Abstract Spin-orbit coupling in noncentrosymmetric crystals leads to spin-momentum locking – a directional relationship between an electron’s spin angular momentum and its linear momentum. Isotropic orthogonal Rashba spin-momentum locking has been studied for decades, while its counterpart, isotropic parallel Weyl spin-momentum locking has remained elusive in experiments. Theory predicts that Weyl spin-momentum locking can only be realized in structurally chiral cubic crystals in the vicinity of Kramers-Weyl or multifold fermions. Here, we use spin- and angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy to evidence Weyl spin-momentum locking of multifold fermions in the chiral topological semimetal PtGa. We find that the electron spin of the Fermi arc surface states is orthogonal to their Fermi surface contour for momenta close to the projection of the bulk multifold fermion at the Γ point, which is consistent with Weyl spin-momentum locking of the latter. The direct measurement of the bulk spin texture of the multifold fermion at the R point also displays Weyl spin-momentum locking. The discovery of Weyl spin-momentum locking may lead to energy-efficient memory devices and Josephson diodes based on chiral topological semimetals.

Data for "Gate-tunable spin texture in a Dirac semimetal-ferromagnetic semiconductor heterostructure"
Abstract: We use a concerted theory-experiment effort to investigate the formation of chiral real space spin texture when the archetypal Dirac semimetal Cd3As2 is interfaced with In1−xMnxAs, a ferromagnetic semiconductor with perpendicular magnetic anisotropy. We combine DFT calculations, the linear response theory for spin susceptibility and micromagnetic simulations to explore the possibility of chiral spin texture in this heterostructure. While a non-zero off-diagonal spin susceptibility in the Cd3As2 layer due to inversion symmetry breaking suggests the presence of Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction (DMI) between local moments in the InMnAs layers, the amplitude may not be strong enough to give a “full” skyrmion texture. Instead, the interace states at the junction may promote a “partial” skyrmion texture. Using electrical magnetoresistance measurements at low temperature, we observe an emergent excess contribution to the transverse magneto-resistance whose behavior is consistent with a topological Hall effect arising from the formation of an interfacial chiral spin texture. This excess Hall voltage varies with gate voltage, indicating a promising electrostatically-tunable platform for understanding the interplay between the helical momentum space states of a Dirac semimetal and chiral real-space spin textures in a ferromagnet.

null (Ed.)Abstract Spin-valley locking in monolayer transition metal dichalcogenides has attracted enormous interest, since it offers potential for valleytronic and optoelectronic applications. Such an exotic electronic state has sparsely been seen in bulk materials. Here, we report spin-valley locking in a Dirac semimetal BaMnSb 2 . This is revealed by comprehensive studies using first principles calculations, tight-binding and effective model analyses, angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy measurements. Moreover, this material also exhibits a stacked quantum Hall effect (QHE). The spin-valley degeneracy extracted from the QHE is close to 2. This result, together with the Landau level spin splitting, further confirms the spin-valley locking picture. In the extreme quantum limit, we also observed a plateau in the z -axis resistance, suggestive of a two-dimensional chiral surface state present in the quantum Hall state. These findings establish BaMnSb 2 as a rare platform for exploring coupled spin and valley physics in bulk single crystals and accessing 3D interacting topological states.more » « less

Abstract Ferrimagnets, which have both ferromagnetic and antiferromagnetic coupling, are attracting increased attention in the realm of spintronic devices due to advantages such as ultrafast dynamics and a suppressed skyrmion Hall effect. Thus, understanding the behavior of nontrivial spin textures in ferrimagnets is crucial; however, comprehensive reports on this topic remain limited. Here, the magnetic spin textures of ferrimagnetic Mn2 −xZnxSb (x = 0.85) is explored as a function of temperature and applied magnetic field. The spin textures can be tuned to a variety of states, including stripes, skyrmion bags, and a skyrmion lattice. Chiral Néel‐type magnetic structures are visualized using Lorentz transmission electron microscopy. Mn(I) ions are slightly shifted toward the Sb sites, which may be due to a strong electrostatic interaction between Mn and Sb ions. This local structural distortion breaks the inversion symmetry and introduces an effective Dzyaloshinkii–Moriya interaction. This work thus provides a pathway to use doping and heterogeneity in a ferrimagnet to control and generate chiral nontrivial spin textures.more » « less

The spin structure and transport behavior of B20-ordered CoSi nanomagnets are investigated experimentally and by theoretical calculations. B20 materials are of interest in spin electronics because their noncentrosymmetric crystal structure favors noncoplanar spin structures that yield a contribution to the Hall effect. However, stoichiometric bulk CoSi is nonmagnetic, and combining magnetic order at and above room temperature with small feature sizes has remained a general challenge. Our CoSi nanoclusters have an average size of 11.6 nm and a magnetic ordering temperature of 330 K. First-principle calculations and x-ray circular dichroism experiments show that the magnetic moment is predominantly confined to the shells of the clusters. The CoSi nanocluster ensemble exhibits a topological Hall effect, which is explained by an analytical model and by micromagnetic simulations on the basis of competing Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya and intra- and intercluster exchange interactions. The topological Hall effect is caused by formation of chiral spin textures in the shells of the clusters, which exhibit fractional skyrmion number and are therefore termed as paraskyrmions (closely related to skyrmion spin structures). This research shows how nanostructuring of a chiral atomic structure can create a spin-textured material with a topological Hall effect and a magnetic ordering temperature above room temperature.more » « less

Understanding the interaction of real- and reciprocal space topology in skyrmion crystals is an open problem. We approach it from the viewpoint ofC^\ast -algebras and calculate all admissible Chern numbers of a strongly coupled tight-binding skyrmion system on a triangular lattice as a function of Fermi energy and texture parameters. Our analysis reveals the topological complexity of electronic states coupled to spin textures, and the failure of the adiabatic picture to account for it in terms of emergent electromagnetism. On the contrary, we explain the discontinuous jumps in the real-space winding number in terms of collective evolution in real-, reciprocal, and mixed space Chern numbers. Our work sets the stage for further research on topological dynamics in complex dynamic spin textures coupled to external fields.more » « less
