Title: Measurement of ω meson production in pp and p -Pb collisions at sNN=5.02 TeV
We present the measurement of the p T -differential production cross section of ω mesons in and p -Pb collisions at s N N = 5.02 TeV at midrapidity by ALICE. In addition, the first measurement of the nuclear modification factor R p Pb for ω mesons at LHC energies is presented, complementing the existing measurements of lighter neutral mesons such as the π 0 and η . Within the measured p T range, the R p Pb of ω mesons is compatible with no cold nuclear matter effects within the uncertainties, consistent with previous measurements at lower energies. The ω / π 0 ratio is presented for both collision systems, showing no collision system dependence within the uncertainties. The comparison to previously published ω / π 0 ratios at lower and higher collision energies in collisions suggests a decreasing trend of the ratio above p T = 4 GeV/ c with increasing collision energy. The data in both collision systems are compared to predictions from PYTHIA 8, EPOS LHC, and DPMJET event generators, revealing significant shortcomings in these models’ ability to describe the production of ω mesons.  more » « less

  1. The ALICE Collaboration reports measurements of the semi-inclusive distribution of charged-particle jets recoiling from a high transverse momentum (high p T ) charged hadron, in p p and central Pb-Pb collisions at center-of-mass energy per nucleon–nucleon collision s NN = 5.02 TeV. The large uncorrelated background in central Pb-Pb collisions is corrected using a data-driven statistical approach which enables precise measurement of recoil jet distributions over a broad range in p T , ch jet and jet resolution parameter R . Recoil jet yields are reported for R = 0.2 , 0.4, and 0.5 in the range 7 < p T , ch jet < 140   GeV / c and π / 2 < Δ φ < π , where Δ φ is the azimuthal angular separation between hadron trigger and recoil jet. The low- p T , ch jet reach of the measurement explores unique phase space for studying jet quenching, the interaction of jets with the quark–gluon plasma generated in high-energy nuclear collisions. Comparison of p T , ch jet distributions from p p and central Pb-Pb collisions probes medium-induced jet energy loss and intra-jet broadening, while comparison of their acoplanarity distributions explores in-medium jet scattering and medium response. The measurements are compared to theoretical calculations incorporating jet quenching. ©2024 CERN, for the ALICE Collaboration2024CERN

  2. The ALICE Collaboration reports the measurement of semi-inclusive distributions of charged-particle jets recoiling from a high transverse momentum (high p T ) hadron trigger in proton-proton and central Pb-Pb collisions at s NN = 5.02 TeV . A data-driven statistical method is used to mitigate the large uncorrelated background in central Pb-Pb collisions. Recoil jet distributions are reported for jet resolution parameter R = 0.2 , 0.4, and 0.5 in the range 7 < p T , jet < 140 GeV / c and trigger-recoil jet azimuthal separation π / 2 < Δ φ < π . The measurements exhibit a marked medium-induced jet yield enhancement at low p T and at large azimuthal deviation from Δ φ π . The enhancement is characterized by its dependence on Δ φ , which has a slope that differs from zero by 4.7 σ . Comparisons to model calculations incorporating different formulations of jet quenching are reported. These comparisons indicate that the observed yield enhancement arises from the response of the QGP medium to jet propagation. © 2024 CERN, for the ALICE Collaboration2024CERN

  3. Heavy-flavor quarks produced in proton-proton (pp) collisions provide a unique opportunity to investigate the evolution of quark-initiated parton showers from initial hard scatterings to final-state hadrons. By examining jets that contain heavy-flavor hadrons, this study explores the effects of both perturbative and nonperturbative QCD on jet formation and structure. The angular differences between various jet axes, Δ R axis , offer insight into the radiation patterns and fragmentation of charm quarks. The first measurement of D 0 -tagged jet axes differences in pp collisions at s = 5.02 TeV by the ALICE experiment at the LHC is presented for jets with transverse momentum p T ch jet 10 GeV / c and D 0 mesons with p T D 0 5 GeV / c . In this D 0 -meson-tagged jet measurement, three jet axis definitions, each with different sensitivities to soft, wide-angle radiation, are used: the standard axis, soft drop groomed axis, and winner-takes-all axis. Measurements of the radial distributions of D 0 mesons with respect to the jet axes, Δ R axis D 0 , are reported, along with the angle, Δ R axis , between the three jet axes. The D 0 meson emerges as the leading particle in these jets, closely aligning with the winner-takes-all axis and diverging from the standard jet axis. The results also examine how varying the sensitivity to soft radiation with grooming influences the orientation of the soft drop jet axis and uncover that charm-jet structure is more likely to survive grooming when the soft drop axis is further from the D 0 direction, providing further evidence of the dead-cone effect recently measured by ALICE.

  4. The STAR experiment reports new, high-precision measurements of the transverse single-spin asymmetries for π ± within jets, namely the Collins asymmetries, from transversely polarized p p collisions at s = 510 GeV . The energy-scaled distribution of jet transverse momentum, x T = 2 p T , jet / s , shows a remarkable consistency for Collins asymmetries of π ± in jets between s = 200 GeV and 510 GeV. This indicates that the Collins asymmetries are nearly energy independent, with, at most, a very weak scale dependence in p p collisions. These results extend to high-momentum scales ( Q 2 3400 GeV 2 ) and enable unique tests of evolution and universality in the transverse-momentum-dependent formalism, thus providing important constraints for the Collins fragmentation functions.

  5. The inclusive production of the charm-strange baryon Ω c 0 is measured for the first time via its semileptonic decay into Ω e + ν e at midrapidity ( | y | < 0.8 ) in proton-proton (pp) collisions at the center-of-mass energy s = 13 TeV with the ALICE detector at the LHC. The transverse momentum ( p T ) differential cross section multiplied by the branching ratio is presented in the interval 2 < p T < 12 GeV / c . The branching-fraction ratio BR ( Ω c 0 Ω e + ν e ) / BR ( Ω c 0 Ω π + ) is measured to be 1.12 ± 0.22 (stat) ± 0.27 (syst). Comparisons with other experimental measurements, as well as with theoretical calculations, are presented. © 2024 CERN, for the ALICE Collaboration2024CERN
