This paper presents a new 48 V-to-1 V hybrid converter. The converter utilizes two interleaved inductors to achieve complete soft-charging of flying capacitors to efficiently support high output currents. This dual inductor hybrid converter (DIHC) features fewer number of switches and more effective switch utilization than a recently reported hybrid Dickson converter, leading to substantially less conduction losses presented by a smaller equivalent output impedance. Experimental results verify the converter's operation principles and advantages in a 300-kHz 20-W prototype achieving 95.02% peak efficiency and 225 W/in3 power density. Its advantages and performance promise a good candidate converter architecture for applications that require large conversion ratios and high output currents, such as data centers and high-performance digital systems.

Planar Transformer Enabled 380V/48V LLC Converter for Data Center Applications Based on SiC Devices
This paper presents a 400 V-to-48 V LLC resonant converter for data center applications, designed for high efficiency and low profile. A planar transformer using PC95 ferrite cores and optimized multi-strand Litz windings minimizes AC resistance and conduction losses while maintaining manufacturability. Analytical modeling and loss evaluation guided optimal strand configurations. A 2.8-kW prototype with full-bridge primary and diode rectification achieved output at 200 V input, with stable zero-voltage switching and regulated 48 V output under multiple load conditions. Results verify design feasibility and provide a basis for future improvements in thermal management and power density.

This article proposes a matrix auto-transformer switched-capacitor dc–dc converter to achieve a high voltage conversion ratio, high efficiency, and high power density for 48-V data-center applications. On the high-voltage side, the proposed converter can fully leverage the benefits of high-performance low voltage stress devices similar to the multilevel modular switched-capacitor converter. Compared with the traditional isolated LLC converter with a matrix transformer, the proposed solution utilized a matrix autotransformer concept with merged primary and secondary side windings, thus leading to reduced transformer winding loss. The resonant inductor could be integrated into the transformer similar to the LLC converter. Because of the matrix autotransformer design, it can achieve a current doubler rectifier on the low voltage side. For less than 8-V low output voltage application, the current doubler rectifier design can fully utilize the best figure-of-merit 25-V device, which is more efficient than the full-bridge rectifier solution using two 25-V devices during the operation. All the devices can achieve zero voltage switching or zero current switching and can be naturally clamped without additional clamping circuits. A 500-W 48-V to 6-V dc–dc converter hardware prototype has been developed with optimized device selection and integrated matrix autotransformer design. Both simulation and experiment results have been provided to validate the features and benefits of the proposed converter. The maximum efficiency of the proposed converter can reach 98.33%.more » « less

This paper presents a dual-inductor hybrid (DIH) converter that is capable of efficient non-isolated DC-DC con- versions with extremely large voltage conversion ratios. The converter topology combines a switched-capacitor network and two interleaved inductors, that supports simple duty-cycle control for output regulation. In order to achieve complete soft charging for all flying capacitors, a method to optimally size the capacitors has been proposed and verified. A detailed analysis on the two inductor currents revealing a new and simple method to modulate them and its impacts on output regulation and efficiency are also provided and demonstrated in experiments. Employing the converter topology and design methods, a DIH converter prototype is implemented and measured for a wide range of operating voltages, providing a 1V-2V output from a 48-V input and a 1V-5V output from a 150V input with output currents up to 20A. The converter achieves 94.3% peak efficiency at 48V- to-2V/7A conversion and 93.7% at 150V-to-5V/18A conversion.more » « less

Type V CRISPR-Cas interference proteins use a single RuvC active site to make RNA-guided breaks in double-stranded DNA substrates, an activity essential for both bacterial immunity and genome editing. The best-studied of these enzymes, Cas12a, initiates DNA cutting by forming a 20-nucleotide R-loop in which the guide RNA displaces one strand of a double-helical DNA substrate, positioning the DNase active site for first-strand cleavage. However, crystal structures and biochemical data have not explained how the second strand is cut to complete the double-strand break. Here, we detect intrinsic instability in DNA flanking the RNA-3′ side of R-loops, which Cas12a can exploit to expose second-strand DNA for cutting. Interestingly, DNA flanking the RNA-5′ side of R-loops is not intrinsically unstable. This asymmetry in R-loop structure may explain the uniformity of guide RNA architecture and the single-active-site cleavage mechanism that are fundamental features of all type V CRISPR-Cas systems.more » « less

null (Ed.)This paper presents a 90.6% 48 V-1 V/150 A two-stage hybrid switched-capacitor point-of-load (PoL) converter with a 24 V intermediate bus. The first stage of the converter is a 2:1 resonant charge pump which converts the 48 V input voltage to 24 V. The second stage of the converter is a 24:1 four-phase series capacitor buck converter which is capable of delivering 150 A with two customized four-phase coupled inductor for vertical power delivery. The two-stage architecture combines the resonant switched-capacitor structure and the series capacitor buck configuration to achieve high efficiency, high power density, and voltage regulation. The effectiveness of the topology is verified by a 48 V-1 V/150 A prototype with a peak efficiency of 90.6% at 60 A and a full load efficiency of 86.2% at 150 A. The power density of the prototype is 283 W/in 3 .more » « less
