Title: Astrochemistry prefers the biomolecule: isomer-selective production of ethanolamine (HOCH 2 CH 2 NH 2 ) in interstellar model ices
Model interstellar ices composed of methanol and methylamine are found to efficiently and selectively produce ethanolamine (HOCH2CH2NH2) without side reactions leading to its isomers. Credit: NASA/ESA/CSA.  more » « less

  1. Abstract Coordination complexes of general formulatrans‐[MX2(R2ECH2CH2ER2)2] (MII=Ti, V, Cr, Mn; E=N or P; R=alkyl or aryl) are a cornerstone of coordination and organometallic chemistry. We investigate the electronic properties of two such complexes,trans‐[VCl2(tmeda)2] andtrans‐[VCl2(dmpe)2], which thus representtrans‐[MX2(R2ECH2CH2ER2)2] where M=V, X=Cl, R=Me and E=N (tmeda) and P (dmpe). These VIIcomplexes haveS=3/2 ground states, as expected for octahedral d3. Their tetragonal distortion leads to zero‐field splitting (zfs) that is modest in magnitude (D≈0.3 cm−1) relative to analogousS=1 TiIIand CrIIcomplexes. This parameter was determined from conventional EPR spectroscopy, but more effectively from high‐frequency and ‐field EPR (HFEPR) that determined the sign ofDas negative for the diamine complex, but positive for the diphosphine, which information had not been known for anytrans‐[VX2(R2ECH2CH2ER2)2] systems. The ligand‐field parameters oftrans‐[VCl2(tmeda)2] andtrans‐[VCl2(dmpe)2] are obtained using both classical theory andab initioquantum chemical theory. The results shed light not only on the electronic structure of VIIin this environment, but also on differences between N and P donor ligands, a key comparison in coordination chemistry.

  2. The crystal structure of the title compound, hexaaquanickel(II) dichloride–1,4,7,10,13,16-hexaoxacyclooctadecane–water (1/2/2), [Ni(H2O)6]Cl2·2C12H24O6·2H2O, is reported. The asymmetric unit contains half of the Ni(OH2)6moiety with a formula of C12H32ClNi0.50O10at 105 K and triclinic (P1) symmetry. The [Ni(OH2)6]2+cation has close to ideal octahedral geometry with O—Ni—O bond angles that are within 3° of idealized values. The supramolecular structure includes hydrogen bonding between the water ligands, 18-crown-6 molecules, Cl−anions, and co-crystallized water solvent. Two crown ether molecules flank the [Ni(OH2)6]2+molecule at the axial positions in a sandwich-like structure. The relatively symmetric hydrogen-bonding network is enabled by small Cl−counter-ions and likely influences the more idealized octahedral geometry of [Ni(OH2)6]2+.

  4. Abstract Organofunctionalized tetranuclear clusters [(MIICl)2(VIVO)2{((HOCH2CH2)(H)N(CH2CH2O))(HN(CH2CH2O)2)}2] (1, M=Co,2: M=Zn) containing an unprecedented oxometallacyclic {M2V2Cl2N4O8} (M=Co, Zn) framework have been prepared by solvothermal reactions. The new oxo‐alkoxide compounds were fully characterized by spectroscopic methods, magnetic susceptibility measurement, DFT and ab initio computational methods, and complete single‐crystal X‐ray diffraction structure analysis. The isostructural clusters are formed of edge‐sharing octahedral {VO5N} and trigonal bipyramidal {MO3NCl} units. Diethanolamine ligates the bimetallic lacunary double cubane core of1and2in an unusual two‐mode fashion, unobserved previously. In the crystalline state, the clusters of1and2are joined by hydrogen bonds to form a three‐dimensional network structure. Magnetic susceptibility data indicate weakly antiferromagnetic interactions between the vanadium centers [Jiso(VIV−VIV)=−5.4(1); −3.9(2) cm−1], and inequivalent antiferromagnetic interactions between the cobalt and vanadium centers [Jiso(VIV−CoII)=−12.6 and −7.5 cm−1] contained in1.

  5. CaF2, BaF2, and MgF2are low-index, infrared-transparent materials that are extensively used in optical systems. Despite their technological importance, a systematic investigation into the temperature dependence of their optical properties is lacking. In this study, spectroscopic ellipsometry was used to obtain the refractive index of monocrystalline CaF2, BaF2, and MgF2for wavelengths between 220 nm and 1700 nm, and for temperatures between 21 °C and 368 °C. The raw ellipsometric data was fit to a Sellmeier model with temperature-dependent oscillator terms to extract the real part of the refractive index of each material. The refractive index of CaF2and BaF2was observed to decrease linearly with increasing temperature, which can be largely attributed to a reduction in the mass density due to thermal expansion. In contrast, the refractive index of MgF2was found to vary nonlinearly with temperature, which suggests competing effects from the material’s electronic polarizability. The temperature-dependent refractive index data reported here provide a finely-resolved mapping of the thermo-optic coefficient for these three materials, which could inform the development of optical devices operating at elevated or unsteady temperatures.
