highest CO2 permeability and suitability for casting as a very thin, flexible film. Derivatives containing terephthalamide segments exhibited the highest CO2/CH4 and CO2/N2 selectivities, yet CO2 permeability decreased with further deviation from consistent para-linkages.
