  1. Abstract Quantum Chromodynamics predicts a phase transition from hadronic matter to quark–gluon plasma (QGP) at high temperatures and energy densities, where quarks and gluons (partons) are no longer confined within hadrons. The QGP forms in ultrarelativistic heavy-ion collisions. Anisotropic flow coefficients, quantifying the azimuthal expansion of produced matter, probe QGP properties. Flow measurements in high-energy heavy-ion collisions show a distinctive grouping of anisotropic flow for baryons and mesons at intermediate transverse momentum – a feature associated with flow imparted at the quark level, confirming QGP existence. The observation of QGP-like features in proton–proton and proton–ion collisions has sparked debate about QGP formation in smaller systems. For the first time, we demonstrate the distinctive grouping of anisotropic flow for baryons and mesons in high-multiplicity proton–lead and proton–proton collisions at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC). These results are described by a model including hydrodynamic flow followed by hadron formation via quark coalescence, consistent with the formation of partonic flowing systems in these collisions.

  2. Abstract We calculate the S -factor for proton–proton fusion using chiral effective field theory interactions and currents. By performing order-by-order calculations with a variety of chiral interactions that are regularized and calibrated in different ways, we assess the uncertainty in the S -factor from the truncation of the effective field theory expansion and from the sensitivity of the S -factor to the short-distance axial current determined from three- and four-nucleon observables. We find that S (0) = (4.100 ± 0.024(syst) ± 0.013(stat) ± 0.008( g A )) × 10 −23 MeV fm 2 , where the three uncertainties arise, respectively, from the truncation of the effective field theory expansion, use of the two-nucleon axial current fit to few-nucleon observables and variation of the axial coupling constant within the recommended range. The increased value of S (0) compared to previous calculations is mainly driven by an increase in the recommended value for the axial coupling constant and is in agreement with a recent analysis based on pionless effective field theory.

The effect of catalyst addition on H2 evolution from composite electrodes of La0.7Sr0.3TiO3 (LST) and BaZr0.1Ce0.7Y0.1Yb0.1O3−δ (BZCYYb) was studied. Starting with symmetric cells (LST∣∣BZCYYb∣∣LST), Pt was added to one or both electrodes, after which i–V polarization measurements were performed in humidified H2 at 723 and 773 K. The base cells showed very high impedances but these decreased dramatically upon addition of Pt to both electrodes. When Pt was added to only one electrode, the cells performed as diodes, showing that Pt was necessary for H2 dissociation but not for H recombination. The effects of adding Ru, W, Re and Fe were also studied. DFT calculations helped confirm that H recombination on BaZrO3 is expected to be barrierless. The implications of these results for potential application to electrochemical synthesis of ammonia are discussed.
