Title: Baryon–antibaryon photoproduction cross sections off the proton
The experiment at Jefferson Lab has observed p p ¯ and, for the first time, Λ Λ ¯ and p Λ ¯ photoproduction from a proton target at photon energies up to 11.6 GeV. The angular distributions are forward peaked for all produced pairs, consistent with Regge-like t -channel exchange. Asymmetric wide-angle antibaryon distributions show the presence of additional processes. In a phenomenological model, we find consistency with a double- t -channel exchange process where antibaryons are created only at the middle vertex. The model matches all observed distributions with a small number of free parameters. In the hyperon channels, we observe a clear distinction between photoproduction of the Λ Λ ¯ and p Λ ¯ systems but general similarity to the p p ¯ system. We report both total cross sections and cross sections differential with respect to momentum transfer and the invariant masses of the created particle pairs. No narrow resonant structures were found in these reaction channels. The suppression of s s ¯ quark pairs relative to d d ¯ quark pairs is similar to what has been seen in other reactions.  more » « less

  1. Abstract Entanglement is an intrinsic property of quantum mechanics and is predicted to be exhibited in the particles produced at the Large Hadron Collider. A measurement of the extent of entanglement in top quark-antiquark ( t t ¯ ) events produced in proton–proton collisions at a center-of-mass energy of 13 TeV is performed with the data recorded by the CMS experiment at the CERN LHC in 2016, and corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 36.3 fb−1. The events are selected based on the presence of two leptons with opposite charges and high transverse momentum. An entanglement-sensitive observableDis derived from the top quark spin-dependent parts of the t t ¯ production density matrix and measured in the region of the t t ¯ production threshold. Values of D < 1 / 3 are evidence of entanglement andDis observed (expected) to be 0.480 0.029 + 0.026 ( 0.467 0.029 + 0.026 ) at the parton level. With an observed significance of 5.1 standard deviations with respect to the non-entangled hypothesis, this provides observation of quantum mechanical entanglement within t t ¯ pairs in this phase space. This measurement provides a new probe of quantum mechanics at the highest energies ever produced.

  2. Abstract A search for resonances in top quark pair ( t t ) production in final states with two charged leptons and multiple jets is presented, based on proton–proton collision data collected by the CMS experiment at the CERN LHC at s = 13 TeV , corresponding to 138 fb−1. The analysis explores the invariant mass of the t t system and two angular observables that provide direct access to the correlation of top quark and antiquark spins. A significant excess of events is observed near the kinematic t t threshold compared to the non-resonant production predicted by fixed-order perturbative quantum chromodynamics (pQCD). The observed enhancement is consistent with the production of a color-singlet pseudoscalar ( 1 S 0 [ 1 ] ) quasi-bound toponium state, as predicted by non-relativistic quantum chromodynamics. Using a simplified model for 1 S 0 [ 1 ] toponium, the cross section of the excess above the pQCD prediction is measured to be 8.8 1.4 + 1.2 pb

  3. Abstract Measurements of inclusive and normalized differential cross sections of the associated production of top quark-antiquark and bottom quark-antiquark pairs,$$ \textrm{t}\overline{\textrm{t}}\textrm{b}\overline{\textrm{b}} $$ t t ¯ b b ¯ , are presented. The results are based on data from proton-proton collisions collected by the CMS detector at a centre-of-mass energy of 13 TeV, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 138 fb−1. The cross sections are measured in the lepton+jets decay channel of the top quark pair, using events containing exactly one isolated electron or muon and at least five jets. Measurements are made in four fiducial phase space regions, targeting different aspects of the$$ \textrm{t}\overline{\textrm{t}}\textrm{b}\overline{\textrm{b}} $$ t t ¯ b b ¯ process. Distributions are unfolded to the particle level through maximum likelihood fits, and compared with predictions from several event generators. The inclusive cross section measurements of this process in the fiducial phase space regions are the most precise to date. In most cases, the measured inclusive cross sections exceed the predictions with the chosen generator settings. The only exception is when using a particular choice of dynamic renormalization scale,$$ {\mu}_{\textrm{R}}=\frac{1}{2}{\prod}_{i=\textrm{t},\overline{\textrm{t}},\textrm{b},\overline{\textrm{b}}}{m}_{\textrm{T},i}^{1/4} $$ μ R = 1 2 i = t , t ¯ , b , b ¯ m T , i 1 / 4 , where$$ {m}_{\textrm{T},i}^2={m}_i^2+{p}_{\textrm{T},i}^2 $$ m T , i 2 = m i 2 + p T , i 2 are the transverse masses of top and bottom quarks. The differential cross sections show varying degrees of compatibility with the theoretical predictions, and none of the tested generators with the chosen settings simultaneously describe all the measured distributions.

  4. A search for hidden-charm pentaquark states decaying to a range of Σ c D ¯ and Λ c + D ¯ final states, as well as doubly charmed pentaquark states to Σ c D and Λ c + D , is made using samples of proton-proton collision data corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 5.7 fb 1 recorded by the LHCb detector at s = 13 TeV . Since no significant signals are found, upper limits are set on the pentaquark yields relative to that of the Λ c + baryon in the Λ c + p K π + decay mode. The known pentaquark states are also investigated, and their signal yields are found to be consistent with zero in all cases. © 2024 CERN, for the LHCb Collaboration2024CERN

  5. Measurements of the p T -dependent flow vector fluctuations in Pb–Pb collisions at s NN = 5.02 TeV using azimuthal correlations with the ALICE experiment at the Large Hadron Collider are presented. A four-particle correlation approach [ALICE Collaboration, ] is used to quantify the effects of flow angle and magnitude fluctuations separately. This paper extends previous studies to additional centrality intervals and provides measurements of the p T -dependent flow vector fluctuations at s NN = 5.02 TeV with two-particle correlations. Significant p T -dependent fluctuations of the V 2 flow vector in Pb–Pb collisions are found across different centrality ranges, with the largest fluctuations of up to 15 % being present in the 5% most central collisions. In parallel, no evidence of significant p T -dependent fluctuations of V 3 or V 4 is found. Additionally, evidence of flow angle and magnitude fluctuations is observed with more than 5 σ significance in central collisions. These observations in Pb–Pb collisions indicate where the classical picture of hydrodynamic modeling with a common symmetry plane breaks down. This has implications for hard probes at high p T , which might be biased by p T -dependent flow angle fluctuations of at least 23% in central collisions. Given the presented results, existing theoretical models should be reexamined to improve our understanding of initial conditions, quark–gluon plasma properties, and the dynamic evolution of the created system. ©2024 CERN, for the ALICE Collaboration2024CERN
