Abstract We report a search for the lepton-flavor-violating decaysτ±→ℓ±α(ℓ=e,μ), whereαis an undetected spin-0 particle, such as an axion-like particle using 736 × 106tau lepton pairs collected by the Belle detector at the KEKB asymmetric-energye+e−collider. We find no evidence of signal and obtain the most stringent upper limits on the branching fractions at 95% confidence level:$$\mathcal{B}$$(τ±→ e±α) < (0.4–6.4)×10−4and$$\mathcal{B}$$(τ±→ μ±α) < (0.2–3.5)×10−4at 95% confidence level for anαmass in the range 0.0≤ mα≤1.6 GeV/c2.

Search for an axion-like particle in B → K(*)a(→ γγ) decays at Belle
Abstract We report a search for an axion-like particleainB→K(*)adecays using data collected with the Belle detector at the KEKB asymmetric-energy electron-positron collider. The search is based on a 711 fb−1data sample collected at the Υ(4S) resonance energy, corresponding to a sample of 772 × 106Υ(4S) events. In this study, we search for the decay of the axion-like particle into a pair of photons,a→γγ. We scan the two-photon invariant mass in the range 0.16 GeV–4.50 GeV for theKmodes and 0.16 GeV–4.20 GeV for theK*modes. No significant signal is observed in any of the modes, and 90% confidence level upper limits are established on the coupling to theWboson,gaW, as a function ofamass. The limits range from 3×10−6GeV−1to 3×10−5GeV−1, improving the current constraints ongaWby a factor of two over the most stringent previous experimental results.

Axion-like particles (ALPs) arise from well-motivated extensions to the Standard Model and could account for dark matter. ALP dark matter would manifest as a field oscillating at an (as of yet) unknown frequency. The frequency depends linearly on the ALP mass and plausibly ranges from 10−22to 10 eV/c2. This motivates broadband search approaches. We report on a direct search for ALP dark matter with an interferometer composed of two atomic K-Rb-3He comagnetometers, one situated in Mainz, Germany, and the other in Kraków, Poland. We leverage the anticipated spatio-temporal coherence properties of the ALP field and probe all ALP-gradient-spin interactions covering a mass range of nine orders of magnitude. No significant evidence of an ALP signal is found. We thus place new upper limits on the ALP-neutron, ALP-proton and ALP-electron couplings reaching belowgaNN < 10−9 GeV−1,gaPP < 10−7 GeV−1andgaee < 10−6 GeV−1, respectively. These limits improve upon previous laboratory constraints for neutron and proton couplings by up to three orders of magnitude.more » « less

Abstract The first FASER search for a light, long-lived particle decaying into a pair of photons is reported. The search uses LHC proton-proton collision data at$$ \sqrt{s} $$ = 13.6 TeV collected in 2022 and 2023, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 57.7 fb−1. A model with axion-like particles (ALPs) dominantly coupled to weak gauge bosons is the primary target. Signal events are characterised by high-energy deposits in the electromagnetic calorimeter and no signal in the veto scintillators. One event is observed, compared to a background expectation of 0.44 ± 0.39 events, which is entirely dominated by neutrino interactions. World-leading constraints on ALPs are obtained for masses up to 300 MeV and couplings to the Standard Model W gauge boson,gaWW, around 10−4GeV−1, testing a previously unexplored region of parameter space. Other new particle models that lead to the same experimental signature, including ALPs coupled to gluons or photons, U(1)Bgauge bosons, up-philic scalars, and a Type-I two-Higgs doublet model, are also considered for interpretation, and new constraints on previously viable parameter space are presented in this paper.more » « less

Abstract We study the processesχbJωandχbJ(π+π−π0)non−ω(J= 0, 1, 2) at center-of-mass energies$$\sqrt{s}$$from 10.73 to 11.02 GeV using a 142.5 fb−1data sample collected with the Belle detector at the KEKB asymmetric-energye+e−collider; and at$$\sqrt{s}\sim 10.75$$GeV using a 19.8 fb−1sample collected with Belle II at SuperKEKB. We find that the Υ(10753) state decays intoχbJωbut not intoχbJ(π+π−π0)non−ω, while the Υ(10860) state, in contrast, decays intoχbJ(π+π−π0)non−ωbut not intoχbJω. The mass and width of the Υ(10753) state are measured to be (10756.1 ± 3.4(stat.) ± 2.7(syst.)) MeV/c2and (32.2 ± 11.3(stat.) ± 14.9(syst.)) MeV. The products of the partial width toe+e−and branching fractions for Υ(10753)→ χb1ωand Υ(10753)→ χb2ωare (1.57±0.27(stat.)±0.22(syst.)) eV and (1.39±0.41(stat.)±0.33(syst.)) eV.more » « less

Abstract We report a search for the charged-lepton flavor violation in Υ(2S) →ℓ∓τ±(ℓ=e, μ) decays using a 25 fb−1Υ(2S) sample collected by the Belle detector at the KEKBe+e−asymmetric-energy collider. We find no evidence for a signal and set upper limits on the branching fractions ($$ \mathcal{B} $$ ) at 90% confidence level. We obtain the most stringent upper limits:$$ \mathcal{B} $$ (Υ(2S)→ μ∓τ±)<0.23×10−6and$$ \mathcal{B} $$ (Υ(2S)→ e∓τ±)<1.12×10−6.more » « less
