We consider planar directed last-passage percolation on the square lattice with general i.i.d. weights and study the geometry of the full set of semi-infinite geodesics in a typical realization of the random environment. The structure of the geodesics is studied through the properties of the Busemann functions viewed as a stochastic process indexed by the asymptotic direction. Our results are further connected to the ergodic program for and stability properties of random Hamilton–Jacobi equations. In the exactly solvable exponential model, our results specialize to give the first complete characterization of the uniqueness and coalescence structure of the entire family of semi-infinite geodesics for any model of this type. Furthermore, we compute statistics of locations of instability, where we discover an unexpected connection to simple symmetric random walk.

Anomalous Geodesics in the Inhomogeneous Corner Growth Model
Abstract We study Busemann functions, semi-infinite geodesics, and competition interfaces in the exactly solvable last-passage percolation with inhomogeneous exponential weights. New phenomena concerning geodesics arise due to inhomogeneity. These include novel Busemann functions associated with flat regions of the limit shape and thin rectangles, semi-infinite geodesics with intervals of asymptotic directions, non-trivial axis-directed geodesics, intervals with no geodesic directions, and isolated geodesic directions. We further observe a new dichotomy for competition interfaces and second-class customers in a series of memoryless continuous-time queues with inhomogeneous service rates: a second-class customer either becomes trapped or proceeds through the service stations at strictly positive speed.

The Sharpened Distance Conjecture and Tower Scalar Weak Gravity Conjecture are closely related but distinct conjectures, neither one implying the other. Motivated by examples, I propose that both are consequences of two new conjectures: 1. The infinite distance geodesics passing through an arbitrary point ϕ in the moduli space populate a dense set of directions in the tangent space at ϕ. 2. Along any infinite distance geodesic, there exists a tower of particles whose scalar-charge-to-mass ratio (–∇log m) projection everywhere along the geodesic is greater than or equal to 1/√(d-2). I perform several nontrivial tests of these new conjectures in maximal and half-maximal supergravity examples. I also use the Tower Scalar Weak Gravity Conjecture to conjecture a sharp bound on exponentially heavy towers that accompany infinite distance limits.more » « less

Abstract We show convergence of small eigenvalues for geometrically finite hyperbolicn-manifolds under strong limits. For a class of convergent convex sets in a strongly convergent sequence of Kleinian groups, we use the spectral gap of the limit manifold and the exponentially mixing property of the geodesic flow along the strongly convergent sequence to find asymptotically uniform counting formulas for the number of orthogeodesics between the convex sets. In particular, this provides asymptotically uniform counting formulas (with respect to length) for orthogeodesics between converging Margulis tubes, geodesic loops based at converging basepoints, and primitive closed geodesics.more » « less

Abstract We prove prime geodesic theorems counting primitive closed geodesics on a compact hyperbolic 3-manifold with length and holonomy in prescribed intervals, which are allowed to shrink. Our results imply effective equidistribution of holonomy and have both the rate of shrinking and the strength of the error term fully symmetric in length and holonomy.more » « less

A well-known question in planar first-passage percolation concerns the convergence of the empirical distribution of weights as seen along geodesics. We demonstrate this convergence for an explicit model, directed last-passage percolation on\mathbb{Z}^{2}with i.i.d. exponential weights, and provide explicit formulae for the limiting distributions, which depend on the asymptotic direction. For example, for geodesics in the direction of the diagonal, the limiting weight distribution has density(1/4+x/2+x^{2}/8)e^{-x}, and so is a mixture of Gamma(1,1), Gamma(2,1), and Gamma(3,1) distributions with weights1/4,1/2, and1/4respectively. More generally, we study the local environment as seen from vertices along geodesics (including information about the shape of the path and about the weights on and off the path in a local neighborhood). We consider finite geodesics from(0,0)ton\boldsymbol{\rho}for some vector\boldsymbol{\rho}in the first quadrant, in the limit asn\to\infty, as well as semi-infinite geodesics in direction\boldsymbol{\rho}. We show almost sure convergence of the empirical distributions of the environments along these geodesics, as well as convergence of the distributions of the environment around a typical point in these geodesics, to the same limiting distribution, for which we give an explicit description. We make extensive use of a correspondence with TASEP as seen from an isolated second-class particle for which we prove new results concerning ergodicity and convergence to equilibrium. Our analysis relies on geometric arguments involving estimates for last-passage times, available from the integrable probability literature.more » « less
