Title: Deviations from the Porter-Thomas Distribution due to Nonstatistical γ Decay below the Nd150 Neutron Separation Threshold
We introduce a new method for the study of fluctuations of partial transition widths based on nuclear resonance fluorescence experiments with quasimonochromatic linearly polarized photon beams below particle separation thresholds. It is based on the average branching of decays of J=1 states of an even-even nucleus to the 21+ state in comparison to the ground state. Between 5 and 7 MeV, a constant average branching ratio for γ decays from 1− states of 0.490(16) is observed for the nuclide Nd150 . Assuming χ2 -distributed partial transition widths, this average branching ratio is related to a degree of freedom of ν=1.93(12) , rejecting the validity of the Porter-Thomas distribution, requiring ν=1 . The observed deviation can be explained by nonstatistical effects in the γ -decay behavior with contributions in the range of 9.4(10)% up to 94(10)%.  more » « less

  1. We report the results of the first search for Standard Model and baryon-number-violating two-body decays of the neutral B mesons to Λ0 and Ωc(*)0 using 711  fb−1 of data collected at the ϒ(4S) resonance with the Belle detector at the KEKB asymmetric-energy e+e− collider. We observe no evidence of signal from any such decays and set 95% confidence-level upper limits on the products of B0 and B¯ 0 branching fractions for these two-body decays with B( Ωc0 →π+Ω−) in the range between 9.5×10−8 and 31.2×10−8 . 2. A study of Λb0 and Ξb0 decays to Λh+h′− ( h(′)=π,K ) is performed using pp collision data collected by the LHCb experiment during LHC Runs 1–2, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 9  fb−1 . The branching fractions for these decays are measured using the Λb0 → Λc+ (→Λπ+)π− decay as a control channel. The decays Λb0→Λπ+π− and Ξb0→ΛK−π+ are observed for the first time. For decay modes with sufficient signal yields, CP asymmetries are measured in the full and localized regions of the final-state phase space. Evidence is found for CP violation in the Λb0→ΛK+K− decay, interpreted as originating primarily from an asymmetric Λb0→N*+K− decay amplitude. The measured CP asymmetries for other decays are compatible with zero. © 2025 CERN, for the LHCb Collaboration2025CERN

  3. We present the first measurement of nuclear recoils from solar B8 neutrinos via coherent elastic neutrino-nucleus scattering with the XENONnT dark matter experiment. The central detector of XENONnT is a low-background, two-phase time projection chamber with a 5.9 t sensitive liquid xenon target. A blind analysis with an exposure of 3.51  t×yr resulted in 37 observed events above 0.5 keV, with ( 26.4−1.3+1.4 ) events expected from backgrounds. The background-only hypothesis is rejected with a statistical significance of 2.73σ . The measured B8 solar neutrino flux of ( 4.7−2.3+3.6 )×106  cm−2 s−1 is consistent with results from the Sudbury Neutrino Observatory. The measured neutrino flux-weighted CEνNS cross section on Xe of ( 1.1−0.5+0.8 )×10−39  cm2 is consistent with the Standard Model prediction. This is the first direct measurement of nuclear recoils from solar neutrinos with a dark matter detector. Published by the American Physical Society2024

  4. Evidence of the production of two Z bosons and a photon in proton-proton collisions is reported for the first time in CMS. The analysis uses data collected by the CMS experiment between 2016 and 2018 at a center-of-mass energy of 13 TeV, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 138  fb−1 . Evidence for the process pp→ZZγ→4ℓγ ( ℓ=e , μ ), with an observed (expected) significance of 3.7 (3.1) standard deviations in a fiducial region defined by pTγ >20  GeV , |ηγ|<2.4 , ΔR(ℓ,γ)>0.5 , mZ between 60 and 120 GeV, and the invariant mass of either of the two Z bosons combined with the photon ( m Zγ ) larger than 100 GeV, is reported. The measured (predicted) fiducial cross section is 60−22+27   ab ( 47.56±0.04  ab ). Additionally, the inclusive production of pp→4ℓγ is studied by removing the m Zγ requirement to include final state radiation where one Z boson decays to 2ℓγ , yielding an observed (expected) significance of 5.0 (4.2) standard deviations and a measured (predicted) fiducial cross section of 156−35+39   ab ( 99.97±0.09  ab ).

  5. We search for the rare decay B+→K+νν¯ in a 362  fb−1 sample of electron-positron collisions at the ϒ(4S) resonance collected with the Belle II detector at the SuperKEKB collider. We use the inclusive properties of the accompanying B meson in ϒ(4S)→ B B¯ events to suppress background from other decays of the signal B candidate and light-quark pair production. We validate the measurement with an auxiliary analysis based on a conventional hadronic reconstruction of the accompanying B meson. For background suppression, we exploit distinct signal features using machine learning methods tuned with simulated data. The signal-reconstruction efficiency and background suppression are validated through various control channels. The branching fraction is extracted in a maximum likelihood fit. Our inclusive and hadronic analyses yield consistent results for the B+→K+νν¯ branching fraction of [2.7±0.5(stat)±0.5(syst)]×10−5 and [ 1.1−0.8+0.9 (stat )−0.5+0.8 (syst)] ×10−5 , respectively. Combining the results, we determine the branching fraction of the decay B+→K+νν¯ to be [2.3±0.5(stat )−0.4+0.5 (syst)]×10−5 , providing the first evidence for this decay at 3.5 standard deviations. The combined result is 2.7 standard deviations above the standard model expectation. Published by the American Physical Society2024
