Title: The Most Luminous Known Fast Blue Optical Transient AT 2024wpp: Unprecedented Evolution and Properties in the Ultraviolet to the Near-infrared
Abstract We present an extensive photometric and spectroscopic ultraviolet–optical–infrared campaign on the luminous fast blue optical transient (LFBOT) AT 2024wpp over the first ∼100 days. AT 2024wpp is the most luminous LFBOT discovered to date, withLpk ≈ (2–4) × 1045erg s−1(5–10 times that of the prototypical AT 2018cow). This extreme luminosity enabled the acquisition of the most detailed LFBOT UV light curve thus far. In the first ∼45 days, AT 2024wpp radiated >1051erg, surpassing AT 2018cow by an order of magnitude and requiring a power source beyond the radioactive56Ni decay of traditional supernovae. Like AT 2018cow, the UV–optical spectrum of AT 2024wpp is dominated by a persistently blue thermal continuum throughout our monitoring, with blackbody parameters at a peak ofT > 30,000 K andRBB/t ≈ 0.2c–0.3c. We find evidence for cooling until ∼10 days; thereafter,T ≳ 20,000 K is maintained. We interpret the featureless spectra as a consequence of continuous energy injection from a central source of high-energy emission that maintains high ejecta ionization. After 35 days, faint (equivalent width (EW) ≲ 10 Å) H and He spectral features with kinematically separate velocity components centered at 0 and −6400 km s−1emerge, implying spherical symmetry deviations. A near-infrared excess of emission above the optical blackbody emerges between 20 and 30 days, with a power-law spectrumFν,NIR ∝ ν−0.3at 30 days. We interpret this distinct emission component as either reprocessing of early UV emission in a dust echo or free–free emission in an extended medium above the optical photosphere. LFBOT asphericity and multiple outflow components (including mildly relativistic ejecta), together with the large radiated energy, are naturally realized by super-Eddington accretion disks around neutron stars or black holes and their outflows.  more » « less

  1. Abstract We present the first deep X-ray observations of luminous fast blue optical transient (LFBOT) AT 2018cow at ∼3.7 yr since discovery, together with the reanalysis of the observation atδt∼ 220 days. X-ray emission is significantly detected at a location consistent with AT 2018cow. The very soft X-ray spectrum and sustained luminosity are distinct from the spectral and temporal behavior of the LFBOT in the first ∼100 days and would possibly signal the emergence of a new emission component, although a robust association with AT 2018cow can only be claimed atδt∼ 220 days, while atδt∼ 1350 days contamination of the host galaxy cannot be excluded. We interpret these findings in the context of the late-time panchromatic emission from AT 2018cow, which includes the detection of persistent, slowly fading UV emission withνLν≈ 1039erg s−1. Similar to previous works (and in analogy with arguments for ultraluminous X-ray sources), these late-time observations are consistent with thin disks around intermediate-mass black holes (withM≈ 103–104M) accreting at sub-Eddington rates. However, differently from previous studies, we find that smaller-mass black holes withM≈ 10–100Maccreting at ≳the Eddington rate cannot be ruled out and provide a natural explanation for the inferred compact size (Rout≈ 40R) of the accretion disk years after the optical flare. Most importantly, irrespective of the accretor mass, our study lends support to the hypothesis that LFBOTs are accretion-powered phenomena and that, specifically, LFBOTs constitute electromagnetic manifestations of super-Eddington accreting systems that evolve to ≲Eddington over a ≈100-day timescale.

  2. Abstract We present X-ray (0.3–79 keV) and radio (0.25–203 GHz) observations of the most luminous fast blue optical transient (LFBOT) AT 2024wpp atz= 0.0868, spanning 2–280 days after first light. AT 2024wpp shows luminous (LX≈ 1.5 × 1043erg s−1), variable X-ray emission with a Compton hump peaking atδt≈ 50 days. The X-ray spectrum evolves from a soft (Fν∝ν−0.6) to an extremely hard state (Fν∝ν1.26) accompanied by a rebrightening atδt≈ 50 days. The X-ray emission properties favor an embedded high-energy source shining through asymmetric expanding ejecta. We detect radio emission peaking atL9 GHz≈ 1.7 × 1029erg s−1Hz−1atδt≈ 73 days. The spectral evolution is unprecedented: the early millimeter fluxes rise nearly an order of magnitude duringδt≈ 17–32 days, followed by a decline in spectral peak fluxes. We model the radio emission as synchrotron radiation from an expanding blast wave interacting with a dense environment ( M ̇ 1 0 3 M yr 1 forvw= 1000 km s−1). The inferred outflow velocities increase from Γβc≈ 0.07cto 0.42cduringδt≈ 32–73 days, indicating an accelerating blast wave. We interpret these observations as a shock propagating through a dense shell of radius ≈1016cm and then accelerating into a steep density profileρCSM(r) ∝r−3.1. All radio-bright LFBOTs exhibit similar circumstellar medium (CSM) density profiles (ρCSM∝r−3), suggesting similar progenitor processes. The X-ray and radio properties favor a progenitor involving super-Eddington accretion onto a compact object launching mildly relativistic disk wind outflows.

  3. Abstract We present ultraviolet, optical, and near-infrared photometric and optical spectroscopic observations of the luminous fast blue optical transient (LFBOT) CSS 161010:045834–081803 (CSS 161010). The transient was found in a low-redshift (z= 0.033) dwarf galaxy. The light curves of CSS 161010 are characterized by an extremely fast evolution and blue colors. TheV-band light curve shows that CSS 161010 reaches an absolute peak of M V max = 20.66 ± 0.06 mag in 3.8 days from the start of the outburst. After maximum, CSS 161010 follows a power-law decline ∝t−2.8±0.1in all optical bands. These photometric properties are comparable to those of well-observed LFBOTs such as AT 2018cow, AT 2020mrf, and AT 2020xnd. However, unlike these objects, the spectra of CSS 161010 show a remarkable transformation from a blue and featureless continuum to spectra dominated by very broad, entirely blueshifted hydrogen emission lines with velocities of up to 10% of the speed of light. The persistent blueshifted emission and the lack of any emission at the rest wavelength of CSS 161010 are unique features not seen in any transient before CSS 161010. The combined observational properties of CSS 161010 and itsM*∼ 108Mdwarf galaxy host favor the tidal disruption of a star by an intermediate-mass black hole as its origin.

  4. Abstract We present deep X-ray and radio observations of the fast blue optical transient (FBOT) AT 2020xnd/ZTF 20acigmel at z = 0.2433 from 13 days to 269 days after explosion. AT 2020xnd belongs to the category of optically luminous FBOTs with similarities to the archetypal event AT 2018cow. AT 2020xnd shows luminous radio emission reaching L ν ≈ 8 × 10 29 erg s −1 Hz −1 at 20 GHz and 75 days post-explosion, accompanied by luminous and rapidly fading soft X-ray emission peaking at L X ≈ 6 × 10 42 erg s −1 . Interpreting the radio emission in the context of synchrotron radiation from the explosion’s shock interaction with the environment, we find that AT 2020xnd launched a high-velocity outflow ( v ∼ 0.1 c –0.2 c ) propagating into a dense circumstellar medium (effective M ̇ ≈ 10 − 3 M ⊙ yr −1 for an assumed wind velocity of v w = 1000 km s −1 ). Similar to AT 2018cow, the detected X-ray emission is in excess compared to the extrapolated synchrotron spectrum and constitutes a different emission component, possibly powered by accretion onto a newly formed black hole or neutron star. These properties make AT 2020xnd a high-redshift analog to AT 2018cow, and establish AT 2020xnd as the fourth member of the class of optically luminous FBOTs with luminous multiwavelength counterparts.

  5. ABSTRACT We present the discovery of ASASSN-18jd (AT 2018bcb), a luminous optical/ultraviolet(UV)/X-ray transient located in the nucleus of the galaxy 2MASX J22434289–1659083 at z = 0.1192. Over the year after discovery, Swift UltraViolet and Optical Telescope (UVOT) photometry shows the UV spectral energy distribution of the transient to be well modelled by a slowly shrinking blackbody with temperature $$T \sim 2.5 \times 10^{4} \, {\rm K}$$, a maximum observed luminosity of $$L_{\rm max} = 4.5^{+0.6}_{-0.3}\times 10^{44} \, {\rm erg \,s}^{-1}$$, and a radiated energy of $$E = 9.6^{+1.1}_{-0.6} \times 10^{51} \, {\rm erg}$$. X-ray data from Swift X-Ray Telescope (XRT) and XMM–Newton show a transient, variable X-ray flux with blackbody and power-law components that fade by nearly an order of magnitude over the following year. Optical spectra show strong, roughly constant broad Balmer emission and transient features attributable to He ii, N iii–v, O iii, and coronal Fe. While ASASSN-18jd shares similarities with tidal disruption events (TDEs), it is also similar to the newly discovered nuclear transients seen in quiescent galaxies and faint active galactic nuclei (AGNs).
