A search is presented for high-mass exclusive diphoton production via photon-photon fusion in proton-proton collisions at in events where both protons survive the interaction. The analysis utilizes data corresponding to an integrated luminosity of collected in 2016–2018 with the central CMS detector and the CMS and TOTEM precision proton spectrometer (PPS). Events that have two photons with high transverse momenta ( ), back-to-back in azimuth, and with a large diphoton invariant mass ( ) are selected. To remove the dominant inclusive diphoton backgrounds, the kinematic properties of the protons detected in PPS are required to match those of the central diphoton system. Only events having opposite-side forward protons detected with a fractional momentum loss between 0.035 and 0.15 (0.18) for the detectors on the negative (positive) side of CMS are considered. One exclusive diphoton candidate is observed for an expected background of 1.1 events. Limits at 95% confidence level are derived for the four-photon anomalous coupling parameters and , using an effective field theory. Additionally, upper limits are placed on the production of axionlike particles with coupling strength to photons that varies from to over the mass range from 500 to 2000 GeV. © 2024 CERN, for the CMS and TOTEMs Collaboration2024CERN

Inclusive Search for Anomalous Single-Photon Production in MicroBooNE
We present an inclusive search for anomalous production of single-photon events from neutrino interactions in the MicroBooNE experiment. The search and its signal definition are motivated by the previous observation of a low-energy excess of electromagnetic shower events from the MiniBooNE experiment. We use the Wire-Cell reconstruction framework to select a sample of inclusive single-photon final-state interactions with a final efficiency and purity of 7.0% and 40.2%, respectively. We leverage simultaneous measurements of sidebands of charged current interactions and neutral current interactions producing mesons to constrain signal and background predictions and reduce uncertainties. We perform a blind analysis using a dataset collected from February 2016 to July 2018, corresponding to an exposure of protons on target from the Booster Neutrino Beam at Fermilab. In the full signal region, we observe agreement between the data and the prediction, with a goodness-of-fit value of 0.11. We then isolate a subsample of these events containing no visible protons, and observe data events above prediction, corresponding to just above local significance, concentrated at shower energies below 600 MeV.

We report dark photon results from HAYSTAC phase II using data from previously reported axion searches. Additionally, we present an analysis of an unpublished dataset covering a region between . This region overlaps with a recently reported dark photon signal at with a kinetic coupling strength of resulting from a reanalysis of previously published data from the TASEH collaboration. Given HAYSTAC’s sensitivity, if such a signal were present, it would have appeared as a large excess above the noise. However, no such signal was observed. We thus exclude couplings at the 90% confidence level over the newly reported region. In addition, using our previously reported axion data, we exclude couplings between at the 90% confidence level.more » « less

We report the first search for the flavor-changing neutral-current decays , where is a hadronic system with strangeness equal to 1, in data collected with the Belle II detector at the SuperKEKB asymmetric-energy collider. The data sample corresponds to an integrated luminosity of collected at the resonance and collected at a center-of-mass energy 60 MeV below resonance for estimation of continuum background. One of the mesons from the decay is fully reconstructed in a hadronic decay mode. The decay is reconstructed with a sum-of-exclusives approach that uses 30 decay modes. This approach provides high sensitivity to the inclusive decay, despite the presence of two undetected neutrinos. The search is performed in three regions of the mass, , chosen to separate contributions from , , and heavier strange final states. We do not observe a significant signal and set upper limits at 90% confidence level on the partial branching fractions for the regions , , and of , , and , respectively. Combining the three mass regions, we obtain the upper limit on the branching fraction, .more » « less

A sample of of data collected by the Belle II experiment is used to measure the partial branching fractions of charmless semileptonic meson decays and determine the magnitude of the Cabibbo-Kobayashi-Maskawa (CKM) matrix element . Events containing a signal electron or muon and a fully reconstructed hadronic decay that constrains the signal kinematics are selected, while the rest of the event defines the hadronic system associated with the signal. To discriminate the signal from the 50-times larger background originating from CKM-favored semileptonic decays, a template fit is performed in both signal and control regions after applying an optimized selection. The partial branching fraction measured for lepton energies greater than 1 GeV in the signal meson rest frame is . From this measurement, using the Gambino, Giordano, Ossola, Uraltsev theoretical framework, is determined, where the uncertainties are experimental and theoretical, respectively. This value is consistent with the world average obtained from previous inclusive measurements. Different theoretical predictions and partial branching fractions measured in other phase-space regions, defined by additional selections on the and leptonic system masses, are also used to determine . This allows for a comparison of the resulting values across theoretical frameworks and phase-space regions.more » « less

We present a search for an eV-scale sterile neutrino using 7.5 years of data from the IceCube DeepCore detector. The analysis uses a sample of 21,914 events with energies between 5 and 150 GeV to search for sterile neutrinos through atmospheric muon neutrino disappearance. Improvements in event selection and treatment of systematic uncertainties provide greater statistical power compared to previous DeepCore sterile neutrino searches. Our results are compatible with the absence of mixing between active and sterile neutrino states, and we place constraints on the mixing matrix elements and at 90% CL under the assumption that . These null results add to the growing tension between anomalous appearance results and constraints from disappearance searches in the sterile neutrino landscape.
