Title: D0 -meson-tagged jet axes difference in proton-proton collisions at s=5.02  TeV
Heavy-flavor quarks produced in proton-proton (pp) collisions provide a unique opportunity to investigate the evolution of quark-initiated parton showers from initial hard scatterings to final-state hadrons. By examining jets that contain heavy-flavor hadrons, this study explores the effects of both perturbative and nonperturbative QCD on jet formation and structure. The angular differences between various jet axes, Δ R axis , offer insight into the radiation patterns and fragmentation of charm quarks. The first measurement of D 0 -tagged jet axes differences in pp collisions at s = 5.02 TeV by the ALICE experiment at the LHC is presented for jets with transverse momentum p T ch jet 10 GeV / c and D 0 mesons with p T D 0 5 GeV / c . In this D 0 -meson-tagged jet measurement, three jet axis definitions, each with different sensitivities to soft, wide-angle radiation, are used: the standard axis, soft drop groomed axis, and winner-takes-all axis. Measurements of the radial distributions of D 0 mesons with respect to the jet axes, Δ R axis D 0 , are reported, along with the angle, Δ R axis , between the three jet axes. The D 0 meson emerges as the leading particle in these jets, closely aligning with the winner-takes-all axis and diverging from the standard jet axis. The results also examine how varying the sensitivity to soft radiation with grooming influences the orientation of the soft drop jet axis and uncover that charm-jet structure is more likely to survive grooming when the soft drop axis is further from the D 0 direction, providing further evidence of the dead-cone effect recently measured by ALICE.  more » « less

  1. The production yields of the orbitally excited charm-strange mesons D s 1 ( 1 + ) ( 2536 ) + and D s 2 * ( 2 + ) ( 2573 ) + were measured for the first time in proton-proton (pp) collisions at a center-of-mass energy of s = 13 TeV with the ALICE experiment at the LHC. The D s 1 + and D s 2 * + mesons were measured at midrapidity ( | y | < 0.5 ) in minimum-bias and high-multiplicity pp collisions in the transverse-momentum interval 2 < p T < 24 GeV / c . Their production yields relative to the D s + ground-state yield were found to be compatible between minimum-bias and high-multiplicity collisions, as well as with previous measurements in e ± p and e + e collisions. The measured D s 1 + / D s + and D s 2 * + / D s + yield ratios are described by statistical hadronization models and can be used to tune the parameters governing the production of excited charm-strange hadrons in Monte Carlo generators, such as 8.

  2. A search for collective effects inside jets produced in proton-proton collisions is performed via correlation measurements of charged particles using the CMS detector at the CERN LHC. The analysis uses data collected at a center-of-mass energy of s = 13 TeV , corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 138 fb 1 . Jets are reconstructed with the anti- k T algorithm with a distance parameter of 0.8 and are required to have transverse momentum greater than 550 GeV and pseudorapidity | η jet | < 1.6 . Two-particle correlations among the charged particles within the jets are studied as functions of the particles’ azimuthal angle and pseudorapidity separations ( Δ ϕ * and Δ η * ) in a jet coordinate basis, where particles’ η * , ϕ * are defined relative to the direction of the jet. The correlation functions are studied in classes of in-jet charged-particle multiplicity up to N ch j 100 . Fourier harmonics are extracted from long-range azimuthal correlation functions to characterize azimuthal anisotropy for | Δ η * | > 2 . For low- N ch j jets, the long-range elliptic anisotropic harmonic, v 2 * , is observed to decrease with N ch j . This trend is well described by Monte Carlo event generators. However, a rising trend for v 2 * emerges at N ch j 80 , hinting at a possible onset of collective behavior, which is not reproduced by the models tested. This observation yields new insights into the dynamics of jet evolution in the vacuum. © 2024 CERN, for the CMS Collaboration2024CERN

  3. The Ξ b 0 ( ) Ξ c ( 3055 ) + ( 0 ) ( D + ( 0 ) Λ ) π decay chains are observed, and the spin-parity of Ξ c ( 3055 ) + ( 0 ) baryons is determined for the first time. The measurement is performed using proton-proton collision data at a center-of-mass energy of s = 13 TeV , corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 5.4 fb 1 , recorded by the LHCb experiment between 2016 and 2018. The spin-parity of the Ξ c ( 3055 ) + ( 0 ) baryons is determined to be 3 / 2 + with a significance of more than 6.5 σ ( 3.5 σ ) compared to all other tested hypotheses. The up-down asymmetries of the Ξ b 0 ( ) Ξ c ( 3055 ) + ( 0 ) π transitions are measured to be 0.92 ± 0.10 ± 0.05 ( 0.92 ± 0.16 ± 0.22 ), consistent with maximal parity violation, where the first uncertainty is statistical and the second is systematic. These results support the hypothesis that the Ξ c ( 3055 ) + ( 0 ) baryons correspond to the first D -wave λ -mode excitation of the Ξ c flavor triplet. © 2025 CERN, for the LHCb Collaboration2025CERN

  4. The first observation of the decay Ξ b ψ ( 2 S ) Ξ and measurement of the branching ratio of Ξ b ψ ( 2 S ) Ξ to Ξ b J / ψ Ξ are presented. The J / ψ and ψ ( 2 S ) mesons are reconstructed using their dimuon decay modes. The results are based on proton-proton colliding beam data from the LHC collected by the CMS experiment at s = 13 TeV in 2016–2018, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 140 fb 1 . The branching fraction ratio is measured to be B ( Ξ b ψ ( 2 S ) Ξ ) / B ( Ξ b J / ψ Ξ ) = 0.8 4 0.19 + 0.21 ( stat ) ± 0.10 ( syst ) ± 0.02 ( B ) , where the last uncertainty comes from the uncertainties in the branching fractions of the charmonium states. New measurements of the Ξ b ( 5945 ) 0 baryon mass and natural width are also presented, using the Ξ b π + final state, where the Ξ b baryon is reconstructed through the decays J / ψ Ξ , ψ ( 2 S ) Ξ , J / ψ Λ K , and J / ψ Σ 0 K . Finally, the fraction of Ξ b baryons produced from Ξ b ( 5945 ) 0 decays is determined. © 2024 CERN, for the CMS Collaboration2024CERN

  5. A study of Λ b 0 and Ξ b 0 decays to Λ h + h ( h ( ) = π , K ) is performed using p p collision data collected by the LHCb experiment during LHC Runs 1–2, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 9 fb 1 . The branching fractions for these decays are measured using the Λ b 0 Λ c + ( Λ π + ) π decay as a control channel. The decays Λ b 0 Λ π + π and Ξ b 0 Λ K π + are observed for the first time. For decay modes with sufficient signal yields, C P asymmetries are measured in the full and localized regions of the final-state phase space. Evidence is found for C P violation in the Λ b 0 Λ K + K decay, interpreted as originating primarily from an asymmetric Λ b 0 N * + K decay amplitude. The measured C P asymmetries for other decays are compatible with zero. © 2025 CERN, for the LHCb Collaboration2025CERN
