This paper presents a brief overview of the various (related) research the author has been involved with in the area of navigation and wayfinding for people with visual impairments. The first major piece of research presented is that of the building and deployment of a beacon-based indoor navigation and wayfinding system called GuideBeacon for people with visual impairments. The second major piece of research presented is a broader community-based effort called CityGuide to enable various location-based services (including navigation and wayfinding) in both indoor and outdoor environments for people with disabilities. The paper concludes by summarizing a specific challenge in the area that warrant future research attention.

null (Ed.)Amid climate change, biodiversity loss and food insecurity, there is the growing need to draw synergies between micro-scale environmental processes and practices, and macro-level ecosystem dynamics to facilitate conservation decision-making. Adopting this synergistic approach can improve crop yields and profitability more sustainably, enhance livelihoods and mitigate climate change. Using spatially explicit data generated through a public participatory geographic information system methodology (n = 37), complemented by spatial analysis, interviews (n = 68) and focus group discussions (n = 4), we explored the synergies between participatory farmer-to-farmer agroecology knowledge sharing, farm-level decisions and their links with macro-level prioritization of conservation strategies. We mapped farm conditions and ecosystem services (ES) of two village areas with varying knowledge systems about farming. Results of the farm-level analysis revealed variations in spatial perception among farmers, differences in understanding the dynamics of crop growth and varying priorities for extension services based on agroecological knowledge. The ES use pattern analysis revealed hotspots in the mapped ES indicators with similarities in both village areas. Despite the similarities in ES use, priorities for biodiversity conservation align with farmers’ understanding of farm processes and practices. Farmers with training in agroecology prioritized strategies that are ecologically friendly while farmers with no agroecology training prioritized the use of strict regulations. Importantly, the results show that agroecology can potentially contribute to biodiversity conservation and food security, with climate change mitigation co-benefits. The findings generally contribute to debates on land sparing and land sharing conservation strategies and advance social learning theory as it pertains to acquiring agroecological knowledge for improved yield and a sustainable environment.more » « less

Semiconducting quantum dots (Q-dots) with strain-tunable electronic properties are good contenders for quantum computing devices, as they hold promise to exhibit a high level of photon entanglement. The optical and electronic properties of Q-dots vary with their size, shape, and makeup. An assortment of Q-dots has been studied, including ZnO, ZnS, CdSe and perovskites [1]. We have employed both Raman spectroscopy (to precisely determine their vibrational frequencies) and UV-VIS spectroscopy (to determine accurately their band gap energies). The electronic band structure and density of states of the ZnO and ZnS Q-dots have been investigated under strain using Density Functional Theory (DFT). The computer program SIESTA (Spanish Initiative for Electronic Simulations with Thousands of Atoms) was used to perform the DFT calculations via the linear combination of atomic orbitals (LCAO) method. The spin polarization of such systems may itself be used to encode information or influence the electronic properties of semiconducting Q-dots, which deserve special attention, as they have potential applications in lasers, photovoltaic cells, and imaging. In addition, we have investigated pristine and functionalized graphene nanoplatelets and metal oxides for sensing applications.more » « less

A computational investigation is presented, in conjunction with synthesis and experimental characterization, into the structural, electronic, and optical properties of layered two‐dimensional organic lead bromide perovskites. Materials based on the chiral (R/S)‐4‐fluoro‐α‐methylbenzylammonium (R/S‐FMBA), which have been shown to lead to bright room‐temperature circularly polarized luminescence, are contrasted with the similar achiral 4‐fluorobenzylammonium (FBA). Using density functional theory (DFT) with van der Waals (vdW) corrections, relaxed structures (compared with X‐ray diffraction, XRD) and optical absorption spectra (compared with experiments) are studied, as well as band structure and orbital character of transitions. A Python code is developed and provided to calculate octahedral distortions and compare DFT and XRD results, finding that vdW corrections are important for accuracy and that DFT overestimates octahedral tilt angles. (FMBA)2PbBr4shows among the largest tilt angle differences (often termed ) reported, 14°–15°, indicating strong inversion symmetry‐breaking, which enables its chiral emission. A large resulting Dresselhaus spin‐splitting effect is found. The lowest‐energy optical transitions involve the perovskite only and are polarized within the layer. This work furthers understanding of structure‐property relations with applications to optoelectronics and spintronics.more » « less

How are people using current smart home technologies, and how do they conceptualize future ones that are more interconnected and more capable than those available today? We deployed an online survey study to 150 participants to investigate use of and opinions about smart speakers, home robots, virtual assistants, and other smart home devices. We also gauged how impressions of connected smart home devices are shaped by the way the devices interact with one another. Through a mixed-methods qualitative and quantitative approach, we found that people mostly use single devices for single functions, and have simple and brief interactions with virtual assistants. However, they imagine their future devices to have more control over the physical environment (i.e., interact with each other) and envision them interacting with people in more socially complex ways. These findings motivate design considerations and research directions for connected smart home technologies.more » « less
