Abstract We present a new suite of numerical simulations of the star-forming interstellar medium (ISM) in galactic disks using the TIGRESS-NCR framework. Distinctive aspects of our simulation suite are (1) sophisticated and comprehensive numerical treatments of essential physical processes including magnetohydrodynamics, self-gravity, and galactic differential rotation, as well as photochemistry, cooling, and heating coupled with direct ray-tracing UV radiation transfer and resolved supernova feedback and (2) wide parameter coverage including the variation in metallicity over , gas surface density Σgas∼ 5–150M⊙pc−2, and stellar surface density Σstar∼ 1–50M⊙pc−2. The range of emergent star formation rate surface density is ΣSFR∼ 10−4–0.5M⊙kpc−2yr−1, and ISM total midplane pressure isPtot/kB= 103–106cm−3K, withPtotequal to the ISM weight . For given Σgasand Σstar, we find . We provide an interpretation based on the pressure-regulated feedback-modulated (PRFM) star formation theory. The total midplane pressure consists of thermal, turbulent, and magnetic stresses. We characterize feedback modulation in terms of the yield ϒ, defined as the ratio of each stress to ΣSFR. The thermal feedback yield varies sensitively with both weight and metallicity as , while the combined turbulent and magnetic feedback yield shows weaker dependence . The reduction in ΣSFRat low metallicity is due mainly to enhanced thermal feedback yield, resulting from reduced attenuation of UV radiation. With the metallicity-dependent calibrations we provide, PRFM theory can be used for a new subgrid star formation prescription in cosmological simulations where the ISM is unresolved.

The Reservoir of the Per-emb-2 Streamer
Abstract Streamers bring gas from outer regions to protostellar systems and could change the chemical composition around protostars and protoplanetary disks. We have carried out mapping observations of carbon-chain species (HC3N, HC5N, CCH, and CCS) in the 3 mm and 7 mm bands toward the streamer flowing to the Class 0 young stellar object (YSO) Per-emb-2 with the Nobeyama 45 m radio telescope. A region with a diameter of ∼0.04 pc is located to the north at a distance of ∼20,500 au from the YSO. The streamer connects to this northern region, which is its origin. The reservoir has high density and low temperature ( cm−3,Tkin= 10 K), which are similar to those of early-stage starless cores. By comparison of the observed abundance ratios of CCS/HC3N to the chemical simulations, the reservoir and streamer are found to be chemically young. The total mass available for the streamer is derived to be 24–34M⊙. It has been estimated that, if all of the gas in the reservoir were to accrete onto the Per-emb-2 protostellar system, the lifetime of the streamer would be (1.1–3.2) × 105yr, suggesting that the mass accretion via the streamer would continue until the end of the Class I stage.

Abstract We present thez≈ 6 type-1 quasar luminosity function (QLF), based on the Pan-STARRS1 (PS1) quasar survey. The PS1 sample includes 125 quasars atz≈ 5.7–6.2, with −28 ≲M1450≲ −25. With the addition of 48 fainter quasars from the SHELLQs survey, we evaluate thez≈ 6 QLF over −28 ≲M1450≲ −22. Adopting a double power law with an exponential evolution of the quasar density (Φ(z) ∝ 10k(z−6);k= −0.7), we use a maximum likelihood method to model our data. We find a break magnitude of , a faint-end slope of , and a steep bright-end slope of . Based on our new QLF model, we determine the quasar comoving spatial density atz≈ 6 to be . In comparison with the literature, we find the quasar density to evolve with a constant value ofk≈ −0.7, fromz≈ 7 toz≈ 4. Additionally, we derive an ionizing emissivity of , based on the QLF measurement. Given standard assumptions, and the recent measurement of the mean free path by Becker et al. atz≈ 6, we calculate an Hiphotoionizing rate of ΓH I(z= 6) ≈ 6 × 10−16s−1, strongly disfavoring a dominant role of quasars in hydrogen reionization.more » « less

Abstract Using the Systematically Measuring Ultra-Diffuse Galaxies and Sloan Digital Sky Survey catalogs and our own reprocessing of the Legacy Survey imaging, we investigate the properties of nuclear star clusters (NSCs) in galaxies having central surface brightnesses as low as 27 mag arcsec−2. We identify 273 (123 with known redshift) and 32 NSC-bearing galaxies in the two samples, respectively, where we require candidate NSCs to have a separation of less than 0.10refrom the galaxy center. We find that galaxies with low central surface brightness (μ0,g> 24 mag arcsec−2) are more likely to contain an NSC if they (1) have a higher stellar mass, (2) have a higher stellar-to-total mass ratio, (3) have a brighter central surface brightness, (4) have a larger axis ratio, or (5) lie in a denser environment. Because of the correlations among these various quantities, it is likely that only one or two are true physical drivers. We also find scaling relations for the NSC mass with stellar mass (MNSC/ ) and halo mass (MNSC/ ), although it is the scaling with halo mass that is consistent with a direct proportionality. In galaxies with an NSC,MNSC≈ 10−4Mh,gal. This proportionality echoes the finding of a direct proportionality between the mass (or number) of globular clusters (GCs) in galaxies and the galaxy’s total mass. These findings favor a related origin for GCs and NSCs.more » « less

Abstract We study the luminosity function (LF) and clustering properties of 888 Hαemitters (HAEs) at 3.75 < z < 6 in the GOODS-N field. The sample, built from JWST CONGRESS and FRESCO NIRCam grism surveys using a novel redshift assignment algorithm, spans ∼62 arcmin2and reachesLHα ∼ 1041.2erg s−1. We identify two prominent filamentary protoclusters atz ≈ 4.41 andz ≈ 5.19, hosting 98 and 144 HAEs, respectively. The observed HαLFs show similar shallow faint-end slopes for both protocluster and field galaxies at 3.75 < z < 5, and for the protocluster at 5 < z < 6 (α ≈ −1.2 to −1.3). In contrast, the field LF at 5 < z < 6 has a much steeper slope ( ), suggesting that protocluster galaxies atz > 5 are more evolved, resembling the populations at 3.75 < z < 5. The observed star formation rate density from Hαintegrated down to 0.45M⊙yr−1, is at 3.75 < z < 5 and at 5 < z < 6, with protoclusters contributing about 25% and 55%, respectively. This implies a large fraction of star formation atz> 4 occurs in protoclusters. For the first time, we conduct the star formation-rate-limited three-dimensional clustering analysis atz > 4. We find that the filamentary geometry of protoclusters flattens the power-law shape of the HAE autocorrelation functions, with slopes much shallower than the typically assumed value. The autocorrelation function of field HAEs has a correlation length of atz ≈ 4−5 and atz ≈ 5−6. Comparing the observed correlation functions with the UniverseMachinesimulation, we infer the dark matter (sub-)halo masses of HAEs to be atz ≈ 4−6, with a scatter of 0.4 dex.more » « less

Abstract We present the first results from the Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array Perseus Polarization Survey, focusing on the magnetic field in the SVS 13A circumbinary disk. The data set includes full Stokes dust continuum observations at and 870μm, as well as molecular line emission from C17O(J = 3 → 2) at , C18O(J = 2 → 1) at , and DCN(J = 3 → 2) at angular resolution. Our observations resolve both a previously identified dust spiral and an infalling streamer, capturing their spatial and kinematic structures. The streamer is traced from scales >300 au down to the circumbinary disk. Using alignment measure (AM) maps and histograms that compare the orientations of the plane-of-sky magnetic field with local intensity and velocity gradients, we find that the AM distribution peaks at a value of 1. This AM peak strongly suggests alignment between the field and the dust total intensity emission, as well as between the field and the gas velocity, which in turn suggests grain alignment by magnetic fields. From our data, we derive a magnetic field strength,Bpos ∼ 1.1 ± 0.6 mG, and a kinetic-to-magnetic energy ratio of 0.5 ± 0.4, suggesting magnetic dominance. We also produced a map of the Alfvénic Mach number, finding along the streamer, consistent with sub-Alfvénic infalling motions. Therefore, the field is likely facilitating the inflow of material from the envelope onto the disk by constraining movement across the field lines. This represents the first detection of a magnetically sub-Alfvénic infalling streamer in a protostellar system.more » « less
