The most common macrofossils in the highly diverse flora from Laguna del Hunco (early Eocene of Chubut, Argentina) are “Celtis” ameghinoi leaves, whose true affinities have remained enigmatic for a century. The species accounts for 14% of all plant fossils in unbiased field counts and bears diverse insect-feeding damage, suggesting high biomass and paleoecological importance. The leaves have well-preserved architecture but lack cuticles or reproductive attachments. We find that the fossils only superficially resemble Celtis and comparable taxa in Cannabaceae, Ulmaceae, Rhamnaceae, Malvaceae, and many other families. However, the distinctive foliar morphology conforms in detail to Dobinea (Anacardiaceae), a genus with two species of shrubs and large herbs ranging from India’s Far East and Tibet to Myanmar and central China, and we propose Dobineaites ameghinoi (E.W. Berry) gen et. comb. nov. for the fossils. This discovery strengthens the extensive biogeographic links between Eocene Patagonia and mainland Asia, provides the first fossil record related to Dobinea, and represents a rare Gondwanan macrofossil occurrence of Anacardiaceae, which was widespread and diversified in the Northern Hemisphere at the time. The diverse leaf architecture of Anacardiaceae includes several patterns usually associated with other taxa, and many other leaf fossils in this family may remain misidentified.

Sindora Leaflets from the Early Pleistocene Kon Tum Flora of Central Vietnam
Premise of research. Fabaceae fossil leaf records are abundant, but their identification within the family is challenging because of the lack of distinctive leaf architecture in many genera. Sindora (Fabaceae, Detarioideae, Detarieae) is a genus of paleotropical trees distributed mainly in Southeast Asia. Previous macrofossil records are limited to questionable leaves and woods. We report fossil leaflets with diagnostic characters of Sindora in a newly discovered early Pleistocene flora from Kon Tum, central Vietnam. Methodology. We collected 37 fossil fabaceous leaflets from the Kon Tum Formation at the Hung Phat site in Kon Tum City, Quang Ngai Province, Central Highlands region of Vietnam. Leaf architecture was compared with extant species by consulting digitized herbarium collections and the literature. Pivotal results. Diagnostic characters of the fossil leaflets include the pulvinulate petiolule, retuse to emarginate apex, wavy margin, convex to cuneate base, curved midvein, craspedodromous or semicraspedodromous secondary venation, and subapical midvein gland. The geologically recent age, morphological similarity, and overlapping extant and fossil distributions with extant S. siamensis all support assignment to Sindora cf. S. siamensis. Conclusions. The new specimens represent the first unequivocal macrofossil record for Sindora, confirming the genus’s presence in Indochinese forests by the early Pleistocene. As the first deciduous taxon recognized in the Kon Tum flora, the Sindora cf. S. siamensis occurrence supports a monsoonal regional climate, as found today. The contrast between the fossil abundance and current endangered status of S. siamensis in Vietnam provides paleobotanical insights for conservation planning.

We report here the occurrence and metric characteristics of a large species of Equus from Montopoli (Tuscany, Italy) correlated with the middle Villafranchian, 2.6 Ma (early Pleistocene). This species co-occurs with a rare “Hipparion” sp. at Montopoli. We compare the Montopoli Equus cf. livenzovensis with a large suite of extant Equus including zebras, asses and a large suite of fossil Equus using bivariate and log10 ratio analyses of anterior and posterior 1st phalanges III. Our comparisons show that Montopoli anterior and posterior 1st phalanges III are larger than in living zebras and asses and comparable in size and proportions to the early Pleistocene large Chinese species Equus eisenmannae and late Pleistocene Rancho La Brean Equus occidentale. Equus livenzovensis was a larger species than Equus stenonis and Equus stehlini. Equus cf. livenzovensis is not represented as far as we know by skulls and dentitions in the Italian Villafranchian record.more » « less

Two silicified fossil woods are identified as a new species of Laurinoxylon from the Huitrera Formation at Laguna del Hunco in the Chubut Province of Argentina. Supporting characters include the absence of growth ring boundaries, vessels solitary or in short radial multiples, simple and scalariform perforation plates, alternate intervessel pitting, scalariform vessel-ray pits, scarce axial parenchyma, septate fibres, rays usually one to four cells wide, and idioblasts commonly associated with rays and rarely with the axial parenchyma. The fossil woods resemble members of the Perseae-Cinnamomeae-Laureae clade but do not closely match any extant genus; they therefore probably represent an extinct lineage. Although lauraceous woods are known from other Palaeocene and Eocene floras in Patagonia, the presence of the family at Laguna del Hunco was previously based only on leaf compressions without preserved cuticular details. Our new record confirms the occurrence of Lauraceae in the diverse Laguna del Hunco flora, which contains many genera associated with extant rainforest floras.more » « less

Abstract We discuss a recent assessment by Dörken et al. (2021) regarding the affinities of the Eocene fossil species Huncocladus laubenfelsii from Laguna del Hunco (Patagonia, Argentina). We originally (Andruchow-Colombo et al., 2019) assigned this species to the conifer family Podocarpaceae as the first certain South American macrofossil record of the phyllocladoid lineage (Huncocladus+Phyllocladus), based on a combination of numerous macro- and micromorphological vegetative characters. However, Dörken et al. (2021) rejected the podocarpaceous affinity of H. laubenfelsii and considered it to be more closely related to the cycad genera Bowenia or Eobowenia. Their assessment was based almost entirely on two cuticular characters, with only superficial consideration of the abundant additional evidence available that included several diagnostic macromorphological features. We review the two characters mentioned by these authors, and other features, and find that their suggestion is contradicted by the available evidence, maintaining our original assignment. Critical characters include presence/absence of a midvein, secondary venation pattern, arrangement and general morphology of the photosynthetic structures, and morphology and disposition of epidermal cells.more » « less

Abstract PremiseAsia's wet tropical forests face a severe biodiversity crisis, but few fossils record their evolutionary history. We recently discovered in situ cuticles on fossil leaves, attributed to the giant rainforest treeDryobalanopsof the iconic Dipterocarpaceae family, from the Plio‐Pleistocene of Brunei Darussalam (northern Borneo). Studying these specimens allowed us to validate the generic identification and delineate affinities to living dipterocarp species. MethodsWe compared the leaf cuticles and architecture of these fossil leaves with the seven livingDryobalanopsspecies. ResultsThe cuticular features shared between the fossils and extantDryobalanops, including the presence of giant stomata on veins, confirm their generic placement. The leaf characters are identical to those ofD. rappa, an IUCN red‐listed Endangered, northern Borneo endemic. TheD. rappamonodominance at the fossil site, along withDipterocarpusspp. leaf fossils, indicates a dipterocarp‐dominated forest near the mangrove‐swamp depocenter, most likely in an adjacent peatland. ConclusionsTheDryobalanops rappafossils are the first fossil evidence of a living endangered tropical tree species and show how analysis of in situ cuticles can help illuminate the poorly known floristic history of the Asian tropics.
