Title: Multidimensional measurements of beam single-spin asymmetries in semi-inclusive deep-inelastic charged-kaon electroproduction off protons in the valence region
Measurements of beam single-spin asymmetries in semi-inclusive deep-inelastic electron scattering (SIDIS) with positively charged kaons off protons have been performed with 10.6 and 10.2 GeV incident electron beams using the CLAS12 spectrometer at Jefferson Lab. We report an analysis of the electroproduction of positively charged kaons over a large kinematic range of fractional energy, Bjorken x , transverse momentum, and photon virtualities Q 2 ranging from 1 GeV 2 up to 6 GeV 2 . This is the first published multidimensionally binned CLAS12 measurement of a kaon SIDIS single-spin asymmetry in the valence quark regime. The data provide constraints on the structure function ratio F L U sin ϕ / F U U , where F L U sin ϕ is a quantity with a leading twist of twist-3 that can reveal novel aspects of the quark-gluon correlations within the nucleon. The impact of the data on understanding the underlying reaction mechanisms and their kinematic variation is explored using theoretical models for the different contributing twist-3 parton-distribution functions (PDFs) and fragmentation functions (FFs).  more » « less

  1. Measurements of semi-inclusive deep-inelastic scattering multiplicities for π + and π from proton and deuteron targets are reported on a grid of hadron kinematic variables z ,   P T , and ϕ * for leptonic kinematic variables in the range 0.3 < x < 0.6 and 3 < Q 2 < 5 GeV 2 . Data were acquired in 2018 and 2019 at Jefferson Lab Hall C with a 10.6 GeV electron beam impinging on 10-cm-long liquid hydrogen and deuterium targets. Scattered electrons and charged pions were detected in the High Momentum Spectrometer and Super High Momentum Spectrometer, respectively. The multiplicities were fitted for each bin in ( x , Q 2 , z , P t ) to extract the ϕ * —independent M 0 and the azimuthal modulations cos ( ϕ * ) and cos ( 2 ϕ * ) . The P t dependence of the M 0 results was found to be remarkably consistent for the four cases studied: e p e π + X ,   e p e π X ,   e d e π + X ,   e d e π X over the range 0 GeV < P t < 0.4 GeV , as were the multiplicities evaluated near ϕ * = 180 over the extended range 0 GeV < P t < 0.7 GeV . The Gaussian widths of the P t dependence exhibit a quadratic increase with z . The cos ( ϕ * ) modulations were found to be consistent with zero for π + , in agreement with previous world data, while the π moments were, in many cases, significantly greater than zero. The cos ( 2 ϕ * ) modulations were found to be consistent with zero. The higher statistical precision of this dataset of about 20 000 individual multiplicity values, compared with previously published data, should allow improved determinations of quark transverse momentum distributions and higher twist contributions.

  2. Abstract A model based on a$$U(1)_{T^3_R}$$ U ( 1 ) T R 3 extension of the Standard Model can address the mass hierarchy between generations of fermions, explain thermal dark matter abundance, and the muon$$g - 2$$ g - 2 ,$$R_{(D)}$$ R ( D ) , and$$R_{(D^*)}$$ R ( D ) anomalies. The model contains a light scalar boson$$\phi '$$ ϕ and a heavy vector-like quark$$\chi _\textrm{u}$$ χ u that can be probed at CERN’s large hadron collider (LHC). We perform a phenomenology study on the production of$$\phi '$$ ϕ and$${\chi }_u$$ χ u particles from proton–proton$$(\textrm{pp})$$ ( pp ) collisions at the LHC at$$\sqrt{s}=13.6$$ s = 13.6 TeV, primarily through$$g{-g}$$ g - g and$$t{-\chi _\textrm{u}}$$ t - χ u fusion. We work under a simplified model approach and directly take the$$\chi _\textrm{u}$$ χ u and$$\phi '$$ ϕ masses as free parameters. We perform a phenomenological analysis considering$$\chi _\textrm{u}$$ χ u final states to b-quarks, muons, and neutrinos, and$$\phi '$$ ϕ decays to$$\mu ^+\mu ^-$$ μ + μ - . A machine learning algorithm is used to maximize the signal sensitivity, considering an integrated luminosity of 3000$$\text {fb}^{-1}$$ fb - 1 . The proposed methodology can be a key mode for discovery over a large mass range, including low masses, traditionally considered difficult due to experimental constraints.

  3. K + K pairs may be produced in photonuclear collisions, either from the decays of photoproduced ϕ ( 1020 ) mesons or directly as nonresonant K + K pairs. Measurements of K + K photoproduction probe the couplings between the ϕ ( 1020 ) and charged kaons with photons and nuclear targets. The kaon-proton scattering occurs at energies far above those available elsewhere. We present the first measurement of coherent photoproduction of K + K pairs on lead ions in ultraperipheral collisions using the ALICE detector, including the first investigation of direct K + K production. There is significant K + K production at low transverse momentum, consistent with coherent photoproduction on lead targets. In the mass range 1.1 < M K K < 1.4 GeV / c 2 above the ϕ ( 1020 ) resonance, for rapidity | y K K | < 0.8 and p T , K K < 0.1 GeV / c , the measured coherent photoproduction cross section is d σ / d y = 3.37 ± 0.61 ( stat ) ± 0.15 ( syst ) mb . The center-of-mass energy per nucleon of the photon-nucleus (Pb) system W γ Pb , n ranges from 33 to 188 GeV, far higher than previous measurements on heavy-nucleus targets. The cross section is larger than expected for ϕ ( 1020 ) photoproduction alone. The mass spectrum is fit to a cocktail consisting of ϕ ( 1020 ) decays, direct K + K photoproduction, and interference between the two. The confidence regions for the amplitude and relative phase angle for direct K + K photoproduction are presented. © 2024 CERN, for the ALICE Collaboration2024CERN

  4. We report measurements of production cross sections for ρ + , ρ 0 , ω , K * + , K * 0 , ϕ , η , K S 0 , f 0 ( 980 ) , D + , D 0 , D s + , D * + , D * 0 , and D s * + in e + e collisions at a center-of-mass energy near 10.58 GeV. The data were recorded by the Belle experiment, consisting of 571 fb 1 at 10.58 GeV and 74 fb 1 at 10.52 GeV. Production cross sections are extracted as a function of the fractional hadron momentum x p . The measurements are compared to Monte Carlo generator predictions with various fragmentation settings, including those that have increased fragmentation into vector mesons over pseudoscalar mesons. The cross sections measured for light hadrons are consistent with no additional increase of vector over pseudoscalar mesons. The charmed-meson cross sections are compared to earlier measurements—when available—including older Belle results, which they supersede. They are in agreement before application of an improved initial-state radiation correction procedure that causes slight changes in their x p shapes. Published by the American Physical Society2025

  5. A search for collective effects inside jets produced in proton-proton collisions is performed via correlation measurements of charged particles using the CMS detector at the CERN LHC. The analysis uses data collected at a center-of-mass energy of s = 13 TeV , corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 138 fb 1 . Jets are reconstructed with the anti- k T algorithm with a distance parameter of 0.8 and are required to have transverse momentum greater than 550 GeV and pseudorapidity | η jet | < 1.6 . Two-particle correlations among the charged particles within the jets are studied as functions of the particles’ azimuthal angle and pseudorapidity separations ( Δ ϕ * and Δ η * ) in a jet coordinate basis, where particles’ η * , ϕ * are defined relative to the direction of the jet. The correlation functions are studied in classes of in-jet charged-particle multiplicity up to N ch j 100 . Fourier harmonics are extracted from long-range azimuthal correlation functions to characterize azimuthal anisotropy for | Δ η * | > 2 . For low- N ch j jets, the long-range elliptic anisotropic harmonic, v 2 * , is observed to decrease with N ch j . This trend is well described by Monte Carlo event generators. However, a rising trend for v 2 * emerges at N ch j 80 , hinting at a possible onset of collective behavior, which is not reproduced by the models tested. This observation yields new insights into the dynamics of jet evolution in the vacuum. © 2024 CERN, for the CMS Collaboration2024CERN
