Internet of Things (IoT) frameworks are designed to facilitate provisioning and secure operation of IoT devices. A typical IoT framework consists of various software layers and components including third-party libraries, communication protocol stacks, the Hardware Abstraction Layer (HAL), the kernel, and the apps. IoT frameworks have implicit data flows in addition to explicit data flows due to their event-driven nature. In this paper, we present a static taint tracking framework, IFLOW, that facilitates the security analysis of system code by enabling specification of data-flow queries that can refer to a variety of software entities. We have formulated various security relevant data-flow queries and solved them using IFLOW to analyze the security of several popular IoT frameworks: Amazon FreeRTOS SDK, SmartThings SDK, and Google IoT SDK. Our results show that IFLOW can both detect real bugs and localize security analysis to the relevant components of IoT frameworks.

Ruis, Andrew R.; Lee, Seung B. (Ed.)While there has been much growth in the use of microblogging platforms (e.g., Twitter) to share information on a range of topics, researchers struggle to analyze the large volumes of data produced on such platforms. Established methods such as Sentiment Analysis (SA) have been criticized over their inaccuracy and limited analytical depth. In this exploratory methodological paper, we propose a combination of SA with Epistemic Network Analysis (ENA) as an alternative approach for providing richer qualitative and quantitative insights into Twitter discourse. We illustrate the application and potential use of these approaches by visualizing the differences between tweets directed or discussing Democrats and Republicans after the COVID-19 Stimulus Package announcement in the US. SA was integrated into ENA models in two ways: as a part of the blocking variable and as a set of codes. Our results suggest that incorporating SA into ENA allowed for a better understanding of how groups viewed the components of the stimulus issue by splitting them by sentiment and enabled a meaningful inclusion of data with singular subject focus into the ENA models.more » « less

Topological data analysis (TDA) has proven to be a potent approach for extracting intricate topological structures from complex and high-dimensional data. In this paper, we propose a TDA-based processing pipeline for analyzing multi-channel scalp EEG data. The pipeline starts with extracting both frequency and temporal information from the signals via the Hilbert–Huang Transform. The sequences of instantaneous frequency and instantaneous amplitude across all electrode channels are treated as approximations of curves in the high-dimensional space. TDA features, which represent the local topological structure of the curves, are further extracted and used in the classification models. Three sets of scalp EEG data, including one collected in a lab and two Brain–computer Interface (BCI) competition data, were used to validate the proposed methods, and compare with other state-of-art TDA methods. The proposed TDA-based approach shows superior performance and outperform the winner of the BCI competition. Besides BCI, the proposed method can also be applied to spatial and temporal data in other domains such as computer vision, remote sensing, and medical imaging.more » « less

Metagenomics has revolutionized our understanding of microbial communities, offering unprecedented insights into their genetic and functional diversity across Earth’s diverse ecosystems. Beyond their roles as environmental constituents, microbiomes act as symbionts, profoundly influencing the health and function of their host organisms. Given the inherent complexity of these communities and the diverse environments where they reside, the components of a metagenomics study must be carefully tailored to yield accurate results that are representative of the populations of interest. This Primer examines the methodological advancements and current practices that have shaped the field, from initial stages of sample collection and DNA extraction to the advanced bioinformatics tools employed for data analysis, with a particular focus on the profound impact of next-generation sequencing on the scale and accuracy of metagenomics studies. We critically assess the challenges and limitations inherent in metagenomics experimentation, available technologies and computational analysis methods. Beyond technical methodologies, we explore the application of metagenomics across various domains, including human health, agriculture and environmental monitoring. Looking ahead, we advocate for the development of more robust computational frameworks and enhanced interdisciplinary collaborations. This Primer serves as a comprehensive guide for advancing the precision and applicability of metagenomic studies, positioning them to address the complexities of microbial ecology and their broader implications for human health and environmental sustainability.more » « less
