Title: Phase-Based Properties of Al-Fe-Ni Samples: Characterization and Computational Framework Toward Compositionally Tailored Properties
This study presents a framework for mapping the effects of composition and phase fractions on the coefficient of thermal expansion (CTE) and elastic properties in the Al-Fe-Ni ternary, using thermodynamic phase calculations, first-principles property calculations, and experimental validation. The calculation of phase diagrams (CALPHAD) method was used to predict phases within the Al-Fe-Ni ternary, and the CTE and elastic constants of the phases were computed using DFT-based calculations, which were used to determine P-wave modulus and wave speed values. For multi-phase compositions, anticipated bulk CTE and P-wave modulus values were calculated using homogenization equations and individual phase properties. Arc-melted samples of compositions within the ternary were fabricated, and their phases, CTE, and wave speeds were measured, showing agreement with predicted phases and property trends. The approach presented in this work can be used towards property-informed design of alloys, joints, and functionally graded materials.  more » « less

  1. Functionally graded materials enable the spatial tailoring of properties through controlling compositions and phases that appear as a function of position within a component. The present study investigates the ability to reduce the coefficient of thermal expansion (CTE) of an aluminum alloy, Al 2219, through additions of Ti-6Al-4V. Thermodynamic simulations were used for phase predictions, and homogenization methods were used for CTE predictions of the bulk CTE of samples spanning compositions between 100 wt% Al 2219 and 70 wt% Al 2219 (balance Ti-6Al-4V) in 10 wt% increments. The samples were fabricated using directed energy deposition (DED) additive manufacturing (AM). Al2Cu and fcc phases were experimentally identified in all samples, and aluminides were shown to form in the samples containing Ti-6Al-4V. Thermomechanical analysis was used to measure the CTE of the samples, which agreed with the predicted CTE values from homogenization methods. The present study demonstrates the ability to tailor the CTEs of samples through compositional modification, thermodynamic calculations, and homogenization methods for property predictions.

  2. The composition dependences of the magnetic and elastic properties of Ni-Mn-Ga Heusleralloys are investigated by using ab initio calculations. The off-stoichiometric compositions are real-ized by the coherent-potential approximation. Two types of off-stoichiometric approaches are pro-posed. Through a series of researches, the equilibrium lattice constants, bulk modulus, magnetic mo-ments, formation energies of Ni-Mn-Ga alloys are obtained and mapped onto ternary diagrams.

  3. The Fe-Nb and Fe-Nb-Ni systems are remodeled using updated sublattice models for the topologically close packed (TCP) phases of Laves_C14, δ and μ with new experimental data and first-principles and phonon calculations based on density functional theory (DFT). Experimental techniques are used to determine phase compositions and tie-lines in the Fe-Nb-Ni system. The three-, three-, and five- sublattice models are used for Laves_C14, δ, and μ phases, respectively. DFT calculations are employed to predict thermochemical data as a function of temperature for Laves_C14, δ, and μ phases. The new thermodynamic description of the Fe-Nb-Ni system includes a new hexagonal phase named - hP24 - and the updates for the Fe-Nb system and reproduces better the experimental and computational thermochemical and phase equilibrium data from the present study and the literature. The new results will improve thermodynamic predictions of TCP and other phases in both Fe-based and Ni-based alloy systems.

  4. A database for the Cr-Ni-V system was constructed by modeling the binary Cr-V and ternary Cr-Ni-V systems using the CALPHAD approach aided by density functional theory (DFT)-based first-principles calculations and ab initio molecular dynamics (AIMD) simulations. To validate this new database, a functionally graded material (FGM) using Ni-20Cr and V was fabricated using directed energy deposition additive manufacturing (DED AM) and experimentally characterized. The deposited Ni-20Cr was pure fcc phase, while increasing V content across the gradient resulted in sigma phase formation, followed by bcc phase formation. The experimentally measured phases were compared with CALPHAD computations made using a Cr-Ni-V thermodynamic database from the literature and the database developed in the present work. The newly developed database was shown to better predict the experimentally observed phases due to its accurate modeling of binary systems within the database and the ternary liquid phase, which is critical for accurate Scheil calculations.

  5. The discovery of ferroelectricity in hafnia based thin films has catalyzed significant research focused on understanding the ferroelectric property origins and means to increase stability of the ferroelectric phase. Prior studies have revealed that biaxial tensile stress via an electrode “capping effect” is a suspected ferroelectric phase stabilization mechanism. This effect is commonly reported to stem from a coefficient of thermal expansion (CTE) incongruency between the hafnia and top electrode. Despite reported correlations between ferroelectric phase fraction and electrode CTE, the thick silicon substrate dominates the mechanics and CTE-related stresses, negating any dominant contribution from an electrode CTE mismatch toward the capping effect. In this work, these discrepancies are reconciled, and the origin of these differences deriving from electrode elastic modulus, not CTE, is demonstrated. Pt/M/TaN/Hf0.5Zr0.5O2/TaN/Si devices, where M is platinum, TaN, iridium, tungsten, and ruthenium, were fabricated. Sin2(ψ)-based X-ray diffraction measurements of biaxial stress in the HZO layer reveal a strong correlation between biaxial stress, remanent polarization, and electrode elastic modulus. Conversely, a low correlation exists between the electrode CTE, HZO biaxial stress, and remanent polarization. A higher elastic modulus enhances the resistance to electrode elastic deformation, which intensifies the capping effect during crystallization, and culminates in the tandem restriction of out-of-plane hafnia volume expansion and preferential orientation of the polar c-axis normal to the plane. These behaviors concomitantly increase the ferroelectric phase stability and polarization magnitude. This work provides electrode material selection guidelines toward the development of high-performing ferroelectric hafnia into microelectronic devices, such as nonvolatile memories.
