Abstract The total charm-quark production cross section per unit of rapidity$$\textrm{d}\sigma ({{\textrm{c}}\overline{\textrm{c}}})/\textrm{d}y$$ , and the fragmentation fractions of charm quarks to different charm-hadron species$$f(\textrm{c}\rightarrow {\textrm{h}}_{\textrm{c}})$$ , are measured for the first time in p–Pb collisions at$$\sqrt{s_\textrm{NN}} = 5.02~\text {Te}\hspace{-1.00006pt}\textrm{V} $$ at midrapidity ($$-0.96<0.04$$ in the centre-of-mass frame) using data collected by ALICE at the CERN LHC. The results are obtained based on all the available measurements of prompt production of ground-state charm-hadron species:$$\textrm{D}^{0}$$ ,$$\textrm{D}^{+}$$ ,$$\textrm{D}_\textrm{s}^{+}$$ , and$$\mathrm {J/\psi }$$ mesons, and$$\Lambda _\textrm{c}^{+}$$ and$$\Xi _\textrm{c}^{0}$$ baryons. The resulting cross section is$$ \textrm{d}\sigma ({{\textrm{c}}\overline{\textrm{c}}})/\textrm{d}y =219.6 \pm 6.3\;(\mathrm {stat.}) {\;}_{-11.8}^{+10.5}\;(\mathrm {syst.}) {\;}_{-2.9}^{+8.3}\;(\mathrm {extr.})\pm 5.4\;(\textrm{BR})\pm 4.6\;(\mathrm {lumi.}) \pm 19.5\;(\text {rapidity shape})+15.0\;(\Omega _\textrm{c}^{0})\;\textrm{mb} $$ , which is consistent with a binary scaling of pQCD calculations from pp collisions. The measured fragmentation fractions are compatible with those measured in pp collisions at$$\sqrt{s} = 5.02$$ and 13 TeV, showing an increase in the relative production rates of charm baryons with respect to charm mesons in pp and p–Pb collisions compared with$$\mathrm {e^{+}e^{-}}$$ and$$\mathrm {e^{-}p}$$ collisions. The$$p_\textrm{T}$$ -integrated nuclear modification factor of charm quarks,$$R_\textrm{pPb}({\textrm{c}}\overline{\textrm{c}})= 0.91 \pm 0.04\;\mathrm{(stat.)} ^{+0.08}_{-0.09}\;\mathrm{(syst.)} ^{+0.05}_{-0.03}\;\mathrm{(extr.)} \pm 0.03\;\mathrm{(lumi.)}$$ , is found to be consistent with unity and with theoretical predictions including nuclear modifications of the parton distribution functions.

A linear collider vision for the future of particle physics
Abstract In this paper we review the physics opportunities at linear$$\mathrm{e}^{+}\mathrm{e}^{-} $$ colliders with a special focus on high centre-of-mass energies and beam polarisation, take a fresh look at the various accelerator technologies available or under development and, for the first time, discuss how a facility first equipped with a technology that is mature today could be upgraded with technologies of tomorrow to reach much higher energies and/or luminosities. In addition, we discuss detectors, alternative collider modes, as well as opportunities for beyond-collider experiments and R&D facilities as part of a linear collider facility (LCF). The material of this paper supports all plans for$$\mathrm{e}^{+}\mathrm{e}^{-} $$ linear colliders and the additional opportunities they offer, independently of technology choice or proposed site, as well as R&D for advanced accelerator technologies. This joint perspective on the physics goals, early technologies and upgrade strategies has been developed by the LCVision team based on an initial discussion at LCWS2024 in Tokyo and a follow-up at the LCVision Community Event at CERN in January 2025. It heavily builds on decades of achievements of the global linear collider community, in particular in the context of CLIC and ILC.

Abstract A model based on a$$U(1)_{T^3_R}$$ extension of the Standard Model can address the mass hierarchy between generations of fermions, explain thermal dark matter abundance, and the muon$$g - 2$$ ,$$R_{(D)}$$ , and$$R_{(D^*)}$$ anomalies. The model contains a light scalar boson$$\phi '$$ and a heavy vector-like quark$$\chi _\textrm{u}$$ that can be probed at CERN’s large hadron collider (LHC). We perform a phenomenology study on the production of$$\phi '$$ and$${\chi }_u$$ particles from proton–proton$$(\textrm{pp})$$ collisions at the LHC at$$\sqrt{s}=13.6$$ TeV, primarily through$$g{-g}$$ and$$t{-\chi _\textrm{u}}$$ fusion. We work under a simplified model approach and directly take the$$\chi _\textrm{u}$$ and$$\phi '$$ masses as free parameters. We perform a phenomenological analysis considering$$\chi _\textrm{u}$$ final states to b-quarks, muons, and neutrinos, and$$\phi '$$ decays to$$\mu ^+\mu ^-$$ . A machine learning algorithm is used to maximize the signal sensitivity, considering an integrated luminosity of 3000$$\text {fb}^{-1}$$ . The proposed methodology can be a key mode for discovery over a large mass range, including low masses, traditionally considered difficult due to experimental constraints.more » « less

Abstract A family ofrdistinct sets$$\{A_1,\ldots , A_r\}$$ is anr-sunflower if for all$$1 \leqslant i < j\leqslant r$$ and$$1 \leqslant i' < j'\leqslant r$$ , we have$$A_i\cap A_j = A_{i'}\cap A_{j'}$$ . Erdős and Rado conjectured in 1960 that every family$$\mathcal {H}$$ of$$\ell $$ -element sets of size at least$$K(r)^\ell $$ contains anr-sunflower, whereK(r) is some function that depends only onr. We prove that if$$\mathcal {H}$$ is a family of$$\ell $$ -element sets of VC-dimension at mostdand$$|\mathcal H| > (C r(\log d+\log ^*\ell ))^\ell $$ for some absolute constant$$C > 0$$ , then$$\mathcal {H}$$ contains anr-sunflower. This improves a recent result of Fox, Pach, and Suk. When$$d=1$$ , we obtain a sharp bound, namely that$$|\mathcal H| > (r-1)^\ell $$ is sufficient. Along the way, we establish a strengthening of the Kahn–Kalai conjecture for set families of bounded VC-dimension, which is of independent interest.more » « less

Abstract The transverse momentum ($$p_{\textrm{T}}$$ ) differential production cross section of the promptly produced charm-strange baryon$$\mathrm {\Xi _{c}^{0}}$$ (and its charge conjugate$$\overline{\mathrm {\Xi _{c}^{0}}}$$ ) is measured at midrapidity via its hadronic decay into$$\mathrm{\pi ^{+}}\Xi ^{-}$$ in p–Pb collisions at a centre-of-mass energy per nucleon–nucleon collision$$\sqrt{s_{\textrm{NN}}}~=~5.02$$ TeV with the ALICE detector at the LHC. The$$\mathrm {\Xi _{c}^{0}}$$ nuclear modification factor ($$R_{\textrm{pPb}}$$ ), calculated from the cross sections in pp and p–Pb collisions, is presented and compared with the$$R_{\textrm{pPb}}$$ of$$\mathrm {\Lambda _{c}^{+}}$$ baryons. The ratios between the$$p_{\textrm{T}}$$ -differential production cross section of$$\mathrm {\Xi _{c}^{0}}$$ baryons and those of$$\mathrm {D^0}$$ mesons and$$\mathrm {\Lambda _{c}^{+}}$$ baryons are also reported and compared with results at forward and backward rapidity from the LHCb Collaboration. The measurements of the production cross section of prompt$$\Xi ^0_\textrm{c}$$ baryons are compared with a model based on perturbative QCD calculations of charm-quark production cross sections, which includes only cold nuclear matter effects in p–Pb collisions, and underestimates the measurement by a factor of about 50. This discrepancy is reduced when the data is compared with a model that includes string formation beyond leading-colour approximation or in which hadronisation is implemented via quark coalescence. The$$p_{\textrm{T}}$$ -integrated cross section of prompt$$\Xi ^0_\textrm{c}$$ -baryon production at midrapidity extrapolated down to$$p_{\textrm{T}}$$ = 0 is also reported. These measurements offer insights and constraints for theoretical calculations of the hadronisation process. Additionally, they provide inputs for the calculation of the charm production cross section in p–Pb collisions at midrapidity.more » « less

Abstract We report the first measurement of the inclusivee+e−→$$ b\overline{b} $$ →$$ {D}_s^{\pm } $$ Xande+e−→$$ b\overline{b} $$ → D0/$$ {\overline{D}}^0 $$ Xcross sections in the energy range from 10.63 to 11.02 GeV. Based on these results, we determineσ(e+e−→$$ {B}_s^0{\overline{B}}_s^0 $$ X) andσ(e+e−→$$ B\overline{B} $$ X) in the same energy range. We measure the fraction of$$ {B}_s^0 $$ events at Υ(10860) to befs= ($$ {22.0}_{-2.1}^{+2.0} $$ )%. We determine also the ratio of the$$ {B}_s^0 $$ inclusive branching fractions$$ \mathcal{B} $$ ($$ {B}_s^0 $$ → D0/$$ {\overline{D}}^0 $$ X)/$$ \mathcal{B} $$ ($$ {B}_s^0 $$ →$$ {D}_s^{\pm } $$ X) = 0.416 ± 0.018 ± 0.092. The results are obtained using the data collected with the Belle detector at the KEKB asymmetric-energye+e−collider.more » « less
