Title: Facets of Team Equity: A Scoping Review
This article presents the findings of a scoping review looking at conceptualizations of team equity in academic literature between 2017 and 2021. A search and filter process produced a set of 42 publications containing discussion of equity or equality at the team level. A qualitative thematic analysis was carried out on the data resulting in a set of seven themes characterized as facets of team equity: alignment, dialogism, heterophily, participation, power, ownership, and risk. Each facet is presented and illustrated with excerpts from the scoping review data followed by implications for the operationalization of equity at the team level. This analysis sheds light on the multi-dimensionality of equity in a team space, providing context for discussions about the difficulty of using simple quantitative measures for such a complex phenomenon. We hope the facets help researchers and practitioners use and operationalize the concept in ongoing efforts to combat historically-grounded injustices.  more » « less

  1. This full paper sets out a methodological protocol for conducting a scoping review of literature relating to teamwork effectiveness and equity. The goal of the study is to understand how academic discourse over the five-year period prior to the study being carried out has conceptualized teamwork success in educational and professional contexts, and to what extent equitable team practices are embedded within such conceptualizations. In line with ongoing initiatives to promote transparency in research, this protocol paper is intended for dissemination prior to the conduct of the study itself. The research context, questions, and rationale are set out, and a detailed methodology described, outlining procedures for data retrieval, screening, extraction, and analysis. The paper concludes with an outline of intended reporting methods for the study, including the reporting of deviations from the procedures set out herein. This paper contributes to the scoping review methodology, and especially its application in the field of engineering education research and education research more broadly.

    ABSTRACT This integrative literature review analyzes the corpus of biology education research published in the main biology education journals of major professional societies. The goal of this analysis is to determine which approaches (including groups of focus, research methods, and settings/perspectives) from social science fields (i.e., psychology, sociology, and anthropology) are utilized in published peer-reviewed biology education research relating to diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI). Scoping how social science approaches are used in this area is important to understanding whether biology education research could benefit from complementary approaches that might advance praxis. This analysis found that research informing the biology education community draws heavily from psychological perspectives that are overwhelmingly not disaggregated (78% of articles identifying a group lumped the participant together), are by far more quantitative (58% used survey, 26% grades, 20% school data) than qualitative (17% used interview, 10% observation), and did not adopt structural approaches (72%). The addition of missing contributions from social science is critical to advancing interventions to broaden STEM participation, given that merging paradigms can offer more robust, multi-level explanations for observed phenomena. This has important implications for education, biology education, biology education research, social science, and research in related STEM fields.

With the emergence of self-tracking devices that collect and produce real-time personal data, it is becoming increasingly necessary to innovate data literacy frameworks and student curricula to address new competencies in data handling, visualization, and use. We examine the evolution of data literacy frameworks across the past 7 years, specifically focusing on the inclusion of self-data competencies. We analyzed existing data literacy frameworks to identify common phases of data engagement. A scoping review of published data literacy frameworks was conducted, and 23 studies were included for analysis. Results from this scoping review demonstrate the existence of at least eight sequential phases of data engagement to develop data literacy. Two of these phases address personal or self-data competencies. We then describe a curriculum that addresses these eight phases of data engagement by pairing biometric devices with online tools and educational materials to scaffold self-data knowledge, skills, and attitudes. Based on this, we conclude with the need to propose holistic data literacy education programmes, considering the curriculum as a model to guide similar materials aimed at fostering emerging data competencies.

  5. The rise of complex AI systems in healthcare and other sectors has led to a growing area of research called Explainable AI (XAI) designed to increase transparency. In this area, quantitative and qualitative studies focus on improving user trust and task performance by providing system- and prediction-level XAI features. We analyze stakeholder engagement events (interviews and workshops) on the use of AI for kidney transplantation. From this we identify themes which we use to frame a scoping literature review on current XAI features. The stakeholder engagement process lasted over nine months covering three stakeholder group's workflows, determining where AI could intervene and assessing a mock XAI decision support system. Based on the stakeholder engagement, we identify four major themes relevant to designing XAI systems – 1) use of AI predictions, 2) information included in AI predictions, 3) personalization of AI predictions for individual differences, and 4) customizing AI predictions for specific cases. Using these themes, our scoping literature review finds that providing AI predictions before, during, or after decision-making could be beneficial depending on the complexity of the stakeholder's task. Additionally, expert stakeholders like surgeons prefer minimal to no XAI features, AI prediction, and uncertainty estimates for easy use cases. However, almost all stakeholders prefer to have optional XAI features to review when needed, especially in hard-to-predict cases. The literature also suggests that providing both system and prediction-level information is necessary to build the user's mental model of the system appropriately. Although XAI features improve users' trust in the system, human-AI team performance is not always enhanced. Overall, stakeholders prefer to have agency over the XAI interface to control the level of information based on their needs and task complexity. We conclude with suggestions for future research, especially on customizing XAI features based on preferences and tasks.
