  1. Kagome strip phases are potential quantum materials due to their complex magnetic interactions that can be traced to their hybrid one-dimensional (1D) and two-dimensional (2D) structural motifs. Using a high-temperature hydrothermal method, the designed synthesis and crystal growth of a broad general class of Kagome strip materials with the formula A2M3(XO4)2(OH)2, where M is a range of divalent transition metal ions with differing spin values, are reported herein. An attempt to replace hydroxide with fluoride led to Na2M3(PO4)2F2 in a new structure type with 1D chains of half-delta transition metal arrangements. In both cases, the crystals were grown large enough to align in an external magnetic field, enabling future studies of their anisotropic magnetic properties. The structures are compared to one another with analysis of the importance of hydrogen bonding in the structure formation to enable future design of magnetically frustrated crystals. Not Available

  2. Thermoelectric materials can convert heat into electricity. They are used to generate electricity when other power sources are not available or to increase energy efficiency by recycling waste heat. The Yb 21 Mn 4 Sb 18 phase was previously shown to have good thermoelectric performance due to its large Seebeck coefficient (∼290 μV K −1 ) and low thermal conductivity (0.4 W m −1 K −1 ). These characteristics stem respectively from the unique [Mn 4 Sb 10 ] 22− subunit and the large unit cell/site disorder inherent in this phase. The solid solutions, Yb 21 Mn 4− x Cd x Sb 18 ( x = 0, 0.5, 1.0, 1.5) and Yb 21− y Ca y Mn 4 Sb 18 ( y = 3, 6, 9, 10.5) have been prepared, their structures characterized and thermoelectric properties from room temperature to 800 K measured. A detailed look into the structural disorder for the Cd and Ca solid solutions was performed using synchrotron powder X-ray diffraction and pair distribution function methods and shows that these are highly disordered structures. The substitution of Cd gives rise to more metallic behavior whereas Ca substitution results in high resistivity. As both Cd and Ca are isoelectronic substitutions, the changes in properties are attributed to changes in the electronic structure. Both solid solutions show that the thermal conductivities remain extremely low (∼0.4 W m −1 K −1 ) and that the Seebeck coefficients remain high (>200 μV K −1 ). The temperature dependence of the carrier mobility with increased Ca substitution, changing from approximately T −1 to T −0.5 , suggests that another scattering mechanism is being introduced. As the bonding changes from polar covalent with Yb to ionic for Ca, polar optical phonon scattering becomes the dominant mechanism. Experimental studies of the Cd solid solutions result in a max zT of ∼1 at 800 K and, more importantly for application purposes, a ZT avg ∼ 0.6 from 300 K to 800 K.

  3. ABSTRACT Ternary nitride alloys based on wurtzite AlN are a promising platform to realize functional materials, particularly ferroelectrics and optical emitters, that can smoothly integrate with conventional microelectronics. Here, a strategic design is presented to enable multifunctional materials by substituting multiple elements into AlN to create quaternary nitride alloys. By combining computational predictions and combinatorial thin film synthesis, the phase diagram of these quaternary Al–Sc–Gd–N alloys (or pseudo‐ternary heterostructural AlN–ScN–GdN alloys) is successfully predicted as a function of effective temperature, and we experimentally grow thin films for the first time. It is revealed that crystallizes in a wurtzite‐derived structure for , consistent with the calculated phase diagram. The computational investigation explores whether co‐substitution induces cooperative effects on these alloys' piezoelectric and ferroelectric properties, finding that it is beneficial for reducing the polarization switching barrier. We calculate that thin films should display ferroelectric switching. This is supported by our experimental measurements of a high optical bandgap, enhanced piezoelectric coefficient, and a change in the calculated polarization switching mechanism, and we achieve preliminary ferroelectric switching that experimentally realizes the prediction. Overall, our work sets the foundation toward quaternary wurtzite‐nitride‐based multifunctional materials, including piezoelectrics, ferroelectrics, and possibly even multiferroics.
