Title: Caribou-Poker Creeks Research Watershed (Alaska) Pulse-Amplitude Modulation Fluorometry Needle-Scale Observations (March 2022 - July 2024)
This dataset consists of pulse-amplitude modulation (PAM) fluorometry data collected using six Micro-PAM (Walz GmbH, Effeltrich, Germany) measurement heads installed on two black spruce trees at the Caribou-Poker Creeks Research Watershed National Ecological Observatory Network (NEON) site (site abbreviation: BONA) near Fairbanks, Alaska. These measurements provide information on the physiological status of photosystem II and photosynthesis more broadly for the needles and trees observed. Three PAM measurement heads were installed on each tree at low, intermediate, and high heights qualitatively within the canopy. Five measurement heads (second intermediate position measurement excluded) were installed in March 2022, with the sixth measurement head being installed in July 2022. Data was collected semi-continuously, including the harsh winter season, until July 2024. PAM fluorescence measurements were collected in a ramped scheme centered around noon to maximize measurement frequency while still allowing for adequate dark acclimation for the nighttime measurement. Saturation pulses were performed by each measuring head every fifteen minutes from 9:00AM – 5:00PM, every thirty minutes from 7:00AM-9:00AM and 5:00PM-7:00PM, and every hour from 2:00AM-7:00AM and 7:00PM-9:00PM.  more » « less

  1. {"Abstract":["This data set contains soil temperature, soil moisture, and soil conductivity data in the vicinity of Palmer Station. TEROS12 sensors are installed in 40 plots that are distributed along an increasing primary productivity gradient (i.e., with increasing distance from the Marr Ice Piedmont glacier). The sensors are comprised of 5 cm long metal pins that are inserted straight down into the soil and hence, data are collected from the upper 0-5 cm of the soil. There are 4 sites along the gradient (site 1 is closest to the glacier and site 4 is farthest from the glacier), with ten plots at each site. Half of the plots at each site are plots that contain an open-top chamber and the other half of the plots are control (unwarmed) plots. Plot ids will contain "W" for warmed plots and "C" for control plots. Raw data from the loggers (logged every 20 minutes), as well as an R Markdown file is provided to facilitate reading in and displaying the daily average soil moisture and temperature data at the plot and at the treatment level for each productivity site.   2. This dataset contains dissolved organic carbon concentrations from surface water samples collected at 100 urban stream and canal locations in the greater Miami, Florida metropolitan area. Samples were collected five times across different seasons to capture spatial and seasonal variation in DOC concentration. These events include the wet seasons of 2021 and 2022, as well as the dry season of 2022, specifically: Summer 2021 (Wet; July 8 to July 27), Fall 2021 (Wet; September 27 to October 7), Winter 2022 (Dry; January 3 to January 13), Spring 2022 (Dry; April 7 to April 23), and Summer 2022 (Wet; June 1 to June 13). These data were collected as part of the Carbon in Urban Rivers Biogeochemistry (CURB) Project. Detailed field data and site data are published separately and can be linked using the “curbid” and “synoptic_event” columns in each dataset.

  3. This dataset contains field measurements taken during water sampling from 100 urban stream locations in the greater Miami, Florida metropolitan area. Field collection took place during five synoptic sampling events: Summer 2021 (Wet; July 8 to July 27), Fall 2021 (Wet; September 27 to October 7), Winter 2022 (Dry; January 3 to January 13), Spring 2022 (Dry; April 7 to April 23), and Summer 2022 (Wet; June 1 to June 13) to capture spatial and seasonal variation in stream conditions (specific conductivity, water temperature, dissolved oxygen, pH). Filtered stream samples were analyzed for dissolved organic carbon concentration and characteristics, available in a separate dataset. These data were collected as part of the Carbon in Urban Rivers Biogeochemistry (CURB) Project. Detailed field data and site data are published separately and can be linked using the “curbid” and “synoptic_event” columns in each dataset.

  4. {"Abstract":["Three distinct reaches in McRae Creek west tributary (MCTW) within the HJ Andrews Experimental Forest in western Oregon were designated for manipulation and data collection. Manipulations included increasing the temperature (T), reducing streamflow (Q), and a reference (R reach). Population estimates of vertebrates, specifically Coastal Cutthroat Trout and Coastal Giant Salamander, were obtained using three-pass depletion methods in each reach. A Before-After-Control-Impact (BACI) design was implemented, distinguishing between the "Before" and "After" periods. "Before" surveys were conducted from July 18th to 20th, 2022, while "After" surveys occurred from September 8th to 9th, 2022. During the surveys, each species was identified, noting life stage, and relevant measurements were taken. For trout, these included the length from the snout to the tail fork (Length_Fork_Vent), the snout to the tail (Length_Tail), and weight. In the "Before" survey, all trout were tagged with elastomer tags: red for the T reach, yellow for the Q reach, and orange for the R reach. Trout larger than 80 mm also received PIT tags in their abdominal cavities. Salamanders were measured similarly, not elastomer or PIT tags were applied. During the "After" survey, no new elastomer or PIT tags were inserted; only previously tagged fish were recorded. Additionally, stream cross-sections were surveyed every 5 meters to document stream dimensions. Recorded data included the location, reach, sample date, BACI status, and distance downstream from the upstream cross-section (0 meters). Measurements at each cross-section included wetted width, bankfull width, and depths at five evenly spaced points. Furthermore, pools were identified and measured in each reach, noting the maximum pool depth, depth at the outflow, width, and length. Temperature sensors were installed in each reach, recording stream temperature every 15 minutes. Sensor locations were recorded as the distance downstream from the top of each reach."]}

This dataset consists of tower-based remote sensing measurements collected using a pair of Fluospec2 (FS2; Yang et al., 2018) instruments, each consisting of two QEPro spectrometers (Ocean Optics, Orlando, USA), installed at the Caribou-Poker Creeks Research Watershed National Ecological Observatory Network (NEON) site (site abbreviation: BONA) near Fairbanks, Alaska. Remote sensing observations include solar-induced fluorescence, derived via a spectral fitting method, near-infrared reflectance of vegetation, and several vegetation indices that can collectively be used to evaluate canopy productivity, photosynthetic phenology, and physiology. Data was collected from two subsites, one FS2 (frequency-synthesizer) instrument installed at each site, located roughly one kilometer apart along a topographic gradient. The evergreen site consists of a black spruce canopy and a lichen and moss understory, with a few larch trees interspersed. The FS2 instrument here was installed on an observation tower (latitude/longitude: 65.15401/-147.50258) installed by NEON that also hosts NEON's meteorological and flux instruments, with the FS2 instrument observing a cluster of black spruce (Picea mariana) trees. At the deciduous site (latitude and longitude: 65.15686833, -147.50367667), a mast was installed within a deciduous canopy consisting of alaskan paper birch (Betula neoalaskana), black spruce, and quaking aspen (Populus tremuloides) trees located roughly one kilometer (km) uphill from the evergreen site. The FS2 instrument installed here observed a paper birch tree located near-nadir from the instrument.
