Abstract We report observations of the optical counterpart of the long gamma-ray burst (GRB) GRB 230812B and its associated supernova (SN) SN 2023pel. The proximity (z= 0.36) and high energy (Eγ,iso∼ 1053erg) make it an important event to study as a probe of the connection between massive star core collapse and relativistic jet formation. With a phenomenological power-law model for the optical afterglow, we find a late-time flattening consistent with the presence of an associated SN. SN 2023pel has an absolute peakr-band magnitude ofMr= −19.46 ± 0.18 mag (about as bright as SN 1998bw) and evolves on quicker timescales. Using a radioactive heating model, we derive a nickel mass powering the SN ofMNi= 0.38 ± 0.01M⊙and a peak bolometric luminosity ofLbol∼ 1.3 × 1043erg s−1. We confirm SN 2023pel’s classification as a broad-line Type Ic SN with a spectrum taken 15.5 days after its peak in therband and derive a photospheric expansion velocity ofvph= 11,300 ± 1600 km s−1at that phase. Extrapolating this velocity to the time of maximum light, we derive the ejecta massMej= 1.0 ± 0.6M⊙and kinetic energy . We find that GRB 230812B/SN 2023pel has SN properties that are mostly consistent with the overall GRB-SN population. The lack of correlations found in the GRB-SN population between SN brightness andEγ,isofor their associated GRBs across a broad range of 7 orders of magnitude provides further evidence that the central engine powering the relativistic ejecta is not coupled to the SN powering mechanism in GRB-SN systems.

The broad-lined type Ic supernova 2020lao experienced an energetic explosion with no central-engine signatures
We present infant-phase observations of the broad-line Type Ic supernova (SN Ic-BL) 2020lao, including optical spectroscopy beginning within about 48 hours of the inferred explosion epoch and extending to nearly 100 days. The explosion time was constrained by power-law fits to the rising TESS and ZTF light curves, with the first ZTF detection occurring only ∼27 hours after explosion. The optical light curves show a rapid rise that lasted for ≈8.8 days and a peak luminosity typical of SNe Ic-BL (i.e.,Mr ≃ −18.5 mag). Unlike some engine-driven SN Ic-BL events, the early light curve of SN 2020lao shows no evidence of an optical afterglow or excess emission, and the absence of any detectable shock–cooling component in the TESS and ZTF data constrains the progenitor to a compact Wolf-Rayet-like star whoseR★is less than or equal to a few times theR⊙, ruling out any extended envelope. The spectra resemble those of the X-ray-flash-associated SN 2006aj but with systematically higher expansion velocities. From Arnett-type fits to the bolometric light curve and measured Fe IIλ5169 line velocities, we infer a56Ni mass of 0.23 ± 0.03 M⊙, an ejecta mass (Mej) of 3.2 ± 0.8 M⊙, and a kinetic energy (EK) of ∼(23.1 ± 12.4)×1051erg, corresponding to a specific kinetic energy (EK/Mej) of ≈(7.2 ± 3.5)×1051ergM⊙−1. Spectral synthesis modeling broadly reproduces the photospheric-phase spectra of SN 2020lao and suggestsEK/Mej ≈ 4.9 × 1051ergM⊙−1. SN 2020lao and SN 2006aj synthesized comparable amounts of56Ni, yet SN 2020lao exhibitsEK/Mejvalues on the order of 5–10 times larger. Published VLA andSwift/XRT non-detections reveal no afterglow emission, allowing us to place stringent limits on relativistic ejecta and dense circumstellar material. Given that SN 2020lao reaches a specific kinetic energy typical of engine-driven SNe Ic-BL, the lack of an early optical excess together with the non-detections in the radio and X-ray bands suggests that if a relativistic jet was launched, the explosion must have been viewed far off axis or the jet was choked before breakout. If there was no relativistic jet, SN 2020lao would therefore be an extreme nonrelativistic SN Ic-BL. This underscores the importance of continued infant-phase, multiwavelength monitoring of these explosions.

Abstract With a small sample of fast X-ray transients (FXTs) with multiwavelength counterparts discovered to date, their progenitors and connections toγ-ray bursts (GRBs) and supernovae (SNe) remain ambiguous. Here, we present photometric and spectroscopic observations of SN 2025kg, the SN counterpart to the FXT EP 250108a. Atz= 0.17641, this is the closest known SN discovered following an Einstein Probe (EP) FXT. We show that SN 2025kg’s optical spectra reveal the hallmark features of a broad-lined Type Ic SN. Its light-curve evolution and expansion velocities are comparable to those of GRB-SNe, including SN 1998bw, and two past FXT-SNe. We present JWST/NIRSpec spectroscopy taken around SN 2025kg’s maximum light, and find weak absorption due to HeI1.0830μm and 2.0581μm and a broad, unidentified emission feature at ∼4–4.5μm. Further, we observe broadened Hαin optical data at 42.5 days that is not detected at other epochs, indicating interaction with H-rich material. From its light curve, we derive a56Ni mass of 0.2–0.6M⊙. Together with our companion Letter, our broadband data are consistent with a trapped or low-energy (≲1051erg) jet-driven explosion from a collapsar with a zero-age main-sequence mass of 15–30M⊙. Finally, we show that the sample of EP FXT-SNe supports past estimates that low-luminosity jets seen through FXTs are more common than successful (GRB) jets, and that similar FXT-like signatures are likely present in at least a few percent of the brightest Type Ic-BL SNe.more » « less

We present the photometric and spectroscopic analysis of five Type Ibn supernovae (SNe): SN 2020nxt, SN 2020taz, SN 2021bbv, SN 2023utc, and SN 2024aej. These events share key observational features and belong to a family of objects similar to the prototypical Type Ibn SN 2006jc. The SNe exhibit rise times of approximately 10 days and peak absolute magnitudes ranging from −16.5 to −19 mag. Notably, SN 2023utc is the faintest Type Ibn SN discovered to date, with an exceptionally lowr-band absolute magnitude of −16.4 mag. The pseudo-bolometric light curves peak at (1 − 10)×1042erg s−1, with total radiated energies on the order of (1 − 10)×1048erg. Spectroscopically, these SNe display a relatively slow spectral evolution. The early spectra are characterised by a hot blue continuum and prominent He Iemission lines. The early spectra also show blackbody temperatures exceeding 10 000 K, with a subsequent decline in temperature during later phases. Narrow He Ilines, which are indicative of unshocked circumstellar material (CSM), show velocities of approximately 1000 km s−1. The spectra suggest that the progenitors of these SNe underwent significant mass loss prior to the explosion, resulting in a He-rich CSM. Our light curve modelling yielded estimates for the ejecta mass (Mej) in the range 1 − 3 M⊙with kinetic energies (EKin) of (0.1 − 1)×1050erg. The inferred CSM mass ranges from 0.2 to 1 M⊙. These findings are consistent with expectations for core collapse events arising from relatively massive envelope-stripped progenitors.more » « less

Abstract We present extensive optical photometry of the afterglow of GRB 221009A. Our data cover 0.9–59.9 days from the time of Swift and Fermi gamma-ray burst (GRB) detections. Photometry in rizy -band filters was collected primarily with Pan-STARRS and supplemented by multiple 1–4 m imaging facilities. We analyzed the Swift X-ray data of the afterglow and found a single decline rate power law f ( t ) ∝ t −1.556±0.002 best describes the light curve. In addition to the high foreground Milky Way dust extinction along this line of sight, the data favor additional extinction to consistently model the optical to X-ray flux with optically thin synchrotron emission. We fit the X-ray-derived power law to the optical light curve and find good agreement with the measured data up to 5−6 days. Thereafter we find a flux excess in the riy bands that peaks in the observer frame at ∼20 days. This excess shares similar light-curve profiles to the Type Ic broad-lined supernovae SN 2016jca and SN 2017iuk once corrected for the GRB redshift of z = 0.151 and arbitrarily scaled. This may be representative of an SN emerging from the declining afterglow. We measure rest-frame absolute peak AB magnitudes of M g = −19.8 ± 0.6 and M r = − 19.4 ± 0.3 and M z = −20.1 ± 0.3. If this is an SN component, then Bayesian modeling of the excess flux would imply explosion parameters of M ej = 7.1 − 1.7 + 2.4 M ⊙ , M Ni = 1.0 − 0.4 + 0.6 M ⊙ , and v ej = 33,900 − 5700 + 5900 km s −1 , for the ejecta mass, nickel mass, and ejecta velocity respectively, inferring an explosion energy of E kin ≃ 2.6–9.0 × 10 52 erg.more » « less

Abstract GRB 221009A is one of the brightest transients ever observed, with the highest peak gamma-ray flux for a gamma-ray burst (GRB). A Type Ic-BL supernova (SN), SN 2022xiw, was definitively detected in late-time JWST spectroscopy (t= 195 days, observer frame). However, photometric studies have found SN 2022xiw to be less luminous (10%−70%) than the canonical GRB-SN, SN 1998bw. We present late-time Hubble Space Telescope (HST)/WFC3 and JWST/NIRCam imaging of the afterglow and host galaxy of GRB 221009A att∼185, 277, and 345 days post-trigger. Our joint archival ground, HST, and JWST light-curve fits show strong support for a break in the light-curve decay slope att= 50 ± 10 days (observer frame) and a SN at <1.5× the optical/near-IR flux of SN 1998bw. This break is consistent with an interpretation as a jet break when requiring slow-cooling electrons in a wind medium with an electron energy spectral indexp> 2 andνm<νc. Our light curves and joint HST/JWST spectral energy distribution (SED) also show evidence for the late-time emergence of a bluer component in addition to the fading afterglow and SN. We find consistency with the interpretations that this source is either a young, massive, low-metallicity star cluster or a scattered-light echo of the afterglow with a SED shape offν∝ν2.0±1.0.more » « less
