Summary Grasses are exceptionally productive, yet their hydraulic adaptation is paradoxical. Among C3grasses, a high photosynthetic rate (Aarea) may depend on higher vein density (Dv) and hydraulic conductance (Kleaf). However, the higherDvof C4grasses suggests a hydraulic surplus, given their reduced need for highKleafresulting from lower stomatal conductance (gs).Combining hydraulic and photosynthetic physiological data for diverse common garden C3and C4species with data for 332 species from the published literature, and mechanistic modeling, we validated a framework for linkages of photosynthesis with hydraulic transport, anatomy, and adaptation to aridity.C3and C4grasses had similarKleafin our common garden, but C4grasses had higherKleafthan C3species in our meta‐analysis. Variation inKleafdepended on outside‐xylem pathways. C4grasses have highKleaf : gs, which modeling shows is essential to achieve their photosynthetic advantage.Across C3grasses, higherAareawas associated with higherKleaf, and adaptation to aridity, whereas for C4species, adaptation to aridity was associated with higherKleaf : gs. These associations are consistent with adaptation for stress avoidance.Hydraulic traits are a critical element of evolutionary and ecological success in C3and C4grasses and are crucial avenues for crop design and ecological forecasting.

Unveiling the role of oxygen species in surface promoted Fe–Mn oxides for chemical looping oxidative dehydrogenation of ethane
In chemical looping – oxidative dehydrogenation of ethane, tuning the re-oxidation conditions for Na4Mg(WO4)3promoted mixed Fe–Mn oxide can significantly improve the yields towards ethylene and C2+high-value products and reduce the COxformation.

Abstract Radioactive pertechnetate (TcO4−) from the nuclear fuel cycle presents a severe risk to the environment due to its large solubility in water and non‐complexing nature. By utilizing the chaotropic properties of TcO4−and its nonradioactive surrogate perrhenate (ReO4−) and the principle of chaotropic interactions, a series of quaternary ammonium‐containing polyelectrolyte brush‐grafted silica particles are designed and applied to remove ReO4−from water. These cationic hairy particles (HPs) are synthesized by surface‐initiated atom transfer radical polymerization of 2‐(N,N‐dimethylamino)ethyl methacrylate and subsequent quaternization with various halogen compounds. Dynamic light scattering (DLS) studies showed that the HPs with sufficiently longN‐alkyl andN‐benzyl substituents underwent sharp size reduction transitions in water when titrated with a KReO4solution, indicating strong chaotropic interactions between the brushes and ReO4−. All the HPs exhibited fast adsorption kinetics; the HPs with longerN‐alkyl andN‐benzyl substituents showed higher capabilities of removing ReO4−than those with shorterN‐alkyls. Moreover, the brush particles with longerN‐substituents displayed a significantly stronger ability in selective adsorption of ReO4−than the particles with shorterN‐substituents in the presence of competing anions, such as F−, Cl−, NO3−, and SO42−. This work opens a new avenue to design high‐performance adsorbent materials for TcO4−and ReO4−.more » « less

Bis(triphenylsulfonium) tetrachloridomanganate(II), (C18H15S)2[MnCl4] (I), triphenylsulfonium tetrachloridoferrate(III), (C18H15S)[FeCl4] (II), and bis(triphenylsulfonium) tetrachloridocobaltate(II), (C18H15S)2[CoCl4] (III), crystallize in the monoclinic space groupsP21/n[(I) and (III)] andP21/c[(II)]. Compounds (I) and (III) each contain two crystallographically independent triphenylsulfonium (TPS+) cations in the asymmetric unit, whereas (II) has one. In all three compounds, the sulfonium centers adopt distorted trigonal–pyramidal geometries, with S—C bond lengths falling roughly in the 1.78–1.79 Å range and C—S—C angles observed at about 101 to 106°. The [MCl4]n−anions (M= Mn2+, Fe3+, Co2+;n= 2,1,2) adopt slightly distorted tetrahedral geometries, withM—Cl bond lengths in the 2.19–2.38 Å range and Cl—M—Cl angles of approximately 104–113°. Hirshfeld surface analyses shows that H...H and H...C contacts dominate the TPS+cation environments, whereas H...Cl and shortM—S interactions link each [MCl4]n−anion to the surrounding cations. In (I) and (III), inversion-centered π–π stacking further consolidates the crystal packing, while in (II) no π–π interactions are observed.more » « less

Our understanding of how photosynthetic capacity varies among C4species and across growth and measurement conditions remains limited. We collated 1696 CO2response curves of net CO2assimilation rate (A/Cicurves) from C4species grown and measured at various environmental conditions and used these data to estimate the apparent maximum carboxylation activity of phosphoenolpyruvate carboxylase (VpmaxA) and CO2‐saturated net photosynthetic rate (Amax), two key parameters describing photosynthetic capacity. We examined howVpmaxAandAmaxvary with species‐specific traits, growth and measurement conditions. We found little systematic variation ofVpmaxAandAmaxacross the classical C4biochemical subtypes or growth forms, but showed that growth temperature and measurement conditions are major factors determining C4photosynthetic capacity. We found no evidence that common C4model species (e.g. maize, sorghum andSetaria viridis) differ in photosynthetic capacity from other C4species when grown in controlled environments. However, C4model species showed up to twice the photosynthetic capacity of other C4species when grown in the field. Our multivariate model accounts for 47–51% of the variation reported inVpmaxAandAmax, and we argue that environmental conditions have a greater influence on C4photosynthetic capacity than biochemical subtypes or growth forms.more » « less

Abstract In an effort to reconcile the various interpretations for the cation components of the 2p3/2observed in x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) of several spinel oxide materials, the XPS spectra of both spinel alloy nanoparticles and crystalline thin films are compared. We observed that different components of the 2p3/2core level XPS spectra, of these inverse spinel thin films, are distinctly surface and bulk weighted, indicating surface-to-bulk core level shifts in the binding energies. Surface-to-bulk core level shifts in binding energies of Ni and Fe 2p3/2core levels of NiFe2O4thin film are observed in angle-resolved XPS. The ratio between surface-weighted components and bulk-weighted components of the Ni and Fe core levels shows appreciable dependency on photoemission angle, with respect to surface normal. XPS showed that the ferrite nanoparticles NixCo1−xFe2O4(x= 0.2, 0.5, 0.8, 1) resemble the surface of the NiFe2O4thin film. Surface-to-bulk core level shifts are also observed in CoFe2O4and NiCo2O4thin films but not as significantly as in NiFe2O4thin film. Estimates of surface stoichiometry of some spinel oxide nanoparticles and thin films suggested that the apportionment between cationic species present could be farther from expectations for thin films as compared to what is seen with nanoparticles.more » « less
