Title: Optimal Order Space‐Time Discretization Methods for the Nonlinear Stochastic Elastic Wave Equations With Multiplicative Noise
This paper develops and analyzes an optimal‐order semi‐discrete scheme and its fully discrete finite element approximation for a second‐order system of nonlinear stochastic equations with multiplicative noise, which governs wave propagation in elastic media under the influence of random damping and force. A nonstandard time‐stepping scheme is introduced for time discretization. It is shown that the scheme converges with rates and respectively in the energy‐ and norm, which are optimal with respect to the time regularity of the PDE solution. For spatial discretization, the finite element method is constructed. It is proven that the fully discrete method converges with optimal rates and in the energy‐ and ‐norm. The crux of the analysis is to establish some high‐moment stability results and utilize a refined error estimate for the trapezoidal quadrature rule to control the nonlinearities from the drift term and the multiplicative noise. Numerical experiments are also provided to validate the theoretical results.  more » « less

  1. In this paper we propose and analyze finite element discontinuous Galerkin methods for the one- and two-dimensional stochastic Maxwell equations with multiplicative noise. The discrete energy law of the semi-discrete DG methods were studied. Optimal error estimate of the semi-discrete method is obtained for the one-dimensional case, and the two-dimensional case on both rectangular meshes and triangular meshes under certain mesh assumptions. Strong Taylor 2.0 scheme is used as the temporal discretization. Both one- and two-dimensional numerical results are presented to validate the theoretical analysis results.

Abstract We propose some new mixed finite element methods for the time-dependent stochastic Stokes equations with multiplicative noise, which use the Helmholtz decomposition of the driving multiplicative noise. It is known (Langa, J. A., Real, J. & Simon, J. (2003) Existence and regularity of the pressure for the stochastic Navier--Stokes equations. Appl. Math. Optim., 48, 195--210) that the pressure solution has low regularity, which manifests in suboptimal convergence rates for well-known inf-sup stable mixed finite element methods in numerical simulations; see Feng X., & Qiu, H. (Analysis of fully discrete mixed finite element methods for time-dependent stochastic Stokes equations with multiplicative noise. arXiv:1905.03289v2 [math.NA]). We show that eliminating this gradient part from the noise in the numerical scheme leads to optimally convergent mixed finite element methods and that this conceptual idea may be used to retool numerical methods that are well known in the deterministic setting, including pressure stabilization methods, so that their optimal convergence properties can still be maintained in the stochastic setting. Computational experiments are also provided to validate the theoretical results and to illustrate the conceptual usefulness of the proposed numerical approach.

  3. A mixed finite element method is presented for the Biot consolidation problem in poroelasticity. More precisely, the displacement is approximated by using the Crouzeix-Raviart nonconforming finite elements, while the fluid pressure is approximated by using the node conforming finite elements. The well-posedness of the fully discrete scheme is established, and a corresponding priori error estimate with optimal order in the energy norm is also derived. Numerical experiments are provided to validate the theoretical results.

  4. This paper is concerned with the PDE (partial differential equation) and numerical analysis of a modified one-dimensional intravascular stent model. It is proved that the modified model has a unique weak solution by using the Galerkin method combined with a compactness argument. A semi-discrete finite-element method and a fully discrete scheme using the Euler time-stepping have been formulated for the PDE model. Optimal order error estimates in the energy norm are proved for both schemes. Numerical results are presented, along with comparisons between different decoupling strategies and time-stepping schemes. Lastly, extensions of the model and its PDE and numerical analysis results to the two-dimensional case are also briefly discussed.

  5. Abstract In this work we introduce semi-implicit or implicit finite difference schemes for the continuity equation with a gradient flow structure. Examples of such equations include the linear Fokker–Planck equation and the Keller–Segel equations. The two proposed schemes are first-order accurate in time, explicitly solvable, and second-order and fourth-order accurate in space, which are obtained via finite difference implementation of the classical continuous finite element method. The fully discrete schemes are proved to be positivity preserving and energy dissipative: the second-order scheme can achieve so unconditionally while the fourth-order scheme only requires a mild time step and mesh size constraint. In particular, the fourth-order scheme is the first high order spatial discretization that can achieve both positivity and energy decay properties, which is suitable for long time simulation and to obtain accurate steady state solutions.
