Title: Geometric building blocks of effective field theory amplitudes
Abstract On-shell amplitudes are invariant under field redefinitions. Nonderivative field redefinitions have a natural interpretation as coordinate transformations on the target manifold. General field redefinitions, which may involve derivatives, can be viewed as coordinate transformations on the field configuration manifold. We present a unified perspective for the geometry of both the target manifold and the field configuration manifold for scalar effective field theories. In both cases, we identify vertices that can be used to build the tree-level amplitudes, with the property that they transform covariantly in the vacuum and on-shell limits. We identify a choice of metric on the field configuration manifold, for which amplitude expressions on the target manifold can be easily reproduced from their counterparts on the field configuration manifold. This clarifies the relation between the well-established framework of field space geometry and recent proposals for functional geometry.  more » « less

  1. We elaborate on a recently proposed geometric framework for scalar effective field theories. Starting from the action, a metric can be identified that enables the construction of geometric quantities on the associated functional manifold. These objects transform covariantly under general field redefinitions that relate different operator bases, including those involving derivatives. We present a novel geometric formula for the amplitudes of the theory, where the vertices in Feynman diagrams are replaced by their geometrized counterparts. This makes the on-shell covariance of amplitudes manifest, providing the link between functional geometry and effective field theories. Published by the American Physical Society2025

  2. Abstract We derive universal formulae for integrating out heavy degrees of freedom in scalar field theories up to one-loop level in terms of covariant quantities associated with the geometry of the field manifold. The universal matching results can be readily applied to phenomenologically interesting extensions of the Standard Model, as we demonstrate using a singlet scalar example. We also discuss the role of field redefinitions in effective field theory matching and simplifications resulting from going to a field basis where interactions are encoded in a nontrivial metric on the field manifold.

  3. Abstract We study Randall-Sundrum two brane setups with mismatched brane tensions. For the vacuum solutions, boundary conditions demand that the induced metric on each of the branes is either de Sitter, Anti-de Sitter, or Minkowski. For incompatible boundary conditions, the bulk metric is necessarily time-dependent. This introduces a new class of time-dependent solutions with the potential to address cosmological issues and provide alternatives to conventional inflationary (or contracting) scenarios. We take a first step in this paper toward such solutions. One important finding is that the resulting solutions can be very succinctly described in terms of an effective action involving only the induced metric on either one of the branes and the radion field. But the full geometry cannot necessarily be simply described with a single coordinate patch. We concentrate here on the time- dependent solutions but argue that supplemented with a brane stabilization mechanism one can potentially construct interesting cosmological models this way. This is true both with and without a brane stabilization mechanism.

  4. Abstract We study the collinear factorization of off-shell scattering amplitudes in maximally supersymmetric Yang-Mills (sYM) theory. These are constructed starting from six-dimensional$$ \mathcal{N} $$ N = (1) sYM, taking advantage of an available unconstrained spinor-helicity formalism combined with a unitarity-cut sewing procedure. After generalized dimensional reduction, their collinear behavior is dissected with assistance from the Method of Regions. We then construct off-shell splitting amplitudes directly using the same techniques, establishing equivalence to the amplitude analysis. The calculations are performed at one-loop order.

  5. Abstract The formulation of the S-matrix as a path integral with specified asymptotic boundary conditions naturally leads to the realization of a Carrollian partition function defined on the boundary of Minkowski space. This partition function, specified at past and future null infinity in the case of massless particles, generates Carrollian correlation functions that encode the S-matrix. We explore this connection, including the realization of symmetries, soft theorems arising from large gauge transformations, and the correspondence with standard momentum space amplitudes. This framework is also well-suited for embedding the Minkowski space S-matrix into the AdS/CFT duality in the large radius limit. In particular, we identify the AdS and Carrollian partition functions through a simple map between their respective asymptotic data, establishing a direct correspondence between the actions of symmetries on both sides. Our approach thus provides a coherent framework that ties together various topics extensively studied in recent and past literature.
