Title: The first occurrence of Cainochoerus (Mammalia, Artiodactyla, Suidae) from the late Miocene Lemudong’o Formation, Kenya. Journal of Vertebrate Paleontology.
Cainochoerus is an extinct suid (Mammalia, Artiodactyla) taxon of very small size, found in multiple late Neogene sites in southern and eastern Africa. Despite its wide geographic distribution and temporal range (ca. 10–4.4 Ma), it remains a rare taxon in eastern Africa. Here we report new dentognathic material representing the first reported occurrence of Cainochoerus from the Late Miocene (6 Ma) Lemudong’o Formation, Kenya. This includes the first known deciduous upper premolar attributed to this taxon in eastern Africa. The dental metrics are generally consistent with those attributed to Cainochoerus africanus from Langebaanweg, South Africa. The maxillary molars are closely similar in morphology to those from Lothagam, Kenya, with slight differences in the upper second molar. Because Cainochoerus africanus is the only known Late Miocene small suid in Africa, we attribute these fossils to Cainochoerus cf. africanus. This discovery adds another mammalian species to the faunal community of the Lemudong’o Formation and slightly expands the geographic range of Cainochoerus to the southern Kenyan Rift.  more » « less

    The fossil record of macroscelidean mammals is notoriously patchy, with a significant spatial and temporal gap separating faunas from the early Oligocene localities of northern Africa and the early Miocene localities of eastern and southern Africa. Here we describe fossil macroscelideans representing Myohyracinae and Rhynchocyoninae recovered from a rift-fill sequence of richly fossiliferous sandstones in the late Oligocene Nsungwe Formation in the Rukwa Rift Basin of southwestern Tanzania. Radiometrically dated to 25.2 Ma, a new Palaeogene myohyracine taxon (Rukwasengi butleri) is represented by a partial maxilla (RRBP 05409) preserving a lightly worn M2-M3. The M2 exhibits a less hypsodont and mesiodistally elongate morphology than the early Miocene Myohyrax oswaldi, and the three-rooted M3 exhibits a tiny mesially positioned fossette. A new rhynchocyonine (Oligorhynchocyon songwensis) is represented by specimens more brachyodont than the early Miocene Miorhynchocyon. Taken together these finds document a rare window into macroscelidean evolutionary history with diversification of the group near the Palaeogene-Neogene Transition (PNT). Continued exploration offers a refined perspective on mid-Cenozoic faunal and ecosystem dynamics on continental Africa, expanding opportunities for recognising trends in palaeobiological diversity across habitat types and through time.

  2. The highest species richness and ecological diversity of extant snakes are in the tropics, primarily in South Asia and Central and South America. Tropical Africa has relatively lower richness and less diversity, but the evolution of tropical herpetofaunas, and the factors governing diversification through time at continental scales are poorly understood due to an understudied fossil record. The ecologies and geographic distributions of aniliid and uropeltoid snakes are examples. Modern species constitute either a grade or clade of fossorial, primarily wet forest taxa from South America and South Asia. Their distributions have historically been interpreted as Gondwanan vicariance following the isolation of Africa in the Early Cretaceous, but a definitive fossil record for these snakes is depauperate. Field research in the early Miocene (approx. 19 Mya) Tinderet sequence of western Kenya has produced precloacal vertebrae of an aniliid snake from multiple localities. Specimens possess vertebral apomorphies shared with extant South American Anilius scytale, including the morphology of the neural spine and prezygapophyseal angle. Combined with additional fossils from the Eocene of North Africa and Middle Miocene of Kenya, the Tinderet records demonstrate an unambiguous past record of an extant neotropical snake lineage in Africa and falsify previous vicariance hypotheses. Recent stable isotopic and palynological studies of Neogene eastern African fossil localities have indicated heterogenous environments, including C4 grasses and wood- to scrubland, associated with vertebrate faunas. Comparing climate parameters of habitats for extant Anilius and uropeltoid snakes as ecological analogues to the Tinderet snake with modern ecosystems equivalent to those reconstructed for the eastern African early Miocene demonstrates only limited overlap in precipitation and temperature values. This discord indicates either greater environmental heterogeneity than reconstructed for the early Miocene of eastern Africa, or a greater range of habitat variability in aniliid snakes than observed in extant Anilius.

  3. The highest species richness and ecological diversity of extant squamates are in the tropics. Both their taxic richness and functional traits are predictably correlated to environmental factors, and the utility of these measures in the squamate fossil record is an emergent tool for paleoenvironmental reconstruction. Ongoing field research in the early Miocene (approx. 20–19 Mya) Tinderet sequence of western Kenya has produced a diverse record of squamates which provides environmental data for hominoid-bearing localities. The record consists of chamaeleonid, agamid, varanid, and amphisbaenid lizards as well as snake lineages including pythonids, colubroids, elapoids, and a newly discovered taxon sharing unique vertebral apomorphies with extant tropical South American Anilius scytale. Combined with additional fossils from the Eocene of North Africa, the new Tinderet taxon demonstrates an unambiguous past record of an extant neotropical snake lineage in Africa and falsifies previous vicariance hypotheses to explain the biogeographic histories of basal divisions within snakes. Recent stable isotopic and phytolith studies of Early to Middle Miocene eastern African fossil localities have indicated heterogenous environments, including C4 grasses and wood- to scrubland, associated with vertebrate faunas. The composition of squamate faunas is generally consistent with these reconstructions, with the new taxon providing precise evidence for precipitation. Comparing climate parameters of habitats for Anilius and other extant ecological analogues equivalent to those reconstructed for the eastern African Early Miocene indicates annual precipitation between 1500–2500 mm/year, consistent with wet tropical seasonal forests and rain forests.

The fossil record of temnospondyl amphibians in the immediate wake of the Permo-Triassic mass extinction captures extensive taxic and ecological diversity, with most records known from high paleolatitudinal settings. In southern Pangea, the most substantial records come from South Africa and Australia, with a total of over 20 taxa presently recognized. Temnospondyls have also been known from correlated horizons in the lower Fremouw Formation of Antarctica since the late 1960s, but these records are mostly fragmentary, thereby limiting taxonomic resolution to the family level and subsequent biostratigraphic correlations and comparisons between high-latitude basins. Here we report substantial new material of the amphibamiform Micropholis stowi, a relic dissorophoid previously known only from the Katberg Formation (Lystrosaurus declivis Assemblage Zone) of South Africa, from the lower Fremouw Formation. The exceptional preservation of the recently recovered material permits not only confident taxonomic referral but also tentative association of several individuals to the broad-headed morph of the taxon. The recognition of M. stowi in Antarctica represents only the fourth geographic occurrence of a dissorophoid from southern Pangea and supports the hypothesis that high-latitude environments served as refugia for temnospondyls during the mass extinction. In the case of M. stowi, such refugia permitted the persistence of a predominantly Permo-Carboniferous clade, and the Antarctic records discussed here further hint at a poorly sampled cryptic distribution, both of amphibamiforms in southern Pangea and of small-bodied temnospondyls in early Mesozoic deposits.
