Title: Dynamical up-quark mass generation in QCD-like theories
We calculate the dynamically generated up-quark mass in some QCD-like theories with F=3 light flavors, obtained from supersymmetric QCD perturbed via anomaly mediated supersymmetry breaking. We match the low-energy effective theory to the traditional chiral Lagrangian of QCD and determine the coefficients to next-to-leading order in chiral perturbation theory, while also varying the number of colors N . We find that the dynamically generated up-quark mass vanishes in the large N limit and is small for F<N ; however, for F=N there is a sizable O(1) contribution. While our results are reliable only for small supersymmetry breaking, we observe that extrapolating the F=N result to large supersymmetry breaking would lead to a dynamical up-quark mass that is large enough to account for its entire physical mass.  more » « less

  1. Recently, BPP decays ( B={B0,B+,Bs0} , P={π,K} ) were analyzed under the assumption of flavor SU(3) symmetry ( SU(3)F ). Although the individual fits to ΔS=0 or ΔS=1 decays are good, it was found that the combined fit is very poor: there is a 3.6σ disagreement with the SU(3)F limit of the standard model ( SM SU(3)F ). One can remove this discrepancy by adding SU(3)F -breaking effects, but 1000% SU(3)F breaking is required. In this paper, we extend this analysis to include decays in which there is an η and/or η meson in the final state. We now find that the combined fit exhibits a 4.1σ discrepancy with the SM SU(3)F , and 1000% SU(3)F -breaking effects are still required to explain the data. These results are rigorous, group-theoretically—no theoretical assumptions have been made. But when one adds some theoretical input motivated by QCD factorization, the discrepancy with the SM SU(3)F grows to 4.9σ

  2. In this Letter, we perform fits to BPP decays, where B={B0,B+, Bs0 } and the pseudoscalar P={π,K} , under the assumption of flavor SU(3) symmetry [ SU(3)F ]. Although the fits to ΔS=0 or ΔS=1 decays individually are good, the combined fit is very poor: there is a 3.6σ disagreement with the SU(3)F limit of the standard model ( SM SU(3)F ). One can remove this discrepancy by adding SU(3)F -breaking effects, but 1000% SU(3)F breaking is required. The above results are rigorous, group theoretically—no dynamical assumptions have been made. When one adds an assumption motivated by QCD factorization, the discrepancy with the SM SU(3)F grows to 4.4σ . Published by the American Physical Society2024

  3. We present exact results in softly broken supersymmetric SU(NC) chiral gauge theories with charged fermions in one antisymmetric, NF fundamental, and NC+NF4 antifundamental representations. We achieve this by considering the supersymmetric version of these theories and utilizing anomaly mediated supersymmetry breaking at a scale mΛ to generate a vacuum. The connection to nonsupersymmetric theories is then conjectured in the limit m . For odd NC , we determine the massless fermions and unbroken global symmetries in the infrared. For even NC , we find global symmetries are nonanomalous and no massless fermions. In all cases, the symmetry breaking patterns differ from what the tumbling hypothesis would suggest.

  4. A search is performed for charged-lepton flavor violating processes in top quark ( t ) production and decay. The data were collected by the CMS experiment from proton-proton collisions at a center-of-mass energy of 13 TeV and correspond to an integrated luminosity of 138fb1 . The selected events are required to contain one opposite-sign electron-muon pair, a third charged lepton (electron or muon), and at least one jet of which no more than one is associated with a bottom quark. Boosted decision trees are used to distinguish signal from background, exploiting differences in the kinematics of the final states particles. The data are consistent with the standard model expectation. Upper limits at 95% confidence level are placed in the context of effective field theory on the Wilson coefficients, which range between 0.0240.424TeV2 depending on the flavor of the associated light quark and the Lorentz structure of the interaction. These limits are converted to upper limits on branching fractions involving up (charm) quarks, teμu ( teμc ), of 0.032(0.498)×106 , 0.022(0.369)×106 , and 0.012(0.216)×106 for tensorlike, vectorlike, and scalarlike interactions, respectively.

  5. The pion light-cone distribution amplitude (LCDA) is an essential nonperturbative input for a range of high-energy exclusive processes in quantum chromodynamics. Building on our previous work, the continuum limit of the fourth Mellin moment of the pion LCDA is determined in quenched QCD using quark masses which correspond to a pion mass of mπ=550MeV . This calculation finds ξ2=0.202(8)(9) and ξ4=0.039(28)(11) where the first error indicates the combined statistical and systematic uncertainty from the analysis and the second indicates the uncertainty from working with Wilson coefficients computed to next-to-leading order. These results are presented in the MS¯ scheme at a renormalization scale of μ=2GeV
