Title: ALMAGAL. VII. Cataloging Hierarchical Continuum Structure from Cores to Clumps across the Galactic Disk
Abstract Investigating the multiscale fragmentation of dense clumps into compact cores is essential for understanding the processes that govern the initial distribution of mass in stellar clusters and how high-mass stars (>8M) form. We present a catalog of the hierarchical continuum structure from 904 clumps observed in the ALMAGAL program, a high-resolution (0 . 15–0 . 8) 1.38 mm Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array large program targeting dense clumps capable of high-mass star formation throughout the Galactic disk. We useastrodendro, a dendrogram-based algorithm, on a uniform linear resolution (2000 au) version of the data to extract 5160 continuum structures with effective radii spanning 800–42000 au and estimated masses between 0.05–670M. With our large sample, we statistically examine differences in clump properties for regions with varying levels of hierarchical complexity. We find that clumps exhibiting the richest hierarchical morphology have distributions with higher dust temperatures, surface densities, luminosity-to-mass (L/M) ratios, and most massive core masses, indicating that these regions tend to be at later evolutionary stages. We find a positive correlation between the mass of cores from the ALMAGAL core catalog and the surface density of their surrounding structures identified in this work. However, this correlation is weaker for cores in more evolved clumps, where lower-mass cores can be found at higher local surface densities. This could indicate that some cores accrete mass less efficiently from the intraclump reservoir than others, despite the total available mass increasing over time, a scenario that is congruent with a clump-fed core accretion model.  more » « less

  1. Abstract We present a catalog of 315 protostellar outflow candidates detected in SiOJ= 5 − 4 in the ALMA-IMF Large Program, observed with ∼2000 au spatial resolution, 0.339 km s−1velocity resolution, and 2–12 mJy beam−1(0.18–0.8 K) sensitivity. We find median outflow masses, momenta, and kinetic energies of ∼0.3M, 4Mkm s−1, and 1045erg, respectively. Median outflow lifetimes are 6000 yr, yielding median mass, momentum, and energy rates of Ṁ = 10−4.4Myr−1, Ṗ = 10−3.2Mkm s−1yr−1, and Ė = 1L. We analyze these outflow properties in the aggregate in each field. We find correlations between field-aggregated SiO outflow properties and total mass in cores (∼3σ–5σ), and no correlations above 3σwith clump mass, clump luminosity, or clump luminosity-to-mass ratio. We perform a linear regression analysis and find that the correlation between field-aggregated outflow mass and total clump mass—which has been previously described in the literature—may actually be mediated by the relationship between outflow mass and total mass in cores. We also find that the most massive SiO outflow in each field is typically responsible for only 15%–30% of the total outflow mass (60% upper limit). Our data agree well with the established mechanical force−bolometric luminosity relationship in the literature, and our data extend this relationship up toL≥ 106Land Ṗ ≥ 1Mkm s−1yr−1. Our lack of correlation with clumpL/Mis inconsistent with models of protocluster formation in which all protostars start forming at the same time.

  2. Abstract We measure the true obliquity of TOI-2364, a K dwarf with a sub-Saturn-mass (Mp = 0.18MJ) transiting planet on the upper edge of the hot-Neptune desert. We used new Rossiter–McLaughlin observations gathered with the Keck Planet Finder to measure the sky-projected obliquityλ = 7° + 10°–11°. Combined with a stellar rotation period of 23.47 ± 0.29 days measured with photometry from theTierrasObservatory, this yields a stellar inclination of 90° ± 13° and a true obliquityψ = 15 .° 6 + 7 .° 7–7 .° 3, indicating that the planet’s orbit is well aligned with the rotation axis of its host star. The determination ofψis important for investigating a potential bimodality in the orbits of short-period sub-Saturns around cool stars, which tend to be either aligned with or perpendicular to their host stars’ spin axes.

  3. Abstract TOI-3884 b is an unusual 6.4Rplanet orbiting an M4 host, whose transits display large and persistent spot-crossing events. We used theTierrasObservatory to monitor both the long-term photometric variability of TOI-3884 and changes in the spot-crossing events across multiple transits of the planet. We show that the star rotates with a period of 11.020 ± 0.015 days. We simultaneously model the rotational modulation of the star and variations in transit shapes that arise due to rotation of the spot, allowing us to determine the true stellar obliquity,ψ. The data are best described by a planet on a misaligned orbit around a highly inclined star (ψ =  77 .° 4 2 .° 5 +2 .° 3 ;i =  22 .° 3 1 .° 6 +1 .° 8 ) that hosts a large polar starspot (rspot =  31.21.9+2.4 spot =  80 .° 5 ± 1 .° 2). Archival photometry from the Zwicky Transient Facility suggests that this polar spot has persisted on TOI-3884 for at least seven years. The TOI-3884 system provides a benchmark for studying the evolution of a polar spot on an M dwarf.

  4. Abstract The cluster mass–richness relation (MRR) is an observationally efficient and potentially powerful cosmological tool for constraining the matter density Ωmand the amplitude of fluctuationsσ8using the cluster abundance technique. We derive the MRR relation usingGalWCat19, a publicly available galaxy cluster catalog we created from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey-DR13 spectroscopic data set. In the MRR, cluster mass scales with richness as log M200 =α+βlog N200 . We find that the MRR we derive is consistent with both the IllustrisTNG and mini-Uchuu cosmological numerical simulations, with a slope ofβ≈ 1. We use the MRR we derived to estimate cluster masses from theGalWCat19catalog, which we then use to set constraints on Ωmandσ8. Utilizing the all-member MRR, we obtain constraints of Ωm= 0.310.03+0.04 andσ8= 0.820.04+0.05 , and utilizing the red member MRR only, we obtain Ωm= 0.310.03+0.04 andσ8= 0.810.04+0.05 . Our constraints on Ωmandσ8are consistent and very competitive with the Planck 2018 results.

  5. Abstract A search for pseudoscalar or scalar bosons decaying to a top quark pair ( t t¯ ) in final states with one or two charged leptons is presented. The analyzed proton–proton collision data was recorded at s=13TeV by the CMS experiment at the CERN LHC and corresponds to an integrated luminosity of 138  fb1 . The invariant mass m t t¯ of the reconstructed t t¯ system and variables sensitive to its spin and parity are used to discriminate against the standard model t t¯ background. Interference between pseudoscalar or scalar boson production and the standard model t t¯ continuum is included, leading to peak-dip structures in the m t t¯ distribution. An excess of the data above the background prediction, based on perturbative quantum chromodynamics (QCD) calculations, is observed near the kinematic t t¯ production threshold, while good agreement is found for high m t t¯ . The data are consistent with the background prediction if the contribution from a simplified model of a color-singlet 1 S0[1] t t¯ quasi-bound state η t , inspired by nonrelativistic QCD, is added. Upper limits at 95% confidence level are set on the coupling between the pseudoscalar or scalar bosons and the top quark for boson masses in the range 365–1000 GeV, relative widths between 0.5% and 25%, and two background scenarios with or without η t contribution.
