Compositional diversity and intriguing structural features have made Zintl phases excellent candidates as thermoelectric materials. Zintl phase with 21-4-18 composition has shown high thermoelectric performance in the mid- to high-temperature ranges. The complex crystal structure and favorable transport properties of these compounds indicate the potential for high thermoelectric efficiency. Arsenic-based Eu21Zn4As18, belonging to the Ca21Mn4Sb18 structure type, exhibits a semiconductor-like p-type transport behavior and has a calculated band gap of 0.49 eV. The compound is paramagnetic at high temperatures, with an antiferromagnetic transition occurring at T-N = similar to 10 K. The moment obtained from the Curie-Weiss data fit aligns with Eu2+ ions. At the same time, the field-dependent measurement at 2 K indicates complex magnetic ordering with a saturation moment consistent with Eu2+ ions. Pristine Eu21Zn4As18 exhibits an ultralow lattice thermal conductivity of 0.40 W m(-1) K-1 at 873 K. Electronic transport properties measurement shows evidence of bipolar conduction across much of the measured temperature range (450-780 K). However, the Seebeck coefficient remains extremely high (>440 mu V K-1) across this range, indicating the potential for high zT if an appropriate dopant is found. This work represents the first report on the temperature-dependent thermal conductivity, Seebeck coefficient, and thermoelectric efficiency of the arsenic-containing Zintl phase with 21-4-18 composition, showcasing its promise for further optimization of the thermoelectric performance.

Synthesis, Structure, and Properties of the Complex Zintl Phase Eu9Zn4.5As9: A Candidate Topological Insulator and Thermoelectric Material
Reported are the synthesis and detailed analysis of the crystal and electronic structure of the novel Zintl phase Eu9Zn4.5As9. This material was identified in the densely populated Eu–Zn–As compositional space. For structure determination and for property measurements, suitable single crystals of this compound were grown from either Sn- or Pb-flux. Single-crystal X-ray diffraction methods indicate that Eu9Zn4.5As9 crystallizes in the orthorhombic crystal system with the space group Pnma (a = 12.1953(7) Å, b = 4.3730(2) Å, c = 42.674(2) Å) and is formally isostructural to Ca9Mn4+xSb9, the less common “9–4–9” type. The structure is heavily disordered, with multiple partially occupied sites, yet, according to the Zintl-Klemm formalism, a charge-balanced composition (Eu2+)9(Zn2+)4.5(As3−)9 is attained. Electronic structure calculations for a model, disorder-free structure indicate no energy gap between the valence and the conduction bands and suggest (semi)metallic behavior. Preliminary susceptibility measurements confirm the expected divalent nature of Eu2+ ([Xe] 4f7 ground state).

A new niobium-doped inorganic scintillating oxyfluoride, Rb4Ge5O9F6:Nb, was synthesized in single crystal form by high-temperature flux growth. The host structure, Rb4Ge5O9F6, crystallizes in the orthorhombic space group Pbcn with lattice parameters a = 6.98430(10) Å, b = 11.7265(2) Å, and c = 19.2732(3) Å, consisting of germanium oxyfluoride layers made up of Ge3O9 units connected by GeO3F3 octahedra. In its pure form, Rb4Ge5O9F6 shows neither luminescence nor scintillation but when doped with niobium, Rb4Ge5O9F6:Nb exhibits bright blue luminescence and scintillation. The isostructural doped structure, Rb4Ge5O9F6:Nb, crystallizes in the orthorhombic space group Pbcn with lattice parameters a = 6.9960(3) Å, b = 11.7464(6) Å, and c = 19.3341(9) Å. X-ray absorption near edge structure (XANES) and extended X-ray absorption fine structure (EXAFS) measurements suggest that the niobium is located in an octahedral coordination environment. Optical measurements inform us that the niobium dopant acts as the activator. The synthesis, structure, and optical properties are reported, including radioluminescence (RL) measurements under X-ray irradiation.more » « less

null (Ed.)A rare-earth-containing compound, ytterbium aluminium antimonide, Yb 3 AlSb 3 (Ca 3 AlAs 3 -type structure), has been successfully synthesized within the Yb–Al–Sb system through flux methods. According to the Zintl formalism, this structure is nominally made up of (Yb 2+ ) 3 [(Al 1− )( 1b – Sb 2− ) 2 ( 2b – Sb 1− )], where 1b and 2b indicate 1-bonded and 2-bonded, respectively, and Al is treated as part of the covalent anionic network. The crystal structure features infinite corner-sharing AlSb 4 tetrahedra, [AlSb 2 Sb 2/2 ] 6− , with Yb 2+ cations residing between the tetrahedra to provide charge balance. Herein, the synthetic conditions, the crystal structure determined from single-crystal X-ray diffraction data, and electronic structure calculations are reported.more » « less

Single crystals of a new transition metal adelite-descloizite-type structure were synthesized using a high temperature (580 °C) high-pressure hydrothermal technique. Single crystal X-ray diffraction and energy dispersive X-ray analysis (EDX) were used to investigate the structure and elemental composition, respectively. SrNi(VO4)(OH) crystallizes in an acentric orthorhombic crystal system in the space group P212121 (no. 19); Z = 4, a = 5.9952(4) Å, b = 7.5844(4) Å, c = 9.2240(5) Å. The structure is comprised of a Ni–O–V framework where Sr2+ ions reside inside the channels. Single-crystal magnetic measurements display a significant anisotropy in both temperature- and field-dependent data. The temperature dependent magnetic measurement shows antiferromagnetic behavior at TN~8 K. Overall, the magnetic properties indicate the presence of competing antiferromagnetic and ferromagnetic interactions of SrNi(VO4)(OH).more » « less

Single crystals of a new ternary chalcogenide Cu3InSe4 were obtained by induction melting, allowing for a complete investigation of the crystal structure by employing high-resolution single-crystal synchrotron X-ray diffraction. Cu3InSe4 crystallizes in a cubic structure, space group P4¯3m, with lattice constant 5.7504(2) Å and a density of 5.426 g/cm3. There are three unique crystallographic sites in the unit cell, with each cation bonded to four Se atoms in a tetrahedral geometry. Electron localization function calculations were employed in investigating the chemical bonding nature and first-principle electronic structure calculations are also presented. The results are discussed in light of the ongoing interest in exploring the structural and electronic properties of new chalcogenide materials.more » « less
