We study the spectral stability of smooth, small-amplitude periodic traveling wave solutions of the Novikov equation, which is a Camassa-Holm type equation with cubic nonlinearities. Specifically, we investigate the L2(R)-spectrum of the associated linearized operator, which in this case is an integro-differential operator with periodic coefficients, in a neighborhood of the origin in the spectral plane. Our analysis shows that such small-amplitude periodic solutions are spectrally unstable to long-wavelength perturbations if the wave number is greater than a critical value, bearing out the famous Benmajin-Feir instability for the Novikov equation. On the other hand, such waves with wave number less than the critical value are shown to be spectrally stable. Our methods are based on applying spectral perturbation theory to the associated linearization.

Nonlinear modulational dynamics of spectrally stable Lugiato–Lefever periodic waves
We consider the nonlinear stability of spectrally stable periodic waves in the Lugiato–Lefever equation (LLE), a damped nonlinear Schrödinger equation with forcing that arises in nonlinearoptics. So far, nonlinear stability of such solutions has only been established against co-periodicperturbations by exploiting the existence of a spectral gap. In this paper, we consider perturbationswhich are localized, i.e., integrable on the line. Such localized perturbations naturally yieldthe absence of a spectral gap, so we must rely on a substantially different method with origins inthe stability analysis of periodic waves in reaction–diffusion systems. The relevant linear estimateshave been obtained in recent work by the first three authors through a delicate decomposition of theassociated linearized solution operator. Since its most critical part just decays diffusively, the nonlineariteration can only be closed if one allows for a spatio-temporal phase modulation. However, the modulated perturbation satisfies a quasilinear equation yielding an apparent loss of regularity. To overcome this obstacle, we incorporate tame estimates on the unmodulated perturbation, whichsatisfies a semilinear equation in which no derivatives are lost, yet where decay is too slow to closean independent iteration scheme. We obtain nonlinear stability of periodic steady waves in the LLEagainst localized perturbations with precisely the same decay rates as predicted by the linear theory.

Recent focus has been given to nonlinear periodic structures for their ability to filter, guide, and block elastic and acoustic waves as a function of their amplitude. In particular, two-dimensional (2-D) nonlinear structures possess amplitude-dependent directional bandgaps. However, little attention has been given to the stability of plane waves along different directions in these structures. This study analyzes a 2-D monoatomic shear lattice composed of discrete masses, linear springs, quadratic and cubic nonlinear springs, and linear viscous dampers. A local stability analysis informed by perturbation results retained through the second order suggests that different directions become unstable at different amplitudes in an otherwise symmetrical lattice. Simulations of the lattice’s equation of motion subjected to both line and point forcing are consistent with the local stability results: waves with large amplitudes have spectral growth that differs appreciably at different angles. The results of this analysis could have implications for encryption strategies and damage detection.more » « less

We consider the codimension one asymptotic stability problem for the soliton of the focusing cubic Klein-Gordon equation on the line under even perturbations. The main obstruction to full asymptotic stability on the center-stable manifold is a small divisor in a quadratic source term of the perturbation equation. This singularity is due to the threshold resonance of the linearized operator and the absence of null structure in the nonlinearity. The threshold resonance of the linearized operator produces a one-dimensional space of slowly decaying Klein-Gordon waves, relative to local norms. In contrast, the closely related perturbation equation for the sine-Gordon kink does exhibit null structure, which makes the corresponding quadratic source term amenable to normal forms (see Lührmann and Schlag [Duke Math. J. 172 (2023), pp. 2715–2820]). The main result of this work establishes decay estimates up to exponential time scales for small “codimension one type” perturbations of the soliton of the focusing cubic Klein-Gordon equation. The proof is based upon a super-symmetric approach to the study of modified scattering for 1D nonlinear Klein-Gordon equations with Pöschl-Teller potentials from Lührmann and Schlag [Duke Math. J. 172 (2023), pp. 2715–2820], and an implementation of a version of an adapted functional framework introduced by Germain and Pusateri [Forum Math. Pi 10 (2022), p. 172].more » « less

This paper is concerned with the stability of periodic traveling waves of dnoidal type, of the Zakharov system. This problem was considered in a study of Angulo and Brango [Nonlinearity 24, 2913 (2011)]. In particular, it was shown that under a technical condition on the perturbation, such waves are orbitally stable, with respect to perturbations of the same period. Our main result fills up the gap created by the aforementioned technical condition. More precisely, we show that for all natural values of the parameters, the periodic dnoidal waves are spectrally stable.more » « less

This paper introduces some of the basic mechanisms relating the behavior of the spectral measure of Schrödinger operators near zero energy to the long-term decay and dispersion of the associated Schrödinger and wave evolutions. These principles are illustrated by means of the author’s work on decay of Schrödinger and wave equations under various types of perturbations, including those of the underlying metric. In particular, we consider local decay of solutions to the linear Schrödinger and wave equations on curved backgrounds that exhibit trapping. A particular application is waves on a Schwarzschild black hole spacetime. We elaborate on Price’s law of local decay that accelerates with the angular momentum, which has recently been settled by Hintz, also in the much more difficult Kerr black hole setting. While the author’s work on the same topic was conducted ten years ago, the global semiclassical representation techniques developed there have recently been applied by Krieger, Miao, and the author to the nonlinear problem of stability of blowup solutions to critical wave maps under non-equivariant perturbations.more » « less
