Title: slick: Modeling a Universe of Molecular Line Luminosities in Hydrodynamical Simulations
Abstract We presentslick(the Scalable Line Intensity Computation Kit), a software package that calculates realistic CO, [Ci], and [Cii] luminosities for clouds and galaxies formed in hydrodynamic simulations. Built on the radiative transfer codedespotic, slickcomputes the thermal, radiative, and statistical equilibrium in concentric zones of model clouds, based on their physical properties and individual environments. We validate our results by applyingslickto the high-resolution run of theSimbasimulations, testing the derived luminosities against empirical and theoretical/analytic relations. To simulate the line emission from a universe of emitting clouds, we have incorporated random forest machine learning (ML) methods into our approach, allowing us to predict cosmologically evolving properties of CO, [Ci], and [Cii] emission from galaxies such as luminosity functions. We tested this model in 100,000 gas particles, and 2500 galaxies, reaching an average accuracy of ∼99.8% for all lines. Finally, we present the first model light cones created with realistic and ML-predicted CO, [Ci], and [Cii] luminosities in cosmological hydrodynamical simulations, fromz= 0 toz= 10.  more » « less

  1. Abstract We present a survey undertaken with the Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA) to study the galaxies associated with a representative sample of 16 damped Lyαabsorbers (DLAs) atz ≈ 4.1–4.5, using the [Cii] 158μm ([Cii]) line. We detect seven [Cii]-emitting galaxies in the fields of five DLAs, all of which have absorption metallicity [M/H] > −1.5. We find that the detectability of these Hi-selected galaxies with ALMA is a strong function of DLA metallicity, with a detection rate of 7 1−20+11 % for DLAs with [M/H] > −1.5 and 0+18% for DLAs with [M/H] < −1.5. The identified DLA galaxies have far-IR properties similar to those of typical star-forming galaxies atz ∼ 4, with estimated obscured star formation rates ranging from ≲6M⊙yr−1to 110M⊙yr−1. High-metallicity DLAs therefore provide an efficient way to identify and study samples of high-redshift, star-forming galaxies, without preselecting the galaxies by their emission properties. The agreement between the velocities of the metal absorption lines of the DLA and the [Cii] emission line of the DLA galaxy indicates that the metals within the DLA originated in the galaxy. With observed impact parameters between 14 and 59 kpc, this indicates that star-forming galaxies atz ∼ 4 have a substantial reservoir of dense, cold, neutral gas within their circumgalactic medium that has been enriched with metals from the galaxy.

  2. Abstract We present the first localized detections of the cold neutral medium (CNM) in IC 10, offering a rare view of dense atomic gas in a low-metallicity (Z/Z⊙ ∼ 0.27) dwarf galaxy. As a low-metallicity starburst, IC 10’s interstellar medium conditions could reflect small scale physics conditions that mirror those of early galaxies, providing a unique window into the heating and cooling processes that shaped the interstellar medium in early-Universe environments. Leveraging the high angular (<5″ ∼ 15 pc) and spectral (0.4 km s−1) resolution of the Local GroupL-band Survey, we searched for HIabsorption against nine continuum radio sources and detected absorption along three sightlines corresponding to internal radio emission sources within IC 10. Using Gaussian decomposition and radiative transfer, we characterize the CNM, deriving spin temperatures of ∼30–55 K, column densities of (0.6–3.0) × 1021cm−2, cold HIfractions of ∼21%–37%, and line widths of ∼5.6–13.6 km s−1. For each individual detection of HIabsorption, we find corresponding molecular emission from12CO (J= 1–0), HCO+(J= 1–0), and HCN (J= 1–0) at similar velocities and with comparable line widths, indicating a well-mixed cold atomic and molecular medium. In IC 10, the CNM shows a clear kinematic connection to the high-density ISM, implying a stronger dynamical coupling with molecular gas than in the Milky Way, in line with expectations for low-metallicity environments. At the ∼15 pc scales probed by slightly extended HIIregions in IC 10, unresolved CNM clouds likely contribute to line blending, so the observed broad HIline widths may partly reflect spatial and kinematic averaging.

  3. Abstract We present the first spatially resolved maps of gas-phase metallicity for two dust-obscured star-forming galaxies atz∼ 4, from the JWST TEMPLATES Early Release Science program, derived from NIRSpec integral field unit spectroscopy of the Hαand [Nii] emission lines. Empirical optical line calibrations are used to determine that the sources are globally enriched to near-solar levels. While one source shows elevated [N ii]/Hαratios and broad Hαemission consistent with the presence of an active galactic nucleus in a ≳1 kpc region, we argue that both systems have already undergone significant metal enrichment as a result of their extremely high star formation rates. Utilizing Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array rest-frame 380μm continuum and [Ci](3P2–3P1) line maps we compare the spatial variation of the metallicity and gas-to-dust ratio in the two galaxies, finding the two properties to be anticorrelated on highly resolved spatial scales, consistent with various literature studies ofz∼ 0 galaxies. The data are indicative of the enormous potential of JWST to probe the enrichment of the interstellar medium on ∼kpc scales in extremely dust-obscured systems atz∼ 4 and beyond.

  4. Abstract We present Keck Cosmic Web Imager Lyαintegral field spectroscopy of the fields surrounding 14 damped Lyαabsorbers (DLAs) atz≈ 2. Of these 14 DLAs, nine have high metallicities ([M/H] > − 0.3), and four of those nine feature a CO-emitting galaxy at an impact parameter ≲30 kpc. Our search reaches median Lyαline flux sensitivities of ∼2 × 10−17erg s−1cm−2over apertures of ∼6 kpc and out to impact parameters of ∼50 kpc. We recover the Lyαflux of three known Lyα-emitting Hi-selected galaxies in our sample. In addition, we find two Lyαemitters at impact parameters of ≈50–70 kpc from the high-metallicity DLA atz≈ 1.96 toward QSO B0551-366. This field also contains a massive CO-emitting galaxy at an impact parameter of ≈15 kpc. Apart from the field with QSO B0551-366, we do not detect significant Lyαemission in any of the remaining eight high-metallicity DLA fields. Considering the depth of our observations and our ability to recover previously known Lyαemitters, we conclude that Hi-selected galaxies associated with high-metallicity DLAs atz≈ 2 are dusty and therefore might feature low Lyαescape fractions. Our results indicate that complementary approaches—using Lyα, CO, Hα, and [Cii] 158μm emission—are necessary to identify the wide range of galaxy types associated withz≈ 2 DLAs.

  5. Characterizing the physical conditions (density, temperature, ionization state, metallicity, etc) of the interstellar medium is critical to improving our understanding of the formation and evolution of galaxies. In this work, we present a multi-line study of the interstellar medium in the host galaxy of a quasar atz ≈ 6.4, that is, when the universe was 840 Myr old. This galaxy is one of the most active and massive objects emerging from the dark ages and therefore represents a benchmark for models of the early formation of massive galaxies. We used the Atacama Large Millimeter Array to target an ensemble of tracers of ionized, neutral, and molecular gas, namely the following fine-structure lines: [O III] 88 μm, [N II] 122 μm, [C II] 158 μm, and [C I] 370 μm – as well as the rotational transitions of CO(7–6), CO(15–14), CO(16–15), and CO(19–18); OH 163.1 μm and 163.4 μm; along with H2O 3(0,3)–2(1,2), 3(3,1)–4(0,4), 3(3,1)–3(2,2), 4(0,4)–3(1,3), and 4(3,2)–4(2,3). All the targeted fine-structure lines were detected, along with half of the targeted molecular transitions. By combining the associated line luminosities with the constraints on the dust temperature from the underlying continuum emission and predictions from photoionization models of the interstellar medium, we find that the ionized phase accounts for about one-third of the total gaseous mass budget and is responsible for half of the total [C II] emission. This phase is characterized by a high density (n ∼ 180 cm−3) that typical of HII regions. The spectral energy distribution of the photoionizing radiation is comparable to that emitted by B-type stars. Star formation also appears to be driving the excitation of the molecular medium. We find marginal evidence for outflow-related shocks in the dense molecular phase, but not in other gas phases. This study showcases the power of multi-line investigations in unveiling the properties of the star-forming medium in galaxies at cosmic dawn.
