Title: Ammonia reactivity with ferriotetrylenes: a structural snapshot of a highly dynamic process
We report the reactivity of NH3with ferrioplumbyl- and ferriostannylene complexes. DFT analysis of the Sn system describes a mechanism of reactivity and X-ray analysis shows a long Sn–N bond, giving a structural snapshot into its reversible nature.  more » « less

  1. Abstract Improving control over active‐site reactivity is a grand challenge in catalysis. Single‐atom alloys (SAAs) consisting of a reactive component doped as single atoms into a more inert host metal feature localized and well‐defined active sites, but fine tuning their properties is challenging. Here, a framework is developed for tuning single‐atom site reactivity by alloying in an additional inert metal, which this work terms an alloy‐host SAA. Specifically, this work creates about 5% Pd single‐atom sites in a Pd33Ag67(111) single crystal surface, and then identifies Sn based on computational screening as a suitable third metal to introduce. Subsequent experimental studies show that introducing Sn indeed modifies the electronic structure and chemical reactivity (measured by CO desorption energies) of the Pd sites. The modifications to both the electronic structure and the CO adsorption energies are in close agreement with the calculations. These results indicate that the use of an alloy host environment to modify the reactivity of single‐atom sites can allow fine‐tuning of catalytic performance and boost resistance against strong‐binding adsorbates such as CO.

  2. We present the analysis of the luminous Type II Supernova (SN) 2021tsz, which exploded in a low-luminosity galaxy. It reached a peak magnitude of −18.88 ± 0.13 mag in therband and exhibited an initial rapid decline of 4.05 ± 0.14 mag (100 d)−1from peak luminosity till ∼30 d. The photospheric phase is short, with the SN displaying bluer colours and a weak Hαabsorption component–features consistent with other luminous, short-photospheric phase Type II SNe. A distinct transition from the photospheric to the radioactive tail phase in theVband–as is common in hydrogen-rich Type II SNe–is not visible in SN 2021tsz, although a modest ∼1 mag drop is apparent in the redder filters. Hydrodynamic modelling suggests the luminosity is powered by ejecta-circumstellar material (CSM) interaction during the early phases (< 30 days). Interaction with 0.6 Mof dense CSM extending to 3100 Rreproduces the observed luminosity, with an explosion energy of 1.3 × 1051erg. The modelling indicates a pre-SN mass of 9 M, which includes a hydrogen envelope of 4 M, and a radius of ∼1000 R. Spectral energy distribution analysis and strong-line diagnostics revealed that the host galaxy of SN 2021tsz is a low-metallicity, dwarf galaxy. The low-metallicity environment and the derived high mass loss from the hydrodynamical modelling strongly support a binary progenitor system for SN 2021tsz.

  3. Abstract We present optical and near-infrared (NIR) observations of SN 2022crv, a stripped-envelope supernova in NGC 3054, discovered within 12 hr of explosion by the Distance Less Than 40 Mpc Survey. We suggest that SN 2022crv is a transitional object on the continuum between Type Ib supernovae (SNe Ib) and Type IIb supernovae (SNe IIb). A high-velocity hydrogen feature (∼ −20,000 to −16,000 km s−1) was conspicuous in SN 2022crv at early phases, and then quickly disappeared. We find that a hydrogen envelope of ∼10−3Mcan reproduce the observed behavior of the hydrogen feature. The lack of early envelope cooling emission implies that SN 2022crv had a compact progenitor with an extremely low amount of hydrogen. A nebular spectral analysis shows that SN 2022crv is consistent with the explosion of a He star with a final mass of ∼4.5–5.6Mthat evolved from a ∼16 to 22Mzero-age main-sequence star in a binary system with ∼1.0–1.7Mof oxygen finally synthesized in the core. In order to retain such a small amount of hydrogen, the initial orbital separation of the binary system is likely larger than ∼1000R. The NIR spectra of SN 2022crv show a unique absorption feature on the blue side of the Heiline at ∼1.005μm. This is the first time such a feature has been observed in SNe Ib/IIb, and it could be due to Sr II. Further detailed modeling of SN 2022crv can shed light on the progenitor and the origin of the mysterious absorption feature in the NIR.

  4. In this paper, we present an extensive analysis of SN 2021 wuf, a transition between Ia-norm and SN 1991T-like supernovae, which exploded at the periphery of the tidal bridge between the pair galaxy NGC 6500 and NGC 6501, at a redshift ofz = 0.01. Our observations, ranging from −21 to +276 days relative to theB-band maximum light, reveal that SN 2021wuf exhibits properties akin to normal SNe Ia, with a peak absolute magnitude ofMmax(B)  ∼   − 19.49  ±  0.10 mag and a post-peak decline rate of Δm15(B)  ∼  1.11  ±  0.06 mag. The peak bolometric luminosity of this SN is estimated as 1.58  × 1043erg s−1, corresponding to a56Ni mass ofMNi  ∼  0.64  ±  0.05 M. The spectral features, including high-velocity Si IIλ6355 lines, a plateau in the Si IIλ6355 velocity evolution and the nickel-to-iron ratio in the nebular phase, suggest a potential pulsating delayed detonation mechanism. The absence of intermediate-mass elements in the early phase and the high photospheric temperature, as inferred from the line-strength ratio of Si IIλ5972 to Si IIλ6355 (named asR(Si II)), further support this classification.

  5. We present the photometric and spectroscopic analysis of five Type Ibn supernovae (SNe): SN 2020nxt, SN 2020taz, SN 2021bbv, SN 2023utc, and SN 2024aej. These events share key observational features and belong to a family of objects similar to the prototypical Type Ibn SN 2006jc. The SNe exhibit rise times of approximately 10 days and peak absolute magnitudes ranging from −16.5 to −19 mag. Notably, SN 2023utc is the faintest Type Ibn SN discovered to date, with an exceptionally lowr-band absolute magnitude of −16.4 mag. The pseudo-bolometric light curves peak at (1 − 10)×1042erg s−1, with total radiated energies on the order of (1 − 10)×1048erg. Spectroscopically, these SNe display a relatively slow spectral evolution. The early spectra are characterised by a hot blue continuum and prominent He Iemission lines. The early spectra also show blackbody temperatures exceeding 10 000 K, with a subsequent decline in temperature during later phases. Narrow He Ilines, which are indicative of unshocked circumstellar material (CSM), show velocities of approximately 1000 km s−1. The spectra suggest that the progenitors of these SNe underwent significant mass loss prior to the explosion, resulting in a He-rich CSM. Our light curve modelling yielded estimates for the ejecta mass (Mej) in the range 1 − 3 Mwith kinetic energies (EKin) of (0.1 − 1)×1050erg. The inferred CSM mass ranges from 0.2 to 1 M. These findings are consistent with expectations for core collapse events arising from relatively massive envelope-stripped progenitors.
