Abstract Cadmium is laser-cooled and trapped with excitations to triplet states with UVA light, first using only the 67 kHz wide 326 nm intercombination line and subsequently, for large loading rates, the 25 MHz wide 361 nm3P2→3D3transition. Eschewing the hard UV 229 nm1S0→1P1transition, only small magnetic fields gradients, less than 6 G cm−1, are required enabling a 100% transfer of atoms from the 361 nm trap to the 326 nm narrow-line trap. All 8 stable cadmium isotopes are straightforwardly trapped, including two nuclear-spin- fermions that require no additional repumping. We observe evidence of3P2collisions limiting the number of trapped metastable atoms, report isotope shifts for111Cd and113Cd of the 326 nm1S0→3P1, 480nm3P1→3S1, and 361 nm3P2→3D3transitions, and measure the114Cd 5s5p3P2→ 5s5d3D3transition frequency to be 830 096 573(15) MHz.

1,4-Bromoboration of nitroalkenes
The selective 1,4-bromoboration of nitroalkenes occurs under mild conditions with a bromoborane featuring two 1-methyl-ortho-carborane substituents, BrBMeoCb2.

Abstract Reactions oftrans‐[Rh(CO)(Cl){P{(CH2)14}3P2(Rh–P2)}] (1) with ZnPh2, MeLi, or NaBH4give the chloride‐substitution productstrans‐[Rh(CO)(Ph){P{(CH2)14}3P2(Rh–P2)}] (3, 89 %),trans‐[Rh(CO)(Me){P{(CH2)14}3P2(Rh–P2)}] (94 %, 92 % purity), andtrans‐[Rh(CO)(H2BH2){P{(CH2)14}3P2(Rh–P2)}] (5, 99 %). The crystal structures of3,5, and the corresponding (fortuitously obtained) bromide complex are determined, and the ability of the X–Rh–CO moieties to rotate is interpreted in terms of their effective radii and the void space within the dibridgehead diphosphine cage. Reaction of1and excess PMe3gives the diphosphine substitution producttrans‐[Rh(CO)(Cl)(PMe3)2] (89 %) and the dibridgehead diphosphine P[(CH2)14]3P (58 %). Complex5serves as a catalyst precursor for the hydroformylation of 1‐octene (neat or THF, 60 °C, 75 psig 1:1 CO/H2). The locus of catalysis with respect to the diphosphine cage is discussed.more » « less

Abstract We consider the combined effects that overshooting and the12C(α,γ)16O reaction rate have on variable white dwarf (WD) stellar models. We find that carbon–oxygen (CO) WD models continue to yield pulsation signatures of the current experimental12C(α,γ)16O reaction rate probability distribution function when overshooting is included in the evolution. These signatures hold because the resonating mantle region, encompassing ≃0.2M⊙in a typical ≃0.6M⊙WD model, still undergoes radiative helium burning during the evolution to a WD. Our specific models show two potential low-order adiabatic g-modes,g2andg6, that signalize the12C(α,γ)16O reaction rate probability distribution function. Both g-mode signatures induce average relative period shifts of ΔP/P= 0.44% and ΔP/P= 1.33% forg2andg6, respectively. We find thatg6is a trapped mode, and theg2period signature is inversely proportional to the12C(α,γ)16O reaction rate. Theg6period signature generally separates the slower and faster reaction rates, and has a maximum relative period shift of ΔP/P= 3.45%. We conclude that low-order g-mode periods from CO WDs may still serve as viable probes for the12C(α,γ)16O reaction rate probability distribution function when overshooting is included in the evolution.more » « less

Context. Carbon monoxide (CO) is a poor tracer of H2in the diffuse interstellar medium (ISM), where most of the carbon is not incorporated into CO molecules, unlike the situation at higher extinctions. Aims. We present a novel, indirect method for constraining H2column densities (NH2) without employing CO observations. We show that previously recognized nonlinearities in the relation between the extinction,AV(H2), derived from dust emission and the H Icolumn density (NH I) are due to the presence of molecular gas. Methods. We employed archival (NH2) data, obtained from the UV spectra of stars, and calculatedAV(H2) toward these sight lines using 3D extinction maps. The following relation fits the data: logNH2= 1.38742 (logAV(H2))3− 0.05359 (logAV(H2))2+ 0.25722 logAV(H2) + 20.67191. This relation is useful for constrainingNH2in the diffuse ISM as it requires onlyNH Iand dust extinction data, which are both easily accessible. In 95% of the cases, the estimates produced by the fitted equation have deviations of less than a factor of 3.5. We constructed aNH2map of our Galaxy and compared it to the CO integrated intensity (WCO) distribution. Results. We find that the average ratio (XCO) betweenNH2andWCOis approximately equal to 2 × 1020cm−2(K km s−1)−1, consistent with previous estimates. However, we find that theXCOfactor varies by orders of magnitude on arcminute scales between the outer and the central portions of molecular clouds. For regions withNH2≳ 1020cm−2, we estimate that the average H2fractional abundance,fH2= 2NH2/(2NH2+NH I), is 0.25. Multiple (distinct) largely atomic clouds are likely found along high-extinction sightlines (AV≥ 1 mag), hence limitingfH2in these directions. Conclusions. More than 50% of the lines of sight withNH2≥ 1020cm−2are untraceable by CO with aJ= 1−0 sensitivity limitWCO= 1 K km s−1.more » « less

Aims.We analyze the anomalies appearing in the light curves of the three microlensing events MOA-2022-BLG-563, KMT-2023-BLG-0469, and KMT-2023-BLG-0735. The anomalies exhibit common short-term dip features that appear near the peak. Methods. From the detailed analyses of the light curves, we find that the anomalies were produced by planets accompanied by the lenses of the events. For all three events, the estimated mass ratios between the planet and host are on the order of 10−4:q ~8 × 10−4for MOA-2022-BLG-563L,q~ 2.5 × 10−4for KMT-2023-BLG-0469L, andq~ 1.9 × 10−4for KMT-2023-BLG-0735L. The interpretations of the anomalies are subject to a common inner-outer degeneracy, which causes ambiguity when estimating the projected planet-host separation. Results. We estimated the planet mass,Mp, host mass,Mh, and distance,DL, to the planetary system by conducting Bayesian analyses using the observables of the events. The estimated physical parameters of the planetary systems are (Mh/M⊙,Mp/MJ,DL/kpc) = (0.48−0.30+0.36, 0.40−0.25+0.31, 6.53−1.57+1.12) for MOA-2022-BLG-563L, (0.47−0.26+0.35, 0.124−0.067+0.092, 7.07−1.19+1.03) for KMT-2023-BLG-0469L, and (0.62−0.35+0.34, 0.125−0.070+0.068, 6.26−1.67+1.27) for KMT-2023-BLG-0735L. According to the estimated parameters, all planets are cold planets with projected separations that are greater than the snow lines of the planetary systems, they have masses that lie between the masses of Uranus and Jupiter of the Solar System, and the hosts of the planets are main-sequence stars that are less massive than the Sun. In all cases, the planetary systems are more likely to be in the bulge with probabilitiesPbulge= 64%, 73%, and 56% for MOA-2022-BLG-563, KMT-2023-BLG-0469, and KMT-2023-BLG-0735, respectively.more » « less
