Abstract In this paper, we study the convergence behavior of the diffuse domain method (DDM) for solving a class of second-order parabolic partial differential equations with Neumann boundary condition posed on general irregular domains. The DDM employs a phase-field function to extend the original parabolic problem to a similar but slightly modified problem defined over a larger rectangular domain that contains the target physical domain. Based on the weighted Sobolev spaces, we rigorously establish the convergence of the diffuse domain solution to the original solution as the interface thickness parameter goes to zero, together with the corresponding optimal error estimates under the weighted $L^2$ and $H^1$ norms. Numerical experiments are also presented to validate the theoretical results.

A Modified Brinkman Penalization Fictitious Domain Method for the Unsteady Navier‐Stokes Equations
ABSTRACT This paper investigates a modification of the fictitious domain method with continuation in the lower‐order coefficients for the unsteady Navier‐Stokes equations governing the motion of an incompressible homogeneous fluid in a bounded 2D or 3D domain. The modification enables a solution‐dependent choice of the critical parameter. Global‐in‐time existence and convergence of a weak solution to the auxiliary problem are proved, and local‐in‐time existence and convergence of a unique strong solution are established. For the strong solution, a new higher‐order convergence rate estimate in the penalization parameter is obtained. The introduced framework allows us to apply a pointwise divergence‐free finite element method as a discretization technique, leading to a strongly mass conservative discrete fictitious domain method. A numerical example illustrates the performance of the method.

Abstract In this paper, we propose and analyze a finite-element method of variational data assimilation for a second-order parabolic interface equation on a two-dimensional bounded domain. The Tikhonov regularization plays a key role in translating the data assimilation problem into an optimization problem. Then the existence, uniqueness and stability are analyzed for the solution of the optimization problem. We utilize the finite-element method for spatial discretization and backward Euler method for the temporal discretization. Then based on the Lagrange multiplier idea, we derive the optimality systems for both the continuous and the discrete data assimilation problems for the second-order parabolic interface equation. The convergence and the optimal error estimate are proved with the recovery of Galerkin orthogonality. Moreover, three iterative methods, which decouple the optimality system and significantly save computational cost, are developed to solve the discrete time evolution optimality system. Finally, numerical results are provided to validate the proposed method.more » « less

Abstract The paper addresses an error analysis of an Eulerian finite element method used for solving a linearized Navier–Stokes problem in a time-dependent domain. In this study, the domain’s evolution is assumed to be known and independent of the solution to the problem at hand. The numerical method employed in the study combines a standard backward differentiation formula-type time-stepping procedure with a geometrically unfitted finite element discretization technique. Additionally, Nitsche’s method is utilized to enforce the boundary conditions. The paper presents a convergence estimate for several velocity–pressure elements that are inf-sup stable. The estimate demonstrates optimal order convergence in the energy norm for the velocity component and a scaled $$L^{2}(H^{1})$$-type norm for the pressure component.more » « less

ABSTRACT The leading‐order asymptotic behavior of the solution of the Cauchy initial‐value problem for the Benjamin–Ono equation in is obtained explicitly for generic rational initial data . An explicit asymptotic wave profile is given, in terms of the branches of the multivalued solution of the inviscid Burgers equation with initial data , such that the solution of the Benjamin–Ono equation with dispersion parameter and initial data satisfies in the locally uniform sense as , provided a discriminant inequality holds implying that certain caustic curves in the ‐plane are avoided. In some cases, this convergence implies strong convergence. The asymptotic profile is consistent with the modulated multiphase wave solutions described by Dobrokhotov and Krichever.more » « less

Abstract We study the following parabolic nonlocal 4-th order degenerate equation arising from the epitaxial growth on crystalline materials. Here a>0 is a given parameter. By relying on the theory of gradient flows,we first prove the global existence of a variational inequality solution with a general initial datum.Furthermore, to obtain a global strong solution, the main difficulty is the singularity of the logarithmic term when {u_{xx}+a} approaches zero. Thus we show that,if the initial datum is uniformly bounded away from zero, then such property is preserved for all positive times. Finally, we will prove several higher regularity results for this global strong solution. These finer properties provide a rigorous justification for the global-in-time monotone solution to the epitaxial growth model with nonlocal elastic effects on vicinal surface.more » « less
